Knighton has a DAMN strong base...

Uche couldn’t even move him… and Uche is no slouch… We may have something here… look at how low he starts in his stance.. That’s textbook run-stuffing position… Very encouraging.

That was a great find. Way to go Collin.

I agree about Knighton, he keeps his base. I also like the scrappy nature that I saw in Ellison and the effort from young players like Miller and and Julius Williams.

Yeah... now is the time of the year to troll and find nice easter eggs...

how about Julius williams almost going thorugh Pashos’ legs… haha… he’s definitely a DPR as of now… he’ll need development and weight to ever be a regular.

Julius Williams

I saw that and thought “Did Tony just lean on him?” I like the effort though that’s a great attribute to have.

That's why Veteran's are Veterans!

You can see Pashos fighting for his job. Harvey looked real good! and I guess those guys I am not too familiar with Allen and Shaw, I will not be familiar with on game day. Knighton not too bad…

Two guys Vick mentioned..

Stephenson and J. Williams look like they may stick around.

by Jaghomer on Aug 6, 2009 7:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Stephenson

was impressive to me. He looks a little lean, but he was still able to hold his ground really well. But if he’s that lean that probably means he can also probably be a a good down the field blocker on the second level. Probably means he can pass block a little too.

I don't know enough to really evaluate

… buut Knighton, Ellison and Harvey looked pretty good to me. The D-line looked more promising than I expected, although the co-ordination of the entire line is obviously more important than 1 on 1.

Miller… he may still have a lot to learn about the TE position, but he seems plenty strong and not afraid of contact.

by KeithG on Aug 6, 2009 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

QB's don't block anybody ahrdly ever...

I wouldn’t worry about it too much though. Mike Tice is probably the best TE coach in the NFL… He’s so overqualified for the position and knows his stuff.

Agreed

That’s why I’m so pleased to see that he has the heart and the strength. He seems to be a guy who is “teachable”. All the technique in the world is not going to help a guy who isn’t strong enough physically or mentally to go out there and hammer someone.

by KeithG on Aug 6, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he's ever

going to be a good inline blocker. I think he’s going to have to be more of an H-Back, where he can get a bit of momentum to help him block. He can also probably be a good receiver out of the backfield and in the perimeter where he seemed to do a lot of his running in college.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 6, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Dirk

Could let the guy carry the ball as well. When he’s at H-Back, bring him on a sweep outside to the perimeter.

But I think he showed enough in the last half of last year to not panic by this images

I thought he got a good piece of Washington in the first go and then he did better in the second go at Britton. In that short snapshot I think he held his own just fine.

Word

He held his point nicely against one of the teams best run blockers. I’m satisfied with that.

I know the sample size is not suffecient

but looking at the different running backs Montell Owens looks the best. Washington was a close second, with nice burst and deception. Bolen had a nice pad level and ran with some conviction. Jennings came in 4th, imo. He runs kind of high. He wasn’t patient, running into his blocker one time; enough so that he stopped feet momentarily(Which is very bad). He wasn’t deceptive. And he didn’t look like he had the initial burst the other guys did.
Granted the exercise was made for the linemen, but Jennings looked underwhelming in comparison to what I’ve been hearing/reading.
I hate saying all that written above, because I really like the guy and I really still hope he proves all his doubters wrong; but I just don’t see it, not in his highlights, not in the senior bowl, and not right now.
Is anyone else seeing what I’m seeing?

by Ewdtrey on Aug 7, 2009 2:24 AM EDT reply actions

Scratch the Owens comment. I thought I saw a 24, but it was a 34. That explains why Washington came into such a close second. lol

by Ewdtrey on Aug 7, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions

jennings is too wild

he does run high and holds the ball out. Very wreckless

I think this is due to being physically dominant over opponents. think a great high school just outdoing the competition. This causes him to never “buckle down”.

Jennings just needs the camp and the strictness of the NFL. I think he’ll be fine, but for now he is still wild

by Surteal on Aug 7, 2009 2:51 AM EDT up reply actions

i rewatched it only watching the backs

i liked jennings feet a lot, except on his last turn where he kind of stalled. Bolen did it afterwards. It may have been on purpose i’m not sure but it was odd.

Washington does have quickness but he runs wide with his feet. that seems to negate the quickness some. Jennings was the best as far as moving forward, but it was inconsistent. So for that i would say that he had the best but wasn’t the best.

Washington has potential but i just don’t like his footwork. It’s weird. Does anyone else notice this?

The most consistent award goes to Bolen. He was straight-line and secure and kept his feet pumping. i like him

by Surteal on Aug 7, 2009 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

On Jennings, all i can say is he's a 7th round pick

There’s bound to be a couple gears not toally meshed together, Washington is just now getting it all together.

"HULU: An evil plot to destroy the world. Enjoy"

by TheTealDeal on Aug 8, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Bolen is very much

the most consistent. He kind of runs like Peyton Hillis with a slightly better pad level even, but slightly tighter hips. I wonder what kind of hands he has. If MJD ever goes down (knock on wood that he doesn’t) and we want a 2 back set, he may be the guy running behind Greg Jones.

As for Jennings though, I don’t like his feet. A narrow base means dead legs on contact (:37). It’s similar to McFadden’s style of running. He also has a long stride, which means it’s hard for him to stop and start again.(:55) A long stride is ok if you’re a WR, or if your 20 yards down field already and your just trying to outrun everyone; but it’s not the same at the line of scrimmage.

Washington gets his knees high. He also has quick feet and a short stride while getting through the hole.
A wide base when trying to be patient allows for a better change of direction. Just watch Adrian Peterson’s wide base when waiting up the middle.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 7, 2009 4:26 AM EDT reply actions

i rewatched som more

Jennings runs tentatively….he doesn’t seem prepared to run through some one…i didn’t write second down but its at the end and he runs to the right of the screen. it is obvious

i see what you mean about the narrow base.

Bolen was just all around solid, all you can ask more is for straight line speed. Once he would get around, he never seemed fast. Two reasons this doesn’t matter 1) the drill didn’t require that he run farther and 2) he’s a FB
He also never quit, ever

Washington has the most speed and seemed to be very aware. I remember a spin move and a pause step behind the line

I think

Vic has kind of hyped the guy up a little too much. He likes big backs and that’s what Rashad is. He likes size and speed from big schools. Keep in mind last year he had rated Gholston and Darren McFadden as his top picks. He also had Wells as his 3rd best player in last years draft.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 7, 2009 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

I'm definitely

not writing the guy off. He still has potential. It’s just not all perfect like some people make him out to be.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 7, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Coming out Jennings was criticized heavily for two things: Fumbles and his upright running style.

While his ball security hasn’t been as issue it’s clear he still runs a little to high and now we see that he can indecisive at the LOS. You can see why Jack Del Rio continues to promote Greg Jones as MJD’s main relief.

I wouldn't count out Washington.

I liked what I saw from him; nice movement and acceleration. He seems to be an afterthought to most and yes I’ll admit it, I kind of overlooked him. I drank a little of Vic’s kool-aid about Jennings but Washington is fighting.

Washington could beat out Jennings for that roster spot. It all comes down to them just fighting it out though.
