Greg Jones Needs Another Chance at RB
A Pro-Bowler in 2007 and Florida State's 6th all-time leading rusher, Greg Jones seems to be overlooked by many when it comes to the Jaguars rushing attack. Perhaps he should be taken into more consideration seeing as when he is healthy, Jones is a freak of nature. Standing at 6'2" and 254 lbs Jones ran the 40 yard dash in the 4.4 range coming out of college. That should tell you what kind of athlete this guy really is.
Thus far, Jones' career has been plagued by several injuries that seem to continuously set him back. In 2005 when Greg was healthy, he rushed for 575 yards and 4 touchdowns despite only getting a few carries per game while Fred Taylor took most of the load. The seasons following would see Greg suffer from 2 major knee injuries. However, in 2007 Jones rose above the injuries and made the pro-bowl as a fullback. Jones has proven that he is without a doubt one of the top fullbacks in the NFL but it is difficult to ignore his incredible athletic ability and freakish phisique. What would happen if the Jaguars were to give him another chance at tailback and the oppertunity to spell Maurice Jones-Drew. Could Montell Owens take over at fullback while great played halfback? Or will the Jaguars even consider him for a tailback position because of his great ability to play fullback. Greg's combination of speed and size make him an ideal NFL halfback. Now that he is back healthy once again, can we at least give him one more chance at the position he excelled at in college and at times in the NFL?
The Jaguars did draft running back Rashad Jennings out of Liberty this year. He also posseses the rare combination of speed and size like Jones. Most Jaguars fans (including myself) are excited for this kid to come in and possibly be the backup to MJD. But let's not jump on the unproven rookie's bandwagon just yet. Despite being thought of as a second to third round draft pick by most analysts, Jennings' fall in the draft may have come due to his low level of competition in college. Will he translate well into the NFL after playing against mediocre to poor talent in College? There is no doubt that he will get his shot and that we will all be rooting for him, but Greg Jones may be the better option at this point. He has proven that he can play at a high level in the NFL (when healthy) and that he is a Pro-Bowl caliber player. As training camp nears, it will be very interesting to see if the Jaguars give Greg Jones a fair shot at running back, or if they write him off as a fullback and decide to give him minimal carries during the year. There is no doubt that players like Jennings and Chauncey Washington will be given their oppertunity to spell Maurice Jones-Drew, but will Greg Jones be given the same luxury? Plenty of people out there, like myself, would argue that Jones has done more than enough to earn a shot at being one of the feature backs for this franchise.

I dont care what position he plays,
he must get more touches. Greg Jones is a proven play maker and can be a weapon with or without the ball. I dont think many defenses could stand the punishment that both MJD and Jones could dish out together.
I agree
Greg is extremely talented and when he gets touches he produces. I predict that at least early in the season Greg will see more touches then he has become accustomed too. I’d love to see 10 or 12 carries a game, it would benefit MJD too with the transition to feature back.
This is relevant to my interests.
Punishing running game, high density masses of human running downhill at linebackers and safeties definitely qualify as good football. If Rashad Jennings plays as well on the field as he looked in mini-camp, I’m hoping for a triple rushing attack that will punish defenders with every carry. Imagine Greg Jones blocking, MJD running through someone, Jennings blocking, Greg Jones running through someone, Greg Jones blocking, Jennings running through someone, etc. Although MJD is smaller, all three runners have excellent size/weight ratios and can potentially be effective blockers, and we already know MJD and Greg Jones are excellent runners. This excites me. Dude, I can’t wait to see some linebackers and DBs get laid out. I think I just drooled a little.
Damn right.
However, blocking at the line is a little different than run blocking, where they have to drive defenders back. Otherwise, defenders can just pop back up and catch the runner.
Wow... Kbot, you and I love the same thing about football...
Smash mouth rushing attack. I would love to see MJD, Rashad, and Greg in the Wishbone 2TE set, and just pound the ball outright every down.

That’s what I love. Run it between the guards for 4 yards and do it again.

It's all about psychological dominance.
Physical dominance will give you that. Once you light someone up, they’ll hesitate when you’re coming at them again. It’s inevitable. Examples that immediately come to mind are the Major Wright hit on Manny Johnson in the UF vs. OU game, or Greg Jone’s hit on Dexter Reid while at FSU.
Greg Jones’ hit is especially dominating. I can almost see a thought bubble pop up in his head that said, “Hey, this guy is in my range, I should tackle him. Wait, he’s the defender, should I juke him, or should I…screw it.”

Theres no rating in Madden for intimidating a guy after you bowled him over.
You mean hit stick?
I haven’t played for years, but I used to habitually flick my thumb towards whoever is coming while watching the Jags or Gators play on TV.
Hit stick is defense, truck stick is offense
Vic would look at me in disgust right now.

forget that 2 TE set. Lets just use 2 extra OT’s(checking in as eligible receivers). Now that’s a scary sight, especially for a smaller defensive front like the Colts.

Rashad
is a horrible blocker as of right now. But like has been stated he has the size to at least be decent.
On Jaguars This Week, Del Rio mentioned that he and Kennedy Pola believe Jennings can develop into a good blocker due to his size and strength. We know how good Kennedy Pola is, so hopefully he’ll be able to improve Jennings’s blocking.
Fun Fact
Kennedy Pola is the uncle of the Steelers well known safty Troy Polamalu, greatness runs threw their veins

Greg Jones
I expect to see Greg at Fullback and when MJD takes a break he will be the running back depending on the down, and distance . I expect to see Washington and Jennings on the field occassionally also. Montell Owens should get some time at fullback as well. and with the oline ( healthly) we should be in the top 10 in rushing this year

Good article, JaxJagsRep
I always think about how a few yrs ago Greg Jones was running the ball so well that everyone was talking about him replacing Fred. Jones went down with the ACL injury, MJD came in as a rookie, and the rest is history.
I love Jones, I think this season we will see him take his game to a…..
WHOLE….. ’NUVA….. LEVEL!!!!!!

I remember
Seeing Greg Jones playing for FSU. He was eye-popping. Here’s a link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wbO3ZOQMbQ – he just kills this guy. He wasn’t nearly as big then as he is now. Greg is insane, diesel.

Soemtimes i hate that we underutilize our Wonderful
Fullback, Greg Jones, and sometimes the TEs. Our main offensive attacks are with the O-LINE and MJD along with the WRs.
