Vick to JAX?
If you have not already heard, Mike Vick has been reinstated by 'The Commish' The NFL network was all over this today and had quite a discussion about this. One of the questions asked of Jamie Dukes and Michale Lombardi were which teams would have an interest in Vick. Several were listed, Cinn, NE, Rams, San Fran, and Jacksonville. When pressed to pick one team that Vick will end up with, Dukes said San Fran and Lombardi said Jags. Lombardi like Jags due to the back up QB situation, the small market environment, and the need to win. So, what say you?

Hello - Gene Smith - Remember?
Vick is better suited in Detroit.
If a can of beer on the golf course gets you booted off the team, dog fighting is way out of bounds.

Hey, easy on the Lions. I think you mean the Bengals.
We may have crappy players, but they are generally pretty upstanding citizens.
FYI, In my opinion, Vick will not get a look from Detroit. We don’t need the circus and attention that would go with him. Frankly, any franchise that picks him up to sell tickets or otherwise hype their fan base deserves all the grief they will get.

Vic is right for Detroit
because you don’’t have an offensive line. Vic can run for his life.
No offense intended toward our newest friend from the north.

Don't believe the myth that mobile QBs have less sacks.
In Vick’s four full years of play he had 2002 33 sacks in 15 games, 2004 46 sacks in 15 games, 2005 33 sacks in 15 games, and 2006 46 sacks in 16 games. Matt Cassel was sacked 47 times last year in New England who supposedly have an awesome offensive line. Daunte Culpepper in 2005, before his knee was blown out, was on pace to be sacked 80 times. His replacement, the elusive Brad Johnson [LOL], was sacked at a rate equivalent to half of Daunte’s. David Carr was always a pretty quick and mobile guy. Did not do him much good at Texas.
Our offensive line is a better pass blocking unit than their stats. Kitna and Culpepper held onto the ball way too long. Orlovsky, yeah the guy who ran out the end zone, was sacked at a rate less than half of the other two clowns. If he had been our QB all year we projected out to 28 sacks for the season. Pretty much an average number for the NFL. Our line is not a good run blocking unit.
Horrible in fact.
Thanks for your explanation Tkopa, I just wasn’t sure where you were coming from.
I love the fact that you hang out here.

I am not kidding when I say the discussions here are very good.
My AFC team used to be the Patriots. I cheered for them when they had Steve Grogan, Stanley Morgan, Ray Clayborn, Craig James, Tony Collins, and John Hannah among others. A very underrated team back in the 80s. I was a big Tom Brady fan from his days playing for Michigan, so I kept my eye on the Pats when they drafted him. I always thought he was very underrated as a QB. However, I don’t care for Belichick or his antics and find it very hard to cheer for a team that is at the top or always picked to be there. I admire their excellence but I tend to cheer for the underdog.
I like the way the Jaguars play the game, physical with a heavy dose of rushing and defence. You also picked one of my favourite players in the 2009 draft, Eugene Monroe. So I’ll be adopting the Jags as my AFC team for 2009 and beyond.

Nice to see
where you’re coming from. I’m under dog fan too. I guess that’s a good thing at this point in our teams road to winning again. haha
calvin johnson
is one of my favorite players so i have a small soft spot for Detroit
i’ll pay more attention this year so we can talk

My fav NFC team is Philly
I used to always get Westbrooke and Mcnabb in Fantasy Football and i love Philly Cheesesteaks.
Of course fav AFC team are the Jaguars.

I Say San Fran would be the best place for Vick
They arent going to lose anything in terms of fans and they need some cash and all.

Hey!
I WANT MIKE VICK ON MY TEAM! listen, collin and all you others, you hate mike vick. i get it. he has done some of the dumbest shi* anyone could think of, he has messed up, bleh bleh bleh. Now here this side!
Mike vick has gone to prison for two years, had so much bad national media attention(deserved), and i gurantee thought about how bad he was as a person. he may have contemplated suicide? i mean, the guy has been through the toughest time anyone could go through! BUT, what do we as jacksonville and vick have to lose??? Vick, there is no denying, is one of the most gifted NFL players BY FAR! god created him with unbelievable athletic ability and to be able to get him for a bargain at Veteran minimum is absolutely ubsurd! sign him right now! I know we are all about character issues here in JAX, but i firmly believe that with all the thinking time he has had in hardtime, he is a changed man and he regrets his previous mistakes. Vick can only only go up, and has SO MUCH to prove, i think he would give us his complete all and we dont have a legit backup right now anyways! Please, a bargain for an extremely gifted NFL player? what do we have to lose? we dont sell tickets anyway.
by harveyismyboy on Jul 31, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Can he only go up?
Because last I heard the older you get the less valuable you are. Look I don’t mind Vick’s past transgressions and I think most NFL teams at the end of the day don’t really care either, but how in your right mind can you not once mention that the guy hasn’t played in more then two years? You want some legit reasons not to sign him? How about that hes a quarterback who completed well under 60% of his passes his final year of playing in 2006? I’m pretty sure he isn’t allowed to practice routes with inmates so I doubt that he can magically become average in the accuracy department. He might be a decent option for the wildcat, if only we ran that at all. The closest thing we had to that was have Matt Jones take a few snaps a year from the shotgun and that isn’t going to be happening this season I can assure you.
Could Jacksonville use a good backup quarterback? Yes. Do they need a high profile backup? No. If he signs in Jacksonville there will be no end to the clamoring and pushing to get Vick in the game. I would be willing to bet that Bouman is a much better option for us at this point but that won’t matter to anyone because we have Mike Vick and like it or not a lot of people will be pushing for him to start ahead of Garrard right away. This team doesn’t need a stupid distraction like that from a guy who I don’t think was ever really that good and who I have little doubt will ever be a consistent threat ever again. You aren’t getting the 2004 Vick man, your getting the 2009 Vick who hasn’t played in two years.
What if he isn’t even fast anymore? Think about it.
hes a backup you fool, he doesnt have to be perfect

A backup that will be called to play every weekend
thats the point. Theres going to be a controversy where there shouldnt be. You don’t think every media outlet will feed the fans with the “when will Michael Vick play” questions? A rebuilding team doesn’t need garbage like that, it could destroy it. I’m not interested in watching a potential trainwreck and I think that the potential for a trainwreck goes way up for any team that signs Vick.
No one is perfect, but frankly Vick isn’t even very good. At least not to a team that won’t use his skill set in the exact right situations or dedicate their entire offense to him. I’ll take Bouman over a guy who I have no certainty will be even close to as good as he was, which I have stated before I never thought was all that great. I hope for his sake he proves me wrong, but I won’t regret it if its with another team.
I don't care what he did man, I just don't think hes very good
did I not make that clear enough in the four paragraphs I wrote?

to calling people names, such as “bitch haters”, “fool” or some other classy terminology. I don’t think he / she is capable of having civil discourse with people, much less with those who don’t share his / her viewpoints. So open discussion and FUN debate are not possible with this person. Fortunately, he / she is the exception and not the rule for most on this site.
Its all good
I can be stubborn sometimes with some stuff and I used to be the same way when debating. We’re all Jag fans here, so at the end of the day its merely a disagreement.
If Vick is sincere in his apology and commitment, I think Gene would give him a shot
The thing that would worry me is dealing with the PETArds

concur
No chance. Can’t rebuild a team with higher character players and then get Vick. Not worth it. Not even for a veteran minimum for a guy who hasn’t played in two years.
Sean Jax Beach Bum
But
He’s not a “low character” guy. He paid his dues, now its time for the guy to be able to play again.

Um, no
Hi, new to these parts been reading the site for awhile but I just had to reply, he IS a low character guy. Lets see, Ron Mexico that was settled out of court so it was probably true. He flipped off his OWN fans after a loss to the Saints in 06 and he was caught trying to board a plane with a water bottle with a hidden compartment, ok there was nothing in the compartment but how naive do you have to beleive that he wasn’t stashing “stuff” in it. Oh wait he also was caught holding a betting ring which is a no-no in the NFL and lied to Commish Goodell face. How is this kind of actions not considered low character?
plus the whole electrocuting dogs things...
He would be a disaster signing…
Welcome to the site wolf, hope to see you around more!
The End Is Nigh... www.infowars.com
This is all true and...
the guy has never apologized for any of it. Yes… he just apologized to Goodell for lying to him, and gave that crap about it being a priveledge to play in the NFL, but the guy will always be ‘that guy’ thinking about bucking the system and how not to get caught doing it. He is incapable of distinguishing right from wrong and the reasons for it being right and wrong, that is scarry. No moral compass at all. I gotta believe this is a family upbringing issue. I just hope he doesn’t blow the same smoke up Dungee’s ass and end up embarrassing the guy.
It is what it is.
We all have personal opinions on the mater some of us hate him and some of us are willing to overlook a long and troubled history. I agree with your assesment on the whole thing I think he will do something stupid and thug like in the future and be kicked out agian and we will all be saying doesn’t he deserve another chance in the next couple of years.
looking at the extreme of the “not a low character guy”… let’s say a player committed manslaughter or a lesser murder charge, spent time in prison, then wants to be on your team… is he in? not being argumentative, just curious on your opinion…
Sean Jax Beach Bum
How was he before the charges? Did he display character issues before hand? What was the situation on the manslaughter charges? If it was a DUI like Stallworth he can find the door if it was a rainy night and he lost control hitting a pedestriant for say speeding then yeah I would give him a shot.
Yeah
I’d say so. Take someone like Donte Stallworth. Accidently hit an old man and killed him. I’m not sure what Stallworths situation is about being able to get back into the league, but I know he has like 2 years of house arrest. If he is let back into the league, that is if he wants to play again, I don’t think he would be a risk for a team to pick up. The Jaguars won’t need him, because this group of receivers is money, but some team might take a flier on him.
I think it really depends on the situation. Controversial players need somewhere to go. You don’t want to take a proven murderer on your team, but players who have messed up once are sometimes worth the risk. Not always though, like I said for me, if I was a GM on some team, I would look at the situation first, then make my decision.
Ray Lewis is believed by many to have been an accessory to first degree murder. Baltimore kept him, and the next year he was the Super Bowl MVP.

everyone
Mercy always triumphs over judgement. There are people who are playing in the NFL with worse sins then this. He is showing that he is trying to turn it around and be a good character guy. Everyone deserves a second chance. Sign him to a one year deal. if he acts up cut him

Exactly
I think the guy is trying to turn his life around. He’ll be cheap, can’t be more than the veteran minimum. If he screws up again, show him the door.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.
-Akrobatik
I'm with you on this.
He’s never been a malcontent, and from what I’ve read, he seems to be a fine teammate. I also agree on the whole PETA nonsense, and that is the top concern if Vick is picked up by the Jags. However, I still question how well he would fit in the Jaguars’ offensive schemes.
I'm For It
Bring him in. Would be a great backup instead of Todd Bouman, and could offer some versatility all over the offense. I’ve even heard he can punt.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.
-Akrobatik
My feeling
I don’t want him on the team and I don’t think he will be, but……I think the team could benefit from him in a number of ways. He could helps us win, first and foremost. He could provide depth at the QB position. He can help ticket sales. (Vic said it himself, that Vick was one of only like 3 players that single handily brought up ticket sales with his play. I don’t remember who the other players were.) He could make the team a little more exciting.(for some anyhow.)
i voted
and i’m surprised by the results. to know the future of your team, know your GM
LateRoundPick.com
welll
my oppinion he can help us by being a good bck up for gararrd ummm hellooo our backup is todd bouman omg why not vick? what if garrard doesnt show up (which i dont think will happen) then vick is waiting for his chance to shine not to mention he would pressure garrard to play at his 100% …. i say we get vick while he’s cheap and you never know maybe in a few years you trade him for something good hmm?
Here's the irony, IMO.
When we had Cleo Lemon on the roster as a primary backup no one said anything about not having good depth. Even though Bouman outperformed him last year and this year, people are more worried about our depth than before. It’s funny how perception changes things.
Depth at QB
I think we have all been alittle conerned this year and last year about the depth at QB. We don’t have anyone waiting to take over the reigns when his time comes and that is what this team needs to be comfortable.
I Hear What Your Saying
A lot of people, including myself, are worried about this teams depth at quarterback. Last year, your right, everyone seemed fine with Cleo. Though I wasn’t. Cleo didn’t do well at all during pre-season, and really seemed afraid to go down the field when throwing over the middle. Bouman definitely outperformed him. If Bouman does well this preseason, my nerves will be eased. But even then, you have to admit we would probably have to run 45 times a game if Garrard goes down.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.
-Akrobatik
holy crap. NO one has seen him in any sort of camp atmosphere… so who the hell knows if he still even has it?…
Sean Jax Beach Bum
Another one of these eh?
I’m not exactly enthused about signing a guy who I have always thought was very average at playing quarterback who hasn’t played for two years, that is unless my tax dollars have been paying for high tech athletic facilities in prison.
i'm all for it...
but man he’s pretty polarizing huh?
random thoughts…
1. provides viable backup qb, maybe eventually used the way percy harvin will be used in minn…youre saying you would rather put the team in the hands of a guy that has been bounced from 6 teams or a guy that went into green bay in january and won??
2. can sign him for nothing…and if he’s not the guy that that he used to be…dump him
3. you think 53 guys that will make this squad are better than vick?
4. jacksonville isn’t exactly the most liberal, peta friendly place in the world
5. national press is national press….im not so sure it would be necessarily all positve…but as negative as TO has been, it has made buffalo interesting…5K people showed up to watch training camp
6. pushes garrard to be a better player
7. i truly think the man has served his time and realizes the severity of the situation
8. how can a team lose sponsors when we don’t have any!! (JK)
i just feel like the upside to this is much higher than the risk factors
Right There
That right there sums up how I feel. Well said bro. There is a lot of upside that could come out of this, and if he doesn’t play/act as expected, show him the door. But its worth taking a risk.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.

Even if he's paid his debt to society and even if I think there's a role for him on this team
It’ll never happen with Gene as GM. The end.

unless the Tony Dungy as a mentor thing becomes as dominant a factor in his life as it needs to be
that, in itself, could change the entire scenario. I have a feeling Dungy is more excited about mentoring Vick than if he had returned.
On another note, we need a stable, no-what-you-got environment.
Everyone seems to preach NE these days. We need that. We need that team that is going to be stable in the locker room and on the field no matter who we bring in. We do not have that. Let’s just wait and watch.
LateRoundPick.com
Good luck sneaking him past Gene...
We’ve exasperated this subject to no end. Vick has done his time. Vick was and could still be a dynamo on the field. He’ll get his second chance. That “re-do” will not happen in Jacksonville. You can hope as mightily as your hearts can muster, but it won’t pass a fart. If wishes were horses we’d all ride. Redskins.
Vox Veritas Vita...
I saw that too... If Del Rio still had a say in player personnel, then I would take that at face value...
Having said that, I don’t see Gene signing someone who has a history like VIck’s.
The End Is Nigh... www.infowars.com
The Jaguars need all the fans they can get
and somehow i don’t see the negative press that comes with Vick help them with that problem.
Locker room
I think you would also cause some concern in the locker room as well as in the press. If the Jags take Vick suddenly everything Gene Smith preached in the off season willbe questioned. No I doubt the jags have anything to do with Vick though I think they may look for QB help when the rosters are cut down maybe bring in a younger QB they can groom, or we could all be suprised and Bouman could perform well in preseason.
