Featured Late Round Pick: HB Rashad Jennings, Liberty University
via c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com
HB Rashad Jennings, of Liberty, was drafted by the Jaguars with pick 250. He was not even picked in the alloted 7 rounds of the NFL Draft. He was selected with a compensatory selection that teams receive after experiencing a net loss in free agency the year prior. His pick was 9 picks after the 7th round. Was this his value? Does he even possess the skills worthy of a realistic shot at making the Jaguars roster?
Rashad Jennings was originally the starting HB at Pittsburgh. He only played there during his freshman season, but he managed to rush for 411 yards on 86 attempts with a long of 31 and a lone TD. He averaged an amazing 4.8 yards a carry during that span. Rashad's first game was against historic Notre Dame. They lost 42-21 but he still managed 29 yards on only 7 carries (4.1 ypa). Highlights of that season include 11 carries for 102 yards against Cincinnati. He ran for 70 yards on 12 attempts (5.8 ypa) against Louisville--who finished 9-3 in 2005. He later ran for 69 yards on 13 attempts (5.3 ypa) at West Virginia--who finished11-1 in 2005. Rashad proved that year, that when given the opportunity, he could run with the big boys.
That would be his only season at Pitt. His father was diagnosed with diabetes and had to have a leg amputated. Jennings, being the good man that he is, transferred to nearby Liberty University so that he could help take care of his father. It truly is a great story. Jennings was willing to sacrifice playing at a major college program. A sacrifice that reduced his exposure and caused him to get drafted in the 7th round as opposed to the 2nd--where Pittsburgh HB LeSean McCoy was drafted this year. Jennings is a true man for swallowing that pill willingly, but he played his heart out. This was noticed by his teammates and he found himself elected to be an offensive team captain.
In Jennings' senior season at Liberty, he ran for 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns. His career totals at Liberty are as follows: 4,051 yards, 42 TD's, no fumbles, and 22 games of over 100-yards rushing.
Jennings stands 6'1" and weighs 231 lb.s. He has only 5% body fat. At the NFL Combine, where top players are annually invited to perform drills in front of teams, Jennings ran a slow 40-yard dash at 4.67 seconds. He bench-pressed 225 lb.s 29 times. This was the second most for RB's. His vertical jump was 34" and his broad jump was 10'. He also turned in a 6.86 second time at the 3-cone drill, good enough for 5th best among RB's. He had a 4.20 second time in the 20-yard shuttle and an 11.46 time in the 60-yard shuttle. He is a power back the proved himself on the field and at the combine. He is not the type of back that runs flashy in t-shirt workouts, he just runs guys over on the field. Sports Illustrated's on-line draft section had him graded as a second/third round pick.
When new Jaguars GM, Gene Smith, saw that Jennings was still on the board, he had to be pleased. Smith looks for two things: 1) Character and 2) Production. Jennings, as you can tell from the above read, has both and he joins a rookie class full of former team captains. When life is too big, Jennings keeps humble and looks to God for the answer. In today's NFL, where ego's and paychecks come first, Jennings is refreshing. He is a guy worth rooting for.
Jennings enters a backfield in Jacksonville that will have a new look in 2009. Long-time great Fred Taylor was let go in free agency so that 4th-year back Maurice Jones-Drew could be the feature back. Jones-Drew is a touchdown vulture with 38 in his 3-year career. FB Greg Jones was a star at Florida State and the plan was for Jones to see 10-15 touches a game. The Jaguars have one more fullback in Montell Owens who has made a name for himself on Special Teams and received a contract this spring making him a lock to be around for a while. Other back-ups include Alvin Pearman and Chauncey Washington. Pearman was re-signed late last season once injuries hit the Jaguars. He was re-signed for depth but managed to catch a TD pass in week 17 against the Ravens. Washington was active late last season (his rookie year) but never managed to do anything worth reporting. He looked good in the pre-season, whatever that is worth to you. Can Jennings find his way up the line-up and eventually keep Greg Jones at FB? Will he be "that guy" from 2009 that teams are sorry they passed on? I believe so. It may not be 2009, but remember his name. When some draft "experts" slate you anywhere from the late 2nd round to the early 5th round and you get drafted in the 7th, you have a chip on your shoulder.

I met Reggie Williams at the Boynton Beach mall on Saturday... It was awesome... got to chat with him for about 10 mins uninterrupted.
I came at the end of the signing. I told him who I was and he knew the site… haha… he said we were a little hard on him sometimes and we had a good laugh… Quality guy.
I mentioned Donnie Henderson’s firing and about Rashean Mathis role in that. He laughed again and said in so many words that they did not mesh. He was a bad fit for the whole defense.
I asked about Derek Cox and didnt know who I was talkin bout at first, but then he said, “Oh yeah, the kid they ain’t have no film on, he’s somthin.” I asked if he got Reggie’s seal of approval and he said yeah definitely. that sho

sorry, hit post early... continuing on..
That should show you the true skill of the Jaguar scouting department… They had men on the field scouting him in person and there was no film on the kid. That’s true scouting. Contrast that with the Cincinnati Bungles, who don’t even have a scouting department…
I asked reggie about The new def coordinator, and he said Del Rio is running the defense… It’s all Del Rio. this new guy is mainy Db’s coach and reggie was very praiseworthy of his teaching skill. He said he was way different than Donnie’s in your face style.
BTW… Reggie was looking stacked, like a PRO… I forgot to ask about the new weightlifting regimen, it just slipped my mind.
I expect big things from the team this season, and especially from Reggie.

I think the reason some of us fans are “critical” of Nelson is that he just has so much potential. If he has a good year… it’s almost like he never lived up to that potential, because he SHOULD have had an amazingly good year.
I’m really excited about Rashad Jennings, I’m hoping that he is going to astonish people. For a 7th round pick he looks pretty damn good – the kind of guy who gets other scouting teams into trouble (as in “wtf is wrong with you? why didnt YOU see this guy??”)

I'm glad to see that everyone thinks that Rashad Jennings is going to make an impact.
I think at the end of the year, Rashad Jennings will be mentioned in the same breath as great finds such as Marques Colston. (with a better story to boot!)

That's pretty reasonable.
Despite the logjam at RB, I think he’ll end up being the primary complement to MJD. Greg Jones is really too valuable as a blocking fullback for him to in that role. On the other hand, I feel that Jennings can also develop into a good blocker, and the MJD, Jones, Jennings combo can really wreak some havoc on opposing defenses. Evidence shows that even stronger D-linemen can get lit up by blocking backs when they’re looking elsewhere. Imagine any of the three blocking while another runs. Defenses will be caught second guessing themselves, and the blocker will be able to open lanes. They’ll never be completely sure who’s blocking, and who’s carrying the ball. Sweet.

montel owens just got re-signed
plus there is some thought we may keep another FB, like Brock Bolen..
That puts us at 5 in the backfield if we lose two. It is a crowded backfield, that’s for sure.
Jennings,
MJD
Greg Jones
Montell Owens
Alvin Pearman
Chauncy Washington

Likely Pearman.
He was picked back up mid-season last year, so he was likely there to fill room.

I have
almost no doubt that Rashad Jennings will be an impact player this year. If he still looks good after the pads go on – watch out.

Impact player? I’d say we’ll see that he was a VERY good value pick. I say that because we have a good amount of veterans who will get way more playing time. The major thing that stuck out about his college stats was no fumbles. Did I read that right? NO fumbles??? Amazing if true.

Here's what they said on his scouting report
“Tendency to Fumble: Jennings has not really had too many fumble issues, mostly due to facing inferior competition, but his ball distribution skills could be a concern at the next level. He does a good job protecting the ball running up the middle, but does hold it loosely when turning the corners, as he will fail to distribute the ball away from the defender.”
The interesting thing is I couldn’t find any statistics where it said he did. But then again they don’t record fumbles if a player on your team recovers. Still though, that is unheard of if true…

I did find this from November 12, 2008
Rashad Jennings fumbles have been rare this season. Before losing the ball on his first carry last Saturday at VMI, he hadn’t fumbled since losing one in the opener against North Greenville Aug. 30.

Thanks for the post. Well written...
I appreciate the numbers. Now what do his numbers look like when compared to Greg, Brock, Owens, Alvin, and Chauncy? It seems like every year we’re getting excited about another steal of a pickup only to be let down when they fail to make the final roster.
Is he gonna plow through guys like Bettis or just stop and fall to the ground like Chauncy. Clearly he isn’t going to dance around like Barry Sanders but he needs to be able to catch well. I haven’t seen anything promising about his ability to catch in the backfield. Thus far no one has steped up and given defenses a reason to fear our long ball. Until that happens, all our backs need to be able to catch.
That’s the magic with MJD. He does it all and you don’t have to hold your breath when they throw the ball his way.
What happens when he’s out for a few plays or worse, hurt. We need a complete backup. Whether it’s Jennings or one of the other guys, we’re gonna need the whole package.
I hope I’m wrong about Jennings because he seems like a pretty cool cat, however, I’d rather see clips of him stiff arming a DBack like the Ricky W of old or sidestepping a tackle than watching him out benching everyone.
I don’t know of any bodybuilders who have lifted the Lombardi Trophy.

I never doubt the information, but I tweak the writing so much that I wonder if it flows.
I’m on vacation in Florida, not j ville, and white boy is burnt. When I get back, I’ll try and find some old stats on all them.
If you wanna do it, espn should gave college stats. You can’t search espn. You have to google their name and espn to find the college player profile.

Jennings may have what it takes
It’s hard to say about guys from small schools. His numbers aren’t gaudy but that is probably because he was surrounded by small school athletes and not because of a lack of talent. On the contrary, behind a pro line he might be incredible. I think he will make the team at Pearman’s or Washington’s expense.
by elgatojaguar on Jun 23, 2009 11:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
With a big enough line my mother could be incredible...
I agree with you on Pearman and Washington. Pearman’s course has ran. Washington was big only because he played behind a monstrous line at a big school. To be worthy, he needs to learn the whole package.
That’s the problem. We’ve got a lot of backs all with great individual qualities but not two with all around good qualities. Take a minute and watch Jennings highlights on youtube. He fails to protect the ball in traffic consistently. Watch how his arms swing outward. In the pros, the ball will be stripped.
I wish someone would sit this guy down and have him watch some old Terrell Davis highlights. I loath the Broncos but TD polished every aspect of the back job.
By the way. Does anyone know what this guys Wonderlic score was?

It’s a pretty exhaustive list courtesy of PFW. It’s interesting that Underwood had one of the highest scores at the combine, and a relief to see that no one we picked up scored in the Vince Young range.

Not surprising
but relatively nice scores across the board for us.
Looks like Harvin didn’t do so well.
by Ewdtrey on Jun 24, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope.
Along with Harvin, I recall seeing a few 10-and-belows. Seriously, they’ve got to be brain dead to score that low. I can’t imagine staring at a circle, triangle, rectangle, and square, and not knowing which one is different from the rest, or contemplating “up is to down, as hot is to…”. I wonder what would happen if it was fill-in-the-blank. I’m guessing we’ll see a few, “up is to down, as hot is to…booty.”

RE: "I loath the Broncos but..."
Those of us in the Blue & Orange aren’t usually Jaguars fans either, for obvious reasons going back to ‘96. But you have done decently by one of our successful draft picks (Hayward), and this year you got two draftees that I really would’ve liked to see playing out West: Jennings and Dillard.
So, while I won’t be a huge Jags fan during the season; I do think you got a couple of quality young men that I hope do a good job for you. And if Jennings delivers like Davis did a decade ago… all I can say is enjoy it, because it’s a rare pleasure, and is over before you know it.

Good running backs are always fun to watch.
As for drafting them, we haven’t had much of a problem with finding talented runners with Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Greg Jones. Nonetheless, I agree that good runners are always a pleasure to watch.

Hello?
Who missed me?
Quick thoughts, and then I’ll probably disappear for a month (hopefully not).
1) I love this site, but man have I been busy.
2) Dennis Northcutt to the Lions. Somehow, I feel they are the only team we could have even asked that would actually give us something in return. Good trade, cuz we would have cut him anyway. Now more depth at safety. That’s a good thing. Wish we could have gotten a DT though. (In the wrong fanpost, I know)
3) Buy a Cadillac CTS, start hosting a karaoke show every few nights a week, and you will have girls blowing your phone up and beating your door down…. trust me. :)
4) Child support is expensive. 446 dollars a month for one little boy? Dead serious.
5) Ok, back to football…. I am going to try to write something up this week. Stay tuned.
6) Rashad Jennings is going to be a beast. If I had to pick two sleepers for this team, it’s him and Zach Miller. I see Miller taking over the starting spot eventually. Write that down, so I can tell you I told you so later. Jennings will be a solid #2 RB eventually.

Finally back ay?
2. I agree. In fact I was just thinking about how we should have stolen Shaun Rodgers from them a couple years ago. At the very least we would have beaten the Browns with him on our team instead. haha
6. Miller will not be a starter unless he somehow becomes some kind of super blocker for his 245 lbs size. Remember we are a run first team, and none of our new receivers can block like Wilford and R Williams did in the past. As for Jennings, I think we should cool on him a lot. Word is that he’s not a good blocker, and you know that means he’s not gonna see the field a whole lot especially when you got someone like Greg Jones as an alternative to MJD. Jennings also still has to work on getting his pads down lower. My sleepers are Miller, Thomas, and Knighton. Knighton will take some time to develop though.
by Ewdtrey on Jun 30, 2009 5:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jennings
You have to remember though. MJD was super high on Jennings before he was even drafted by us. MJD was a fan of his before the draft, and I think that says alot. It’s more of a guess than anything, but I just have a good feeling about him. Usually, my intuition is not completely wrong.
Miller will have to be developed into a better blocker, I totally agree. However, his threat down the field is going to be tremendous. Look for him to open up the offense in ways the team had planned for Marcedes. That’s how I feel. This kid is electric, something special, and I’m going to be watching him close in preseason.
