Jaguars Sign Jarrett Dillard

In case you're wondering... He caught it...
The Jacksonville Jaguars are continuing their quest to get all their picks under contract prior to Training Camp. Today they inked Jarrett Dillard to a contract, which was finalized this afternoon. Dillard represents the youth and possibility of the Jaguars' WR corps, and much is expected of the rookie wide-outs that were picked. Dillard is seen as a good route runner who can develop into a solid possession receiver. He lacks the deep speed some of his fellow draft selections have, but the coaching staff has high hopes for the 5th round pick.
Dillard is the third pass catcher to sign, with Mike Thomas and Zach Miller being the other two draftees already under contract. The Jaguars still have six picks to get under contract before August 2nd, the opening date of training camp.
The remaining unsigned draftees:
Terrence Knighton
UPDATE: PFT reports that Dillard's four-year deal includes a $192,300 signing bonus as well as a fourth-year escalator clause worth $1.308 million, according to a league source. The total maximum value of the deal is $2.685 million.

Why don't the Jags ever just come out and say what the contract was?
It’s going to get leaked either way

Ask Vic
That would be a good Vic question.

The Jags as a rule ...
… don’t post what they pay their people, the agents do. Then once it is “leaked” then Vic will report it. It’s just the way the Jags do business. Vic has been asked about this several times before.
I really like Dillard
In the OTA routes they ran, he was the closest to Tory Holt in snapping out of his breaks. Tory has still better.
Collin, nice to see you publish something. As always, well written.

Good news
I just wonder when they gonna sign:
A; the two 7th rounder?
B; Cox and Britton
And C; the most important : Monroe?

Hello Zoltan - Britton is close
He was # 39 on the draft list and New England just signed #40 and #41. The deals are somewhere like this:
- New England Darius Butler – CB 4 year $4.125 million contract, $2.0675 million guaranteed
New England will sign all of their top three draft picks for half the guaranteed money Monroe will make.
The market at #8 may take awhile to develop because of the inflated QB contacts at #1 and #5. #5 Mark Sanchez got $28mil guaranteed.

Do you think Terry
that the Jags sign their 2nd rounder ahead of the 7th rounder? It would surprise me. Although, Butler’s contract will be the compass to Britton’s contract.

Ha - That might be true!
think Monroe and Britton know that a hold out is not in their interest. Both want playing time and there is no implied starting role for either.
The contract for Britton is pretty much a lock right now. The difference in negotiations for guaranteed money would be maybe $200,000, After agent fee and taxes, maybe he sees $100,000. Worth risking a holdout? Won’t be in his mind. Playing time incentives are what he wants to earn.
Monroe at #8 is in a tough spot. The inflection point in salaries used to be after the top 5. Top 5 got big money, 6 starts the rapid decline back to earth. The agents want to lower that high point. Last year the stupid Jets and Saints lowered to #7 which is why Harvey held out. The Jets and Saints way overpaid for what they got. Even the Jaguars weren’t happy over $17 mil in guarantees.
So will that same game play out this year? Sachez at #5 got $26mil guaranteed. Will Monroe hold out for $20mil over $17.5mil? Well that is a much different reward scenerio that Britton. I know he doesn’t want to hold out, so I think the Jaguars will get their price. After all, how much will Harvey lose if Gene cuts him after this year? A lot!
So we shall see, but I expect Britton to sign soon. Faster than the 7th rounder? I am betting – Yes!

Great Question
A lot of it comes from just being old and watching things play out over the years.
As for Britton’s situation, I look at the contract numbes for people in his draft range and they are fairly bunched up, not much seperation.
As for Monroe and the #8 spot, I followed the Harvey situation very close last year and picked up on the agent plan to move the top money inflection point.
I guess the true measure is to watch and see if what I write plays out. If it does, incorporate it into your knowledge. If it doesn’t, write me off as all hot air. I am not always right, but do try to be reasonably close.

Actually, didn't Sanchez get a less than "Market" contract in exchange for signing a shorter deal?

Sanchez got a QB deal, which is higher than any other positions money.
So it scews everything since his number 5 contract will likely still be higher in value, or close to even, as AAron Curry, the number 4 overall pick. We’ll see. The deals may not be comparable.

I know QBs get paid more, but he still took less guaranteed money for a shorter contract

But, of course, the refs in Austin ...
… did not see any pass interference infractions on that play.
