Jaguar Smackdown

I don't know how many of you gents are into mma but being as bored as I am at the moment I thought I might throw this out there. Who on the Jaguars roster would make the best ultimate fighter? Things to take in account would be speed, reaction, strength, stamina, and any previous specialty training such as wrestling or bjj. I know Donovan Darius used to train mma for great cardio workouts. I also believe Michael Westbrook from the Redskins has a few professional fights under his belt. Anyone seen the clip of him busting in Stephen Davis's head at practice? Anyways, who would make the best professional fighter or I guess you could answer what Jag can put a whooping on all the others? Again, I'm just a little bored and not much football related going on right now.

I’m thinking Britton. He’s got a mean streak and a motor…I guess a not so fragile big John.

That UDFA from UConn

He looked jacked in the videos I saw of him, also maybe Clint Ingram.

Ummm....

I’d put my money on Greg Jones destroying some people.

My first thought was GJ too

but I got thinking, “what about Marcedes Lewis.” He’s a 6’7", long armed, ripped 275 lbs man with some speed. You know he’s got athleticism with his basketball background. He’s also a tough guy, which shows in his blocking and tackle breaking ability (Which is really underrated).

He’s definitely a bigger guy than he looks like on TV.

O yeah, from what I hear, Greg Jones has a bit of a boxing background. And his cousin is the famous boxing champ Joe Frazier.

Hmmm

… I used to do MMA as a sport in my slightly younger years (not at UFC level, obviously). 2 things I learned are:

1) you can NEVER tell by looking at a guy’s height and build how good a fighter he will be. At the end of the day, mental aptitude is what makes a fighter… and I don’t just mean the will to win. It takes something a little perculiar to step into a ring/octagon knowing that the guy facing you KNOWS how to hurt people, and is about to unleash that on you.

2) brute strength is great, but a guy who is less powerful yet quicker will usually do better, given equal mental aptitudes.

I honestly don’t know if ANY of our Jags players have the mental stuff necessary to be a good fighter, or if they don’t. It’s something you cannot predict until you see them fight :) So, assuming that they are all equal in this respect… I’d pick someone with strength and endurance, and with quick feet. Mercedes Lewis would be too slow on his feet. Rashad Jennings or Brian Iwuh or Montell Owens would be the right combination dize/strength/speed.

Dammit, I want the football season to start already :(

So You're Saying...

MJD would be sick at MMA?

Possibly

He has the strength and drive, no doubt about it. His strong hips would do him very well if he was a guy who liked fighting on the ground, cause takedowns would be easy for him. If he preferred standing up and striking.. well, his height would work against him and his strength would count for nothing.

… the other side of the coin, which is not mentioned often, is the mindset required to hurt other people. And i’m not talking “I blocked the hell out of that guy” stuff. Believe it or not, it’s not an easy mindset to have.. and most people who actually are prepared to hurt others, can’t stand being hurt themselves. I can’t even begin to tell you how many bullies we had who stopped the sport within a week or 2 once that realized that pain is a 2 way street.

Personally, I saw MMA as a test of skills… with the un-intended consequence of people being hurt. I don’t like hurting people, and I don’t like being hurt. I DID have the mindset required, though…. test your skills, no matter what, and dont give up!

I totally agree

with everything you said about fighting. And I agree about the mindset. I know I let up on a couple of people I was dominating, just to bite me in the ass after they recover.

Word...

I wrestle as well as play football for my HS. And I totally agree about somebody’s size not really determining their ability. Last season I was in the eight grade, so I still wrestled middle school. In the dual meets, just between our school and another, I almost always wrestled up at least ten pounds. Even though the guys were 10-15 pounds heavier, I had a 9-1 record. But then at the final tournament, with about 14 schools, the weight restrictions were dead on, and I lost five pounds so I could move down a class. In the tournament I had a losing record of 1-2. The guys who weighed the exact same as I did were tougher because they came from better wrestling backgrounds, while the guys 10-15 pounds looked intimidating, but weren’t all that much of a challenge out on the mat.

Yeah man.

I weighed in around 225, but due to our roster, I wrestled heavyweight. The weight limit for heavy weight is 275. However, I was much quicker than most heavyweights, and had no problems out maneuvering them. It doesn’t matter how strong someone is, if you take advantage of weaknesses in the human body, they can’t over power you. One of my favorites was cradling guys who have to cut weight to make 275.

by Kbot on Jul 1, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh Man

Reverse cradles are my favorite move. The head and arm is up there, but it really is kind of cheap if thats the only move guys throw. None the less, it got me out of some sticky situations last season.

I had a guy pinned with a cradle in the final tournament, but the ref must’ve been high or something because he just flat out didn’t call it. If I had won that one, I could’ve had a shot at the 1st/2nd match. But instead I came in fourth. One dude on our team won first in his class though, so that was pretty sweet.

Agree

Yeah deff. agree with that. Size might help to an extent but only if the right head is on the shoulders. Bob Sapp is a chump and he’s the biggest freak of them all.

LOL

Someone said MJD hed get destroyed at the Light Heavyweight range…205 pounds….My god it would be bad…especially the people he would have to face…LOL IMO I dont see anyone on the Jags that has the killer instinct for MMA…As for the bigger guys…Theys be destroyed by the heavyweights in MMA….Fedor, Mir, Lesnar…I honestly off the top of my head can think of anyone that has been on the Jags to be an MMA fighter…MAybe Donovan but he was a big time christian….So I think that would cause him a conflict of interest in MMA….Not to mention his weight…IM thinkin middle or welter hed get destoyed by the top guys!!!

by kingsmasher on Jul 6, 2009 12:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

so let me get this straight

Christians cannot fight MMA due to what now? I am not taking sides, I just want to understand your point.

When you say Donovan, do you refer to Donovan Darius, former SS?
