No need to panic.
Let’s first define the intent of the preseason, much less game 1 of the preseason, before we continue on with season long generalizations. Take a step back and evaluate the players not the scoreboard. Ask yourself, what were the coaches trying to accomplish.

You're right.
What set me off about the game more than anything else was the penalties. I understand making mistakes, but back to back to back false starts, that’s just too much to take.

Agreed
Penalties raised serious concerns. I like what the receivers showed me. Need to see DG with the Mike’s and Holt. Wanted Lewis to make some plays. I’ll be watching to see how the line progresses and how often Eben and Monroe get rotated into the starting group. I really can’t get worked up about a whole lot on the defensive side of the ball since their determining what type of schemes they’ll be running. I only hope they decide earlier rather than later :)

Penalties Happen
What you really don’t want to see is for those penalties continue through the playoffs. It was the first game for many of those guys.
Don't Panic Yet
Since I live out in BFE West Texas and have cable I unfortunately did not see the game. That being said it’s week one of the preseason. These are the answers I’m looking for in week one, and it sounds like though the product was very rough the players managed some of this:
1. Was the o-line controlling the line of scrimmage and being physical: it seems they were physical but had some problems gelling. Remember Vinny and Mo have not played a “real” game in a while; give them some time to settle down.
2. Did the receivers get any separation?
3a. Did the d-line hold up, or were they consistently knocked off the line of scrimmage?
3b. Did they pressure the QB at all, or was it a replay of 2007 Divisional playoff against the Tom Brady?
Penalties, mental lapses, etc… are to be expected right now. This is a young rebuilding team. Mistakes are going to be made. Even early in the year I could see the Jags being 1-3 or 0-4. What I want from this year is for the team to overachieve, and finish the 2nd half strong so they carry momentum into 2010. If they end up going 9-7 or better then I will be the happiest guy out there, but as long as there is improvement week to week then I view it as a positive start.
Ignore the hype; look at the results.
Yes Panic! CBS47 IS T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E
How do you blackout an away game. Several times there was no video and their HD broadcast is horrible. How are we suppose to watch the game if CBS 47 can’t handle video feeds.
I remember while I was in Tallahassee one year the game blacked out for nearly three quarters.
They SUCK!
CBS47
was as Charles Barkley say… “Hurrible…”. They must payroll problems, bc I’m thinking they got interns broadcasting these games. Not only do we gotta worry about our home games being blacked out… now away games too?!? Maybe it’s a tatctic to get us to buy more tickets…

You are not alone
MY 65 WRBW-TV Orlando sucked too! The intro was choppy and flickered, then once they fixed that the sound went out. Local broadcasting SUCKS!!!

but
being on the west coast i had to listen to the miami commentators on the nfl network replay…these guys were a DISASTER!
They must've been pretty bad...
because the highlights on NFL.com were using Brian Sexton’s commentary instead. lol

It really was horrible. One of the guys had no idea what he was talking about
and they both or all 3, however many of them there were, were just in no way, shape, or form in any sort of fashion speaking from on an objective level.
During the Jags commentary...
with Burmeister & Boselli, they caught Boselli say “I love me some Cox” lol They kept replaying it on his morning radio show.

I know, right?
It seemed like every Jags game last season, the picture went out. It’s crazy. CBS needs to straighten up on these games.

We can only get beter, right?
Guess this was just to see how it looks/works , we’ll get better, and better from game to game….
I hope so
I didnt like the play we got from our gaurds. Too much pressure on Garrard came from the middle of the line. I couldnt grade DG performance because it looked to me that he was under pressure way too much. His pass to Holt was sweet but everything else looked rushed because of the pressure. Also the gaurds werent making holes for the RB’s. That needs fixed but like harperslaw said, Mo and Vince have been out for awhile now. On a positive note, Constidine looked great and the D-line did an above average job which is good for the first preseason game. Brian Williams stunk it up. I didnt expect that from a vet like him. The new WR’s looked pretty good to me, especially Troy. It was nice seeing guys get a few yards after the catch for once even if it wasnt for much. New TE Miller looked great to me. He is going to be a huge addition to the team. I like his energy. Patience is required here so that is what I will be. Come Saturday though I want to see better play calling and the O-Line looking the Great Wall of China.
There was definitely a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks throughout the game. We can only hope that, like Garrard said, it was just poor communications and blitz pickup and not guys actually getting beat. I would have liked to see a little more from the lines up front (especially when the TV guys said that the Dolphins practices have been “no tackling”). Speaking of which, the Jaguars couldn’t tackle anyone. Even the “tackles” they made were just pushes and hope that the guy falls down afterward. Miller was outstanding, especially on special teams coverage. He’ll make the team based on his coverage skills at least.
I know we are already short on draft picks
for next year, but I think we need to offer a low draft pick for Josh Johnson. He looks like he could develop into a good QB. If you think Pat White looked good, Johnson looked better and even faster in his preseason game.
Yeah, I agree with you on Johnson, I wouldn’t mind picking him up. We at least need someone better that Paul Smith to battle Bouman for the backup job, Smith’s arm looked weak as hell last night.
I wanted to see that kid from Ohio State work with the Jaguars
Kid was on the squad less than a week before they let him go… was he that much worse than Paul Smith? JP Losman still available I think… I would’ve picked him up before Bouman. I think they front office’s basis for a backup QB is basically one that is bad enough to not outshine Garrard in order to avoid another QB controversy in town… and if that’s the case, I really think that’s really poor personnel management. My theory is down to that one or they are deliberately trying to handicap the team for drafting reasons… Tebow Conspiracy?!?! LOL I really hope it’s not the 2nd one… but don’t you think it’s a little weird we didn’t pursue any of the better QBs out there?
In the face of adversity, what you do from then on dictates who you really are...
Wait till cuts
There is some promising young QBs that will probably get cut that have some NFL experince. Wait till the roster cutdowns lets not waist draftpicks we already lost #2 on Cox.
Here's another few QB's
we should look at. Drew Olson and Willie Tuitama. Has anyone seen them play?
Too early to panic
It was the 1st preseason game i.e. a glorified practise against a different opposition. Yes, there were/are some serious issues to be fixed. But, there were plenty of positives too… or at least I thought so. Some of the rookies had really good showings, Williamson looked good… and I liked what I saw form both Harvey and Groves in the brief time they were on the field.
My biggest concern is Garrard. I might be overreacting a bit, but I really do hope last night’s (very brief) showing from David isn’t a sign of things to come. His o-line did not perform very well, that’s true. But, he also held on too long and seemed to decide where he was going to pass (short little dump-offs mostly) before the ball was snapped.
I guess last night just showed us how much a “work in progress” this team really is.
It's just the 1st preseason game, D is better, O will come
It’s never sharp, crisp football in the preseason, whether you were 0-16 last year or won the Super Bowl. They haven’t played since December & we’re a team full of new rookies, free agents, and guys coming back from injury, many of which didn’t even play in the game.
And the important guys only played a series or two. The guys making all the mistakes & missing all the tackles won’t smell the field when the real action starts.
No need to be overly critical at this point. Preseason is glorified practice, an opportunity to look at the guys who are competing for roster spots. Despite the penalties and missed tackles, the defense looks 10X better than last year.
Personally I’m relieved we finally have some guys who can get open AND catch the ball – Holt, Dillard, Miller, even Troy-Dub (finally). Garrard just need these guys to learn to be consistent so he can feel comfortable throwing them the ball. Like the interception Bouman threw, it wasn’t his fault to me, he gave Underwood a chance to make a play but he didn’t even fight to break up the catch or prevent the interception. Garrard won’t gamble on guys he doesn’t trust.
Remember last year, at least we’re not stuck watching our old “playmakers” Reggie Williams & Matt Jones.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But soon or late the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can.
Why panic?
The Jaguars are still number one in my book. I had someone ask me why I was wearing my Jags’ cap today. Why? Because they’re awesome, and I love the team. So we lost. It hurts, but “hurts” doesn’t make me cry like a little girl. You know what else little girls do? Panic.
Vae Victis!
Agreed......
Agreed. Chicks panic. Dudes suck it up and fix the problems. Last year sucked when everyone got hurt the first week but Jack sucked it up and went after the problem. He searched high and low for every fat boy in town that can play line. None of ’em could so he drafted what he could.
I’ll give ’em a few more games before I put down the hammer.

Hahahaha.
What?! Hilarious. Girls being emotional, irrational, and prone to panic is timeless. 50’s, 60’s or 3012. It’s not a bad thing, it’s a gender thing. It’s endearing really. It’s funny and sweet. I love my wife. But she screams if i walk into a room unannounced. She’s jumpy. It’s a girl thing.

I'm not sure...
but I think I might have read something on Profootballtalk.com that said that the UFL was more lenient on players that wanted to leave for the NFL if they got a chance… Either way, his contract as a backup in the NFL would prolly pay the UFL or his team back like 5x over the amount of his UFL contract. Another interesting tidbit is that the UFL is only like 6 games & with the one year contract he signed with Las Vegas, he’d be available by Thanksgiving if needed. If he looks good first few games in the UFL… maybe Jaguars can sign him to a contract & hold his rights til UFL season over. I’m just using JP Losman as and example bc at this time I think he’s the best QB available… but if another QB shows promise during the UFL season, then I’m open to picking them up too.
I’m prolly thinking too much into it… but I’m trying to plan ahead in the case that DG goes down (knock on wood), because I don’t think Bouman or Smith is the answer to being the backup QB. What about JD Booty? I heard that it’s between him & T. Jackson to be released… since Farve arrived. I’m hoping Booty gets released, because I think he’s got more upside than T. Jackson… but I hear Vikes like Booty better (as we all do…).

Dude, do you remember how shaky homeboy was coming into the game against the Colts
after David Garrard got hurt two seasons ago? We still ended up fine. I think Bouman is a decent backup and has enough talent to get us through a few games. I’m not stressing. Better than Lemon….
BTW, does anyone know how Colt Brennan has been playing with the Redskins in the preseason so far? Kind of a fan, because I saw so many of his games when I lived in Hawaii.
Not good...
Threw 4/12 for a total of 43 yards & 1 int during 1st preseason game & this is after coming in during the 3rd qtr. vs scrubTheseus was vs a Ravens defense though, which looks pretty deep… so I’ll give him that. I heard on profootballtak that he was a lil full of himself during camp too…

Oh yea dude
He’s got major ego problems. But he looked real good last year during the preseason. Before he was even drafted he was charging 20 bucks for an autograph at a signing in Hawaii one day.
You seem him almost cry at the Sugar Bowl?
What about a 3-3-5 defense
We don’t have the 4th LB needed to run the 3-4, or the second DT to run the 4-3. We do have some capable DB’s. I know it’s a stretch, but could it be possible?
Quentin Groves
Is essentially a 3-4 linebacker. I think we’ll see what the coaching staff thinks of their attempt at the 3-4 in the next game. Pay attention to whether or not they switch back to playing 4-3 more or not.
I'd think you have to be super beastly in your d line and linebackers
for you to have pressure on the QB, the 3-3-5 is a college defensive scheme, right? I don’t know if it would fit in the NFL.
"HULU: An evil plot to destroy the world. Enjoy"
That's a great way to get blasted with runs up the middle
At least those didn’t work at all in the preseason game.
by MoveThoseChains on Aug 19, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions
I think we run it a bit
against the Colts…
That’s the funny thing about all this talk about the defense… even teams who run the 3-4 like PIT & NE play nickle, dime and short-yardage packages when the true 3-4 isn’t being used.
The NFL is a situational league. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 3-4 is being tried with the intention of putting faster guys on the field for the likes of IND and TEN.
