Quentin, coach wants to see you and bring your playbook.

Quentin Groves got a taste of Pro-Bowl Left Tackle Tra Thomas. As you can see, he didn't fare too well. To be fair, I think Mr. Groves is a good talent, but he isn't an edge rusher.

Maybe a little harsh...

to judge a second year player against a very good veteran on one play in training camp. I disagree, I think Groves will be a good pass rusher with more experience.

Quentin Groves is on the verge of being let go

It isn’t my opinion based on one sequence at camp. This word has been quietly put out there by the coaches to the media.

I don’t mean to be disagreeable, but this isn’t grade school where people are judged by what grade they are in. As JDR stated last year end of season, it is a produce or perish lifestyle. Quentin Groves better find his way into the backfield real quick or the cold hand of Gene Smith will reach out from under the robe.

You may be right....

I’ve read enough of your posts to know you are knowledgable and well informed. I just can’t see them letting go so soon.

any links to point us to where we can read about the word put out there by the coaches? i’m curious to see what they’ve had to say. I probably missed it somewhere along the line… thanks!

Two places:

This is from OGN’s comment post of the game scrimmage afrer listening to it on the radio:

I live in Raleigh, so I listened via interent – so here are some observations of the broadcast Broadcasters were Sexton, Lageman, and Vic

1) Vic was having a cow over the QB situation – he definately doesn’t like it. He feels that Garrard may be getting sloppy and is concerned that there is nobody in camp to even push him for his job. He went nuts over the horrible pass / int by Garrard.

2) Lageman – Heyward is far and away the best DE and that Groves may get a visit form the Turk if he doesn’t improve dramatically.

This is from Vic’s column on Jaguars.com

Would it help Groves’ Twitter totals if he got some sacks?

"Low blow," Groves said. "Yeah, it’s a popularity thing. Once the sacks come, I’ll get some more followers, but I’m happy with my 1,400."

Groves had a mere 2.5 sacks last season as a rookie. He expects that number to improve dramatically this season, based on having a year of experience under his belt and also from having gained 11 pounds of muscle.

"It’s not to look pretty or look big. I’m trying to deliver a blow and finish," he said.

The Jaguars traded draft picks to move up and select Groves in the second round of the 2008 draft, after having done the same thing to move up and select Derrick Harvey in the first round. Immediately, Groves and Harvey were designated the Jaguars’ pass-rush of the future.

It was hoped Groves and Harvey would step into their futures last season, but it was understandable that they didn’t. A year later, the expectations have become demands: They must sack the quarterback.

I don’t think he is going anywhere this year, but the heat of hell is upon him, that I am sure of.

yep

I heard that same thing on the radio listening during the scrimmage. It got me to thinking, would they really let him go this soon? But when you look at guys like James Wyche and Jeremy Mincey who even Wayne Weaver talked about in his interview, you start to think that Groves is the 5th DE on the depth chart.

How many DE’s do the Jags carry, and how much do they like Julius Williams the rookie? Possibly more than Groves?

by jimbrophoto on Aug 11, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Julius WIlliams

isn’t nearly the player that Groves is. I guarantee anyone that. Julius is a very good steady guy. He’s not play maker like Groves can be.

good stuff… but what coaches have fed this information to the media?… i guess that’s what i was really curious about.

My Guess? JDR wispers and takes care of the print guys

One of his defense strategies is to feed the press so they don’t feed on him.

I don't think he's a RE anyways at best a LE

It may pan out that he becomes our experimental 3-4 linebacker.

ya gotta give somebody two years, right?

by Surteal on Aug 10, 2009 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

Right

But that second year is the real test.

I am not sure how to say this, but this is a different Jaguars team. That 5-11 season hurt bad. They are not going back there again and Gene will leave bodies along the side of the road to get there. This team is fighting for their lives and the players must understand that. Tweet up some sacks Quentin or turn in your playbook.

i completely agree abou the season

and now that i see you want him to have this year, i agree about Groves

look at that DT the Titans got in the second last year, maybe third

he’s proven worth. It’s all about value, I hope Groves proves it

On another note, someone on here put up a stat about QB pressures and Groves was top 5 in the league i believe

anybody have that info?

Judge not

Quentin is in a second year guy. Tra made his living the last 16 seasons putting DE’s on their backsides (good ones such as Mike Strahan). He is going to learn a lot from going against Tra. but in support TK Quentin is not a good RE. Harvey or hayword needs to be in the RE postion. and he needs to be on the left side or find a way translate into a rushing linebacker Lets give the man one more season and see what happen

by jesusjagfan2009 on Aug 11, 2009 1:18 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Thomas is a beast, a damn fine LT. There are a ton of DEs who would be “let go” if getting whipped by him in training camp were the criteria. I still think Groves is going to have a productive year, if only because the coaches are going to try plays/schemes that actually suit his strengths instead of trying to see if he can play as if he is 30 pounds heavier.

by KeithG on Aug 11, 2009 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Not good DE, good OLB... maybe

I look’s like 3-4 OLB more than , 4-3 DE, and that is it. Some guy’s have some guy’s don’t . We wanted Freeney, but got …. well Groves….

Can’t judge by one play

O-line is about consistency, d-line is hustle & opportunity.. On defense you wait and wait until your play(s) come along.

A lot of things have to go your way on defense. Where is the play going, who is the HB blocking, pass or run etc, etc.. So, as I said, you play every down hard, trying to setup the o-line for that speed rush to the outside/inside and wait for the right play to come along.

So to judge d-line you need more than a couple of plays.

You not say Merriman is a bad player because MJD put him on his back, do you?

Very good post Tkopa

Good to see this individual battles in camp. Below is the link to Groves’ scouting report when he came out of college. Link: http://warroomreport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=125&Itemid=61

I looked at a few other reports and they were similar. Hopefully he picks it up and learns from these sessions.

Thanks

After watching Quentin Groves all last year, I saw his lack of strength get him neutralized on every play. He bulked up a bit this year, but he is not looking sharp in practice.

I think Quentin Groves is on the bubble.

I agree with you, but that’s unfortunate. He’s a character guy that worked his butt off to get better. Unfortunately it’s going to show up on the field.

by moufpuncha on Aug 11, 2009 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I love Quentin Groves

and would be sorry to see him go. He is great with the crowd and very personable.

He needs to find his way into the backfield. The photos I have of Derrick Harvey show a much more aggressive player pushing Tra Thomas back.

BTW… thanks for joining the posting and commenting. Hope to keep hearing from you.

well it now seems appearent those

off-side penalties from last year were caused from his lack of strength and size to penetrate the backfield. Was it a bad pick? Does he have no seat on this bus? He seems to be the right guy on the bus.

If it were me - I'd keep Groves and find a place for him - I just don't know where

But I don’t think he has much time to show his value. The bus is moving, I don’t know if he is on it or not.

If he isnt working out as a DE

then why dont they switch him to OLB? If a QB can become a TE then it shouldnt be a problem for Groves. I know they drafted him as a DE but if it aint fittin dont force it. He is still a physical talent and I would hate to see the Jags drop a guy like Groves so quickly. Maybe they feel that the investment they made requires them to be a little more patient so they keep him at DE. Personally I like him and I want them to find the best place for him to be.

by JagSoldier on Aug 11, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah... He's a tweener...

Gene did make mention of Knighton’s base ability and the possibility of a gap noseguard. Sounds like a defensive scheme may arise to highlight Groves talent, but an every downs 4-3 defensive end may be a reach. Big defensive ends are rare so he has that in his favor.

by Jaghomer on Aug 12, 2009 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions

In Fairness to Groves....

I just saw footage on the local news where Groves drove right through Thomas and reached the tackle dummy representing the QB. Also, Lagemans comments have no effect on my opinion, I liked him better as a player than analyst.

by Jaggernaut on Aug 11, 2009 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

Hold on to your belief in him and don't let me or any one else change your mind

You might be right. Believe it. Watch the pre-season games and watch him and form your own impression. Being right sometimes means being alone.

I hope you are right. if so, we will have a wonderful year.
