Bye Paul, Hello Boeckman

P.S. Thanks to viator for originally posting the link about this.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed rookie quarterback Todd Boeckman and waived first-year quarterback Paul Smith today.

Boeckman, 6-5, 243, was originally signed by the Jaguars on June 17 and was waived on July 31. He was a two-year letterman at Ohio State where he played in 27 games, completing 255 of 402 passes for 3,041 yards and 31 touchdowns. He served as team captain as a senior and started the first three games. He earned All-Big Ten honors as a junior as he threw for 2,379 yards and 25 touchdowns and led the conference with a 148.04 passing efficiency.

A native of St. Henry, Ohio, Boeckman was a four-year starter at St. Henry High School where he threw for 7,021 yards and 64 touchdowns. He earned all-state honors in football, basketball and baseball. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in consumer affairs in March of 2008.

Smith signed with the Jaguars as a rookie free agent in 2008 and spent the majority of the season on the club’s practice squad. He played in two of three preseason games this year.

Make no mistake about it, Paul was stinking up the place when he was in the last two preseason games. I wish him the best, but it became increasingly clear that he simply couldn't cut it in the NFL. It makes me wonder just why there was ever a competition between him and Bouman for the #2 spot. *Sees a ball batted at the line of scrimmage* Oh yeah, that's why.

Boeckman certainly isn't going to be a #2 quarterback at this stage of his career. He'll most likely end up on the practice squad and ride out the season there barring injury. That still leaves a hole for a dependable back up in the event that Garrard gets injured, which brings me to...

Everyone's favorite trade target Tyler Thigpen stunk up Arrowhead stadium last night. If nothing else, this means it might be easier for the Jaguars to get him if that is the case.

Yay!

Not an answer to our backup QB needs by all means… but seeing Smith on the sidelines, I thought he looked more like a ball boy than a NFL backup QB & his time on the field only proved it.

Every other position I think the Jaguars have addressed it accordingly except the QB position this year. I think they’re just didn’t want to start up another QB controversy, like with the Leftwich/Garrard issue or make moves that would hurt Garrard’s psyche… I think taking a look @ Sanchez prior to the draft upset Garrard to the point where they had to reassure him & him blabbing to the media & ruining our drafting/trade ability a bit. Maybe I’m just looking too much into it?

In the face of adversity, what you do from then on dictates who you really are...

Thanks

For the mention. I saw it on PFT first, then noticed KeithG posted it in a comment on Cold Cuts 2. He beat me to it, so he deserves the credit.

I thought

this move was going to happen. I wonder what Boeckman looks like in teal. I know one thing however after this move. This isn’t the last we’ll hear about the QB situation.

Im surprised we signed another QB

Figured we would cut Smith and call it good…..think Boeckman is gonna stick to the regular season?

Raw, but...

I love that guy. Doubt he’ll ever be more than a backup, but his raw ability is mouthwatering.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

His biggest problem

is accuracy, followed by his decision making.

Unless you're kerry collins and just "manage" the game

by handing the rock to the Rbs.

Other trade possibilities or another option?

I think the Thigpen trade is done, I doubt the Chefs will want to trade now with Cassel out unless the injury isn’t as bad as it looked. I would like to venture some other either trade options or pickups, Drew Stanton from the Lions has looked good any time he is in a game, leading his team to a touchdown in every preseason game he is in this year. Also the Pats just released Kevin O’Connell a thrid round pick from last year that has potential I think but would require some work still.

I'd like to have

Nate Davis if he’s available.

So What

He learned his college playbook, there is no way he couldn’t learn the Jaguars’ with a few years of sitting on the bench.

Same Here

I wanted Davis in the 6th round… yeah, he was still on the board then. He is a future starter.

He was a

5th rounder. And yes he was there in the fifth. I don’t think he has the upside because of probably weakness reading complex defenses, but he would be a great back up QB.

Thigpin is trash...

Are our collective standards so low that we would pray for a trade in order to get a subpar QB?

by Slvrgun on Aug 30, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly...

don’t trade picks… ride out the year and address it next year.

by Jaghomer on Aug 31, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Either of those would be interesting

I saw Stanton and i like him.

Kevin O’Connell

Was just released by the Patriots. He was the Patriots 3rd pick in 2008 and there highest drafted QB since drafting Drew Bledsoe. I wouldnt mind seeing him down here.
