Mini-Camp in the trenches with Monroe and Britton

Buy Digital Prints  Eugene Monroe against Jeremy Mincey.  Eben Britton is number 73 tearing someone up.  Cleo Lemon is the QB.

Buy Digital Prints Mincey tries to turn the corner, Britton is taking someones head off.

Buy Digital Prints Eugene glides to seal off the corner. This is the critical moment as Cleo is getting ready to throw.

Buy Digital Prints Britton has his man neutralized, Eugene safely seals off the back side.

Buy Digital Prints Eugene inflicts final domination.

Did you get called out by a short female security guard on Friday by any chance?

The conversation went something like,

Bitch Security Guard: “Sir, sir, you can’t have that here”
Guy: “What?”
BSG: “That lens is not allowed here”
Guy busts out tape measure: “Yeah, it’s allowed”
Me: “That bitch security guard just got owned”

Nope

My lens is 5 inches. Sounds like she doesn’t understand what 6 inches looks like. Maybe her boyfriend lied to her.

Thanks for this Terry

That’s really awesome stuff. How many times did they go through this particular drill and were the rookies as successful in the other times as they were in this one?

SolCal

You give me too much credit. I pointed the camera and pushed the button. Only when I got home did I know what I shot.

I know

You cant tell much because it is only mini camp and the pads have yet to go on, but it is really nice to see them jacking people up left and right.

by darkseraph18 on May 3, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Early days yet, but still…. I’d rather see the rookies look good now, than look clueless and out of their depth.

Pics are great ...

… but I’d like to hear more personal impressions of the sessions, especially how the young receivers are doing, and also Knighton and Cox.

by ruffdaddy on May 3, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

Knighton

will be the hardest to scout without the pads.

Just watched Del Rio post practice vid

Looks like Justin Durant is going to play middle linebacker. I’m so happy. I was hoping that he would be there. If you’re an IDP fantasy guy talk about a player with upside.

Wow

I thought Daryl had that sealed up.

As The Middle Linebacker

by Bestjagfan on May 3, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

He's just not

as good in coverage. His back pedal sucks in comparison. Last year we got killed over the middle by the pass.

by Ewdtrey on May 3, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Good Point. Daryl needs to just go back to the strong side, as he is great at shedding blocks. Can Clint handle the weak side? I think so, but it remains to be seen.

Thats Good For Another Jacksonville... First Down.

by Bestjagfan on May 3, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if I had to guess

He’s not made for that spot physically, at least physically speaking, but he will be more than adequate.

by Ewdtrey on May 3, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Clint's a good backer

But I wonder if he has the necessary speed to play weakside.

Thats Good For Another Jacksonville... First Down.

by Bestjagfan on May 3, 2009 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

he’s faster than most any LB’s in this years draft. And he can rush the passer on passing downs, reducing his hindrance in coverage. Not that he’s that bad, he’s actually pretty good. He’s just not exceptional like Durant.

by Ewdtrey on May 3, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

IM KIND OF SURPRISED

I would think that durant would be more suited to play at outside LB

by darkseraph18 on May 3, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

He's made for WLB

size and speed wise, but he will be in on more plays at MLB. Why take your best player out on nickel situations?

by Ewdtrey on May 3, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess

I just got caught off guard because I figured it was a forgone conclusion that Smith was our MLB

by darkseraph18 on May 3, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Same Here

I had just kind of accepted Daryl as the Mike at the end of last season, and thats how I thought it would be this upcoming season as well. But if he needs to go back to Sam and make room for Durant, I’m fine with that. Whatever the coaches can do to get the defense back to top 10 form is fine with me.

Thats Good For Another Jacksonville... First Down.

by Bestjagfan on May 3, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

I think putting your most athletic LB in that position is what Jack wants to do. Imagine a young Ray Lewis. I think we are watching our defense get a lot better right before our eyes. Cox is going to play opposite Rasheen, with B. Williams and Considine at safety if Nelson doesn’t show any Ed Reed signs. I hope Scott Starks is healthy. I haven’t really seen what he could do when healthy. He must have some talent if he stays hurt but on the team. Not sure what to think about Knighton, but our DE’s have got to play better or all of this is null and void.

by DeeMoe on May 3, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a feeling with Durant

in the middle and Considine at SS we might see the SS in the box more.

by Ewdtrey on May 3, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

of course

We have got to stop the run. That is the first agenda. With the cornerbacks we have, it is truly necessary.

by DeeMoe on May 3, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I just hate

putting Nelson into single coverage over the top. If we are going to do that, we might as well put somoene like Brian Witherspoon back there, because Nelson is always a step late. He’s not back there stopping the run anyhow.

by Ewdtrey on May 3, 2009 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I just hate

putting Nelson anywhere in coverage. I’m trying to wonder if he is studying film or listening to his coaches. Mel Tucker is strong with DBs. I hope he can influence him in the right way. Hate to waste such talent and athletic ability.

by DeeMoe on May 3, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Now that's something

I thought they should do last year. Would it have hurt us? Not really. Maybe that is still an option for this year.

Secondary

CB1 Mathis
FS: Nelson
SS Brian Williams or Considine
CB2 Cox
NB Scott Starks

that seems to be the fan consensus

JDR said b will is at rcb…..i say smokescreen. Remember last year, b will was corner too, then all of a sudden its a surprise that hes the ss

Surreal to be Teal

by Surteal on May 4, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Not really.

It was the other way around. B Will was supposed to be a SS leaving Flo at CB, but flo got hurt and then sucked when he came back which is why Will moved to CB for the rest of the year for the most part. (Remember the whole “two birds with one stone” comment Flo made at the beginning of camp)
B Will was horrendous at SS. Too slow to cover and not physical enough to cover TE’s or to stop the run really well.

by Ewdtrey on May 4, 2009 5:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Williams

Williams is too slow for a CB too nember seeing the highlights of him trying to cover Wayne and wayne blew right by him every time for the score. Cox will be the starter cause he has the speed to cover and the skills. Now it is only the beginning and its not training camp yet but time will tell

by jesusjagfan2009 on May 4, 2009 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree with both of you

I think Brian Willaims is an adequate cornerback

by Blair72 on May 4, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

He's adequate

But not very good. I’m hoping Cox can come take that RCB spot, so that B Dub can be adequate at SS which looks to have very inadequate depth right now.

by Bestjagfan on May 4, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

when the brought

Drayton Florence in, there was an interview that said Brian Williams was still the starter at RCB. Vic and most peopled called the switch, but the coaching staff never said it until late training camp.

Florence said something to the line of his bringing in “killed two birds with one stone”. Which we all knew what it meant, but the coaches thought they were secretive.

It looks like Monroe is blocking...

…#54, who is Quentin Groves. That is more impressive than Mincey.

by acedarney on May 4, 2009 8:42 AM EDT reply actions

Quentin Groves is 54 - you are correct

Butthe picture is Mincey 94. You have to look at the sequence to catch it all. Great spot.

Groves was on the other side. I have a larger picture that shows him over there.

Terry...

Who was at center during this sequence, Miller or Meester? If Miller, what was your take?

by JagsCub on May 4, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Meester and Miller were both in

I think Miller was at center and Meester was at left guard. I can’t tell from the photos but i wil look.

That's odd

Miller being at C is one thing. I don’t like that so much even, but Meester at guard is a horrible idea.
