Jags sign Todd Bouman Again

Competition for the Jaguars backup quarterback job is heating up with the acquisition of 11-year veteran Todd Bouman. Bouman agreed to terms Monday afternoon with the Jaguars, and will join the club next week in time for the club’s May 18th organized team activities. Bouman’s one-year deal is the result of the team’s desire to push current backup Cleo Lemon, who struggled last week at minicamp. The Jags carried just two quarterbacks on the active roster last year, and it’s expected the team will do the same this season. But with the Jags opening up competition for the No. 2 job behind David Garrard, the loser of that battle will likely be cut. Bouman has played on six different NFL teams, including the Jaguars. He spent part of the ’07 season as a backup to Quinn Gray, who was replacing an injured Garrard. Bouman re-signed with the Jaguars during the ’08 offseason, but was released after training camp. Lemon signed a three-year deal worth a little less than $9 million during free agency last year, but played in only one game, going 0 for 2 in mop-up action in a 38-14 win at Detroit. Headed into that season, Lemon appeared to struggle at grasping the Jags’ offense, and performed somewhat poorly during minicamp and training camp. Prior to that, Lemon enjoyed a breakout season at Miami in ’07, passing for 1,773 yards and six touchdowns in addition to running for another four TDs in seven starts. Jaguars general manager Gene Smith expressed a desire to address the quarterback position in the draft last month, but the talent pool on the board dwindled before the Jags could make a move. The club wants a consistent performer behind Garrard in case of injury.

How was he a bust....

The guy did fine in Preseason, and is a legit #2… Todd Bouman is not as good as Cleo. Period.

Cleo is a good back-up. Not a starter, but by no means a bust either.

$9 million

For a guy who didn’t show anything on a consistent basis. I’m not sure if you saw the same Cleo Lemon I did in the last preseason. If Lemon was looking like a solid #2, would the Jags have brought in Bouman?

Actually, Bouman was great last preseason

That’s why he got picked up by another team, although I didn’t care to pay attention to who. I honestly think Bouman is better than Lemon, and I think we should give him a chance at backup. He’s a hell of a lot cheaper, and he’s been in the league alot longer. You don’t want a young guy with little experience and no future starting potential at backup. You either want an experienced vet, or you want a young guy you can mold into the franchise. Lemon is neither of those.

Bust?

Yeah right. Cleo is a hell of a backup. I think one position the Jags and their fans alike have been spoiled is backup quarterback. Even recently, Garrard sure was a good backup for Leftwich, took the starting job from him. Quinn Gray was a good backup in the 2007 season. Won us a few games in Garrard’s three game absence. Cleo is another quality backup. He’s better than some teams starters.

I'm also joining

the Cleo is a good back-up wagon. He is capable what Quinn Gray did in 2007, winning2 games from 4. Bouman will compete for a 3rd QB spot, with Paul Smith I guess. Remeber Tim Couch was also signed here a couple of years ago for 1 month, and then he was cut!

Its Not A Bandwagon

Its a fact. Cleo is a good backup.

Fixed.

“He ain’t no lemon, no pun intended.”

I fixed it for you, unless you had previously questioned his zesty-ness. In which case: no, he is a human.

i think we still have to say where we got the information above, especially since it’s copied straight from the Times Union. Anyone know the rule about that? Gracias for the post though!

Competition

We need all the competition we can get, it will only make us better.

I'll have to agree with.....

The Forgetten bust bandwagon, i agree having a good backup is reassuring but 9 Million is a tad to much for me even tho Cleo came to my Middle school to promote something or the other, in the 7th round instead of Tiquan Underwood i really wanted a QB, specifically John Parker Wilson but he’s with Atlanta now.

Mini camp discovery

no one could throw the ball. It was pathetic.

That's the second time I've seen you say that... That's not encouraging at all... even if it is the first camp of the season.

They will improve though… nothing to really start worrying about yet.

even Garrard?

+1

The QBs must have been looking at the kickers as well, since that seems to be all that the Jags wanted us to see. My analysis of the week: all of our kickers have two legs, seem to be able to kick balls, and Scobee managed to hit a ball out of midair with a thrown ball. I think we just found our backup QB.

Ooooh Hellllllll

Why let go Nathan Brown? Develop your own Product Jack!!!! The dude is a good QB…..Put him on the practice squad, send him to Europe to win a couple of championships…..2 days in the NFL!!!! Thats cold!!! I really liked the kid.. AKA Matt Cassel…. a Good Coach Poduct!! Why play with someone you cut before, I would have rather Leftwich if thats the case, atleast you would have a line for him now and you could see what he can really do with some time in the pocket…..Oh and also some WR who can catch a pass!!!

remember… the final roster is months and months away… anyone can be resigned or let go… whichever.

he is good but

Cleo is good but come on now you are paying 9 mil to someone who is riding pine most of the season. Let Bouman have a shot if he can beat him out take him for cheaper and save the money

NO NO NO NO NO

i think are draft was spot on it was beautiful we filled everything we needed on are starting roster all but a star SS but other then that we did amazing. i thought we had a very good chance to mold that brown into a very exsplsive QB he sounded like a steal but the jags dont think so and thats all that matters in the end. we will get a ss next year and a young QB in the draft. anyways i think mark is going to be a bust and is going to get injerd right off the bat he playd evey single game last year in a knee brace he has like 40 year old knees im glad we did not pick him.

LOL!!! Just joking, I didn't want Sanchez

Just being sarcastic :)

All the experts thought we’d pick him, but I’m glad we didn’t, too.

Quinn Gray made a bad decision

He wasn’t happy here, he wanted to test the free agent market and go somewhere where he could start.

And he still ended up a backup – he didn’t learn from Garrard’s patience.

Don't 4get we still have Paul Smith at QB too

Obviously Nathan Brown couldn’t even beat him out…
