2009 NFL Draft: 6th/7th Round Open Thread

This is it, final round and a half for the Jaguars.  Not much for them to do other than wait for their 7th round picks.

I'm cooking dinner and starting to compose Monday's draft analysis, so pardon my slow response time.

Miller's measurables are great

I’ll take a 4.5 TE any day. Let’s hope he’s a shadow of Jay Novachek

sorry to hear that

the draft has been great so far. Do you know the picks or are you more concerned with value and drama?

by mattarne on Apr 26, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

1st round..LT Eugene Monroe
2nd round..LT Eben Britton (both steals so far, britton will play RT or RG and wants to punish the teams who skipped him in the 1st)
3rd round…DT Terrance Knighton
3rd round…CB Derek Cox( trade with pats, we lost this 7 and next years 2, but they feel this guy will start)

4th round..WR Mike Thomas (short and very very quick)
5th round…WR Jarret Dillard (60 td’s in 4 years..ncaa record)
6th round..TE Zach Miller (runs a 4.53 40 and is also an option QB)

anything else?

I feel like we were very lucky...

to have a 4.53 TE prospect fall to us in the 6th – I suppose we couldn’t afford to reach with all our other needs.

Zack Miller

Pick Analysis: Miller was a quarterback and transitioned into a tight end. He ran unbelievably fast at his pro day. He’s another developmental project, but guys who can run that fast are worth the pick. He’s big, fast and athletic.

The guy has unbelievable raw talent. He’s big, fast, and powerful. At round 6, I forsee this guy being a steal

Sorgi has kept the role as the backup there. Maybe its just that Manning never gets hurt and Sorgi has never been exposed to real season action. We could decimate the Colts if that little girly mouth Sorgi was under center.

Finally

jaguars.com let it know, that we have a new player in Miller
His position is Tight End-so the jaguars will use him like that.
I wanna know about this interesting player/project

I really think everyone should forget about the QB thing altogether

It’s the same situation as Matt Jones. He’s not a QB so don’t even mention him playing it. Zach Miller is a TE and if he makes the squad it’ll be as a TE.

Finally Vic's take about Miller

looks like Tice likes him a lot. And he describe himself as a poor men’s Tim Tebow:
The Jaguars’ sixth-round pick describes himself as a "poor man’s Tim Tebow." He’s Zach Miller, a 6-4, 235-pound small-college quarterback who’ll be making a position switch to tight end.

"I’m a tight end now," Miller said when asked what position he plays. His college bio from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, a Division II school to which Miller transferred after walking on at Nebraska (the big one), makes no mention of Miller having caught a pass.

Miller threw for 1,508 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 1,061 yards and 18 touchdowns as UNO’s quarterback last season, but he played tight end in only one game, the Cactus Bowl, a Division II all-star game.

"That’s the only time I ever played tight end in my life," Miller said.

Jaguars Assistant Head Coach Mike Tice worked Miller out at UNO’s pro day and Miller said he felt a connection between the two. Apparently the connection was strong enough for the Jaguars to draft Miller and attempt a rare switch from quarterback to tight end.

Quarterback to wide receiver is common. Matt Jones, of course, made that move with the Jaguars following his first-round selection in 2005. Quarterback to tight end? Well, Jim Jensen comes to mind. Tight end was just one of several positions Jensen played with the Dolphins from 1981-92.

Miller was lightly recruited coming out of high school in Nebraska. His junior year was wiped out by a broken collar bone and he didn’t hit a growth spurt until he was a senior. He walked on at Nebraska as a quarterback but transferred to UNO when Bill Callahan was hired to coach the Cornhuskers and it became apparent Miller was not in the new coach’s plans.

The Jaguars are including Miller in their plans. He’ll be a project but he’s a big guy who runs the 40 in the 4.47-4.54 range, his college rushing yardage clearly proves he has run-after-the-catch ability, and he promises that "one thing that’s not going to be lacking from me is effort."

Miller is just another pick in what is clearly a good-guy Jaguars draft; strength of character is a priority.

"I’m the poor man’s Tim Tebow. I’ll take that," Miller said. "I think I can play in the league. The best football players step onto the field every weekend and to step onto the field with them is a great honor."

Jaguars wanna take a guy, just to say, we have him, we not need Tebow next year????

from nfl.com:

Jennings decided to transfer to Liberty for the 2006 season. Because his father was battling diabetes and he didn’t want the burden of caring for him to fall squarely with the rest of his family, he decided to be closer to his home in Virginia. One day, his brother, Butch, opened the door to his home. Standing there soaking wet from sweat was his younger brother. Rashad had run and walked 18 miles from his mother’s home in Forest to his brother’s home in Lynchburg.

Underwood is an unheralded athlete who had to take a back seat to the team’s emphasis for a strong running game earlier in his career. But given an opportunity as a junior, he went on to etch his name into the school record books. The cat-quick moves, long wing-span, outstanding leaping ability and sure hands allowed the talented receiver to become just the second player in school history to gain more than 1,000 yards receiving in a season, joining Tres Moses (1,056 yards in 2004).

His stellar performances on the field forced the opposition to place constant double coverage on him the second part of 2007. That allowed fellow receiver Kenny Britt to match Underwood’s exploits, as he tallied 1,232 yards receiving last season. They became just the 26th tandem in NCAA history and the first in Big East Conference annals to gain more than 1,000 yards receiving in the same season.

At Notre Dame High School, Underwood earned All-County honors as a sophomore wide receiver and was again recognized as an All-County quarterback during his junior campaign. He returned to the receiving unit as a senior, catching 17 passes for more than 400 yards with five touchdowns in the team’s first two games before an injury in the third contest would sideline him for the rest of 2004.

In 2003, Underwood completed 70 of 103 passes for 1,144 yards and 16 touchdowns, as he also rushed for two touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 212 yards with five scores. During his sophomore campaign, he made 35 catches for 606 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Underwood was the starting point guard on the school’s basketball team as a sophomore and junior, leading the team in scoring in 2003-2004. He also competed in hurdles and triple jump for outdoor track team, where he set the state record for sophomores and juniors in the triple jump.

During his first season at Rutgers, Underwood was a jack of all-trades. He saw action at both receiving positions, in addition to lining up as a quarterback to take direct snaps in shotgun formation. He only threw the ball once, resulting in an interception, but gained 63 yards on the ground, as five of 16 carries resulted in first downs. He snatched four passes for 47 yards and fielded two punts for no gain, fumbling one in the Insight Bowl. He led the Big East Conference and ranked 19th in the nation, averaging 27.1 yards on 11 kickoff returns for 298 yards in 2004.

Underwood changed from jersey No. 10 that he wore as a freshman to jersey No. 7 for his 2005 campaign. He took over flanker duties in the team’s fifth game when Shawn Tucker suffered a season-ending ankle injury. He finished fourth on the team with 23 receptions for 290 yards (12.6 avg), leading the Scarlet Knights with four touchdowns. A broken bone in his right foot in the regular-season finale would sideline him for the Insight Bowl.

Eighteen of his catches produced first downs, converting five third-down plays in the process. In addition to his four touchdowns, he had key catches that set up five other touchdown drives and three series that ended with field goals. He also returned one kickoff for 11 yards and recorded three tackles (2 solos), including one for a 2-yard loss.

As a junior, Underwood earned All-American third-team accolades and was a consensus All-Big East Conference choice. He led the team with 65 receptions, the third-best season total in school history, as his 1,100 yards rank second on the Rutgers’ annual record chart. He had seven touchdown grabs, along with 55 first downs, converting 20 third-down catches. Forty-two of his grabs were for 10 yards or longer, including 18 for at least 20 yards. He had key catches to set up 13 other touchdowns for the Scarlet Knights and nine others that led to team field goals. He also registered seven touchdown-resulting blocks.

Underwood entered the 2008 season as one of the premier pass catchers in college football. A member of the AFCA “Good Works” team for his outstanding work in the community, he was also named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. He garnered All-American second-team preseason recognition, in addition to being a unanimous All-Big East preseason pick. He ranked second on the team with 40 receptions for 494 yards (12.4 avg) and five touchdowns in 13 games. He also gained 337 yards on 18 kickoff returns (18.7 avg) and assisted on two tackles, in addition to returning a blocked punt 70 yards.

High School

very skinny WR

I’m surprised we didn’t go with at least one big prospect.

NFL.com analysis of Tiquan

Analysis
Positives: Good height for the position. Has enough straight-line speed to make plays deep down the seam. Uses his long arms to block defensive backs in space for a short time. Reliable hands and able to make a move after the catch. Good vision as a runner. Has experience returning kickoffs, should get a chance there. Special teams gunner who works hard to keep punts out of the end zone.

Negatives: Very wiry build. Long strider who lacks suddenness. Does not get off the line very quickly and lacks the strength to get off a jam outside. Likely best as a number three or four receiver out of the slot. Better when facing the quarterback than trying to track the ball over his shoulder. Hustles to get to his target in the run game, but can gets destroyed due to his lack of upper body strength. Seems reluctant to go over the middle, looks to get hit before the ball gets there although he usually makes the catch.

Walterfootball about the jaguars picks

2009 NFL Draft Picks:

8. Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
I will never bash a team for taking an elite left tackle in the NFL Draft. I don’t know what the Jaguars plan on doing with William Tra Thomas, but when they brought him in, I don’t think they anticipated Eugene Monroe being available. (Pick Grade: A)

39. Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
I guess the Jaguars didn’t get the memo that you can only start two offensive tackles; not four. What is Jacksonville going to do with Eugene Monroe, William Tra Thomas, Tony Pashos and Eben Britton? Perhaps some new formation like the Wildcat, only you use all offensive linemen? (Pick Grade: D)

72. Terrance Knighton, DT, Temple
The Jaguars really needed some help at defensive tackle to replace Marcus Stroud. Can Terrance Knighton be that guy? We’ll find out, but I like how Jacksonville is addressing both sides of the line of scrimmage. (Pick Grade: B)

73. Derek Cox, CB, William & Mary
So much for taking the best player available. Derek Cox is horrendous value in the third round. He fills a need though, so this isn’t a complete fail. (Pick Grade: F)

107. Mike Thomas, WR/KR, Arizona
Jacksonville had to find a receiver relatively early in the 2009 NFL Draft. Mike Thomas also provides added value as a return specialist. (Pick Grade: A)

144. Jarett Dillard, WR, Rice
Gene Smith really loves going back-to-back at the same position. He’s getting really good value here with Jarett Dillard though. (Pick Grade: A)

180. Zach Miller, TE, Nebraska-Omaha
Great… A second tight end named Zach Miller to confuse us all in our fantasy football leagues. Miller’s in this draft range, so this seems like a solid choice. (Pick Grade: B)

250. Rashad Jennings, RB, Liberty
Wow… Rashad Jennings could have been drafted in the second round. Even if Jennings doesn’t pan out, this is a great pick in terms of value. Jennings could be a very solid complement to Maurice Jones-Drew. (Pick Grade: A)

253. Tiquan Underwood, WR, Rutgers
Solid draft value here. This is Jacksonville’s third receiver, which isn’t surprising, given the problems they had at the position. (Pick Grade: B)

I don't get the criticism on taking Britton

Tackle is a position you can never have too much of a good thing

Absolutely

And what’s wrong with moving one of them temporarily to guard?

by MoveThoseChains on Apr 26, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

we also have to think about how our locker room respond...

I get the criticism, it’s justified in the sense that others may not see him as the BPA; but it was clear from the video’s the Jags had made up their mind on his relative position on their board.

Because

he didn’t know, that Britton might will be this team’s RT for the next decade,, and don’t know about our plans. You should look what grade he gave to the AFC West teams:
Here you can see for every team the grades:

Yea obviously who ever wrote that doesn’t realize what happens we you have no depth on the o-line. We found out last year. Plus brittons not playing LT he is competing for RT.

Zoltan

you have made this the easiest draft to follow. Thank you for all of you insite.

by bigmousecountry on Apr 26, 2009 7:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He is the risk

because of the second round to the Pats, but if he will be a starting Quality CB, and the others work out as ell, we have a veeeery good draft. What a start of the rebuilding!

I'm happy with it

We could of drafted Rashad Jennings there and no one would question it, but we got him in the 7th. It all worked out great I think.

OK folks

It is time to give some rest to my eyes! I hope when I wake up, and open it I will see a lot of good UFAs too.
It was a GREAT PLEASURE to follow this 2 days with ALL OF YOU!

Character & Chemistry

Folks, this is a completely new football team, replete with players of character. Look at who we got rid of (Jones, Williams, Barnes, Porter, Florence, etc.) … look at the free agents we signed (Thomas, Considine, Holt) … and look at the guys we’ve picked the past two days: smart guys, character guys, hard workers, team captains. This has all morphed into a watershed moment for this franchise. You can take issue with a pick here and there (I certainly question giving up next year’s 2), but you cannot question the positive direction of this team and its chemistry. Congratulations to everyone responsible for making it happen.

here's two

Spillman, C.J. – a do everything safety, but didn’t really stand out, fast enough for the NFL
Emanuel Cook – big hitting but slow and small saftey with stone hands, junior I think

by alsonot on Apr 26, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

of the QB's left

I don’t see much available, but I think Jason Boltus is worth bringing in. His good numbers don’t count for much because he played at a division III school (Hartwick).

He’s big enough (6’3), smart enough (pre-med student). He throws hard, but has too long a windup and can’t throw the check-down passes with any touch (familiar?).

He doesn’t show great agility or footwork but I think hes’ got some of tools to get better, seems a little fast despite a 4.8 combine number; he’s ran a 4.74 and claims he can do better.

more Boltus stuff

http://www.realfootball365.com/articles/nfl/13676

“That 40 time was better than all but four other quarterbacks, one of whom was Pat White. His 26 bench reps? Better than all but two tight ends, a half-dozen linebackers and every cornerback — you know, guys who play a position where being able to move around a lot of dead weight actually means something.

By the way, for some extra added insanity, in addition to putting up better stats on paper, most of Boltus’ combine numbers were better than Stafford’s — with their 40 times only .02 seconds apart."

Geesh Gene wasn't playing when he said he'd address WR and OT

We got arguably the two of best OTs in the draft and WRs with speed to burn. Other than Dilliard…every WR drafted runs a 4.4 or better.

it will be interesting to see how many wr’s they keep. with woods and that other guy
