Rashad Jennings may be the steal of this years draft...

(Editors note:  I loved the tone of this fanpost - Terry)

The more I look at this year's draft the more I wish we would have pulled the trigger and promoted Gene Smith couple of years ago. I liked Shack but the selection method he employed wasn't very good in selecting top NFL talent. Enter Gene Smith. Only time will tell but this draft could be the best in Jags history. I know that may be a bit optimistic but if the top half of the draft pans out like it should with Monroe and Britton, the bottom half may be just as strong (maybe better?). The three receivers we got late look very promising, but I think Rashad Jennings may be the steal of the 2009 draft. The fact that he was playing ahead of Lesean McCoy as freshmen at Pitt is a good sign. I also consider the fact that he transferred to Liberty not because of academics or disciplinary actions but to be close to his Dad and family is also a positive in regards to character and heart. Check out this youtube video of Jennings...Rashad Jennings Video pretty cool.   He looks explosive and seems to be a north-south runner who also has the speed to turn the corner. He also  catches the ball well. I know he played against smaller schools while at liberty but in this years Senior Bowl he led all rushers . I see a strong possibility that he will be getting substantial carries this year as a Jaguar.

Good job, Gene Smith.  Thank you for bringing excitment back to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Have you noticed?

How much we’ve seen Gene Smith since taking over the job? You can count on one hand how many times Shack Harris addressed the media over the last 6 years. Gene is the anti-Shack and I love that now we have a GM that actually talks to us.

Also

Have you noticed that you don’t see as much of Del Rio anymore or when the Jags have a press conference you see both of them and Gene being in the Alpha Dog role and Del Rio following his lead. One can only imagine what kind of meeting those two must have had behind close doors

I think it was a simple meeting

“Thanks Jack, I’ll consider that when I make my decision” – Gene

He looks good!

Hard to predict how he will perform against NFL defences, but he looks pretty impressive in that YouTube clip.

I like the Fred comparison

He kind of has that stutter step

I watched his youtube video last night

I’m thoroughly impressed with this guy. Take the fact he was a 7th round pick and his level of talent, and I think he will be the steal of at least OUR draft. With our new line, I think our running game is going to push for #1 in the league this season.

I agree with that sentiment...

If you notice, this guy put up big numbers because he is that good! Started in front of McCoy because he was better, and would have put up similar numbers had he stayed at Pitt IMO.

Great character, unselfish, and leads by example. Great pick!

Also, after watching his vid, he reminds me of Shaun Alexander when he runs. His 40 time might not be great, but his game speed looks really good.

I really could care less about 40 times. I'm serious

Some play alot faster than their 40. Some play alot slower (Matt Jones epitomizes that statement)

by Blair72 on Apr 29, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the combine numbers were low on everyone

harvin ran a 4.4 ish, hes faster than that

moreno was 4.5 range
beanie wells was 4.5 range and threw down a 4.37 at pro day

But were talking almost .3 seconds.

That’s a big drop. More so than Wells. None the less, you won’t hear me complain about it.

How fast is everyone else?

Some of those DB’s in his highlight video were keeping up or even catching up, and then some looked like they were running in mud. He looks fast enough to succeed in the NFL.

Nice field vision and a physical runner…I liked what I saw.

Plus dont forget....

we have the best unknown backs in the league I think…We didnt draft CW Chris Wells because we have our own CW Chauncey Washington, or baby Fred. Then we add Rashad Jennings?!!!! Hey where is D. D. Terry I liked him too???

I love commenting on here.....but I don't want to sound uninformed....

is Pola the Jags running back coach? I know I could look it up online somewhere else but this site has become my first choice for Jag info. I may be getting older but fortunately when presented with important info, I’ve saved enough brain cells to soak it up like a sponge. Hell, maybe even a shamwow! Now what was I asking, oh yeah, is Pola the rb coach?

by Jaggernaut on Apr 29, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kennedy Pola is the uncle of Steelers Safety Troy Polomalu

He is also the Jaguars Runningbacks coach and has been since 2005. Those great running games you remember were because of his coaching and Andy Heck (o-line).

Thanks....

and that’s cool how he was named Kennedy after JFK, being born on the day JFK was killed.

I read the Houston Texans draft blog

 "Take Rashad Jennings!!!" – Shit
"Take Rashad Jennings!!!" – Damn
"Jags got him" – Ahhhh!!!

Jennings looks awesome

Vic was hoping we got Wells in the 1st round, but we got this guy who, like Wells, is 6’1" and 230+ lbs.

And his vision is awesome, in his video his cutbacks were amazing, kind of like Fred…

BTW Elmer

I believe we cut D.D. Terry last summer during camp after we got Chauncey Washington, because I liked him too. But I think he wasn’t improving.

Pat Kirwan from NFL.com

consider the Jennings pick as a steal as well. I hope he will show this at the field too.

Rashard Jennings, the running back out of Liberty, was a steal at pick No. 250. I watched him at the Senior Bowl and he will be a capable backup to Maurice Jones-Drew.

Thanks Terry....

for the exposure. I was on the Sports Illustrated site when I saw my headline under the Jags section. Really cool. Now I know how Zoltan felt with his piece on Monroe. However, I called my older brother to show off and he thought it was cool but then he, after reading the comments, busted my chops for being a self acclaimed Jag Fan and not knowing who Kennedy Pola was!

Not at all...

it’s all about a team effort! It reminded me of a couple of years ago when I covered sports part time, mostly high school football, for the Times – Union. I used to purposely put in things like “he galloped for 3 scores” or " he tight roped his way down the sideline for the score", just to see what the editor would change. Most of the time they would change the wording but every once in a while I would get one in the paper the next day.

do enjoy the draft pics overall

This is the first draft that I can remember that just about every pick made sense to me. Love this class…we will see.

Some things to Like about Jennings....

after watching that video, there are several things about Rashad that I REALLY like from a pure technique perspective and if you go back and re-watch the video after reading this you will see these things…and all of them are GREAT things for a young RB to have.

1) The Lean – Jennings runs leaning forward (like a cholo) which allows him to have the forward motion leverage/advantage when he makes contact.

2) The Legs keep Churning – Watch him when he is tackled…those legs keep going and going…there are several clips where he is flat on the ground and he is STILL trying to run the ball.

3) He is the first one to Pop up out of a pile – Indicates that he LOVES making contact and he has a motor that just wont be stopped.

4) He is not afraid to drop that shoulder and plow the defender down – No explanation needed here!

5) He doesnt give up – there are several clips where he was “had” and he didnt lay down and freed himself

6) Dude PUSHES PILES!

7) Atitude- You can see by the way he celebrates his TD’s that he feels satisfaction in his work and he is having fun, but not cocky.

Any thoughts? I second that this guy is Fred Taylor-esque…he cant cut like Freddy and not quite as shifty..but he is patient like Freddy was waiting for the hole to open up and he will burn a lot of guys even in the NFL running north and south,

Go Jags! Some people are like Slinky's...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

I really like this post

but LeSean McCoy was still in high school when Jennings was a freshman at Pitt.

I thought he looked good.

I like the fact that he identifies the lane and cuts back quickly to hit it and then he’s gone. Very Freddie T

what i like the most

is that we now have three running backs that can get five yards a pop and more in MJD, jennings, and gred jones. with are new line added to that equation we are going to be a dommenent fore on offence for years to come. but are D needs help.
