The Hating on Eugene Monroe has to Stop

452391563_medium

It has gotten out of hand.

Star-divide

Every article about the Jaguars and their starting offensive line these days seems to find a way to rip rookie offensive tackle Eugene Monroe. From the jaguars.com message board to the Bleacher Report the hating seems to have no end. Monroe may have had his struggles in his first two games as a Jaguar but we all must realize that he has gone up against very good opponents. This is more than I can say for last year's first overall pick and pro bowl selection, Jake Long.

Let's all take a step back for a second and revist the rookie season of Jake Long. Drafted first overall after the Dolphins' horrendous 1-15 season the previous year, the Dolphins had high hopes for Long. Their hopes were answered with results as the rookie cruised to allowing only 2.5 sacks and was elected to his first pro bowl. However, it was no secret that the Dolphins and Long had a favorable schedule in 2008, as a matter of fact, the only respectable pass rusher that Long faced all year was Mario Williams of the Houston Texans. In the game against Houston, Long was dominated by Super Mario and allowed 2.0 sacks (he would only let up 0.5 sacks to the other sub-par defensive ends he faced that season). But, at the end of the day people didn't hesitate to immediately write him off as one of the most dominant offensive tackles in the game as most people did not notice that he was not so dominant when he was faced with a challenge. The Dolphin's first game of the 2009 NFL Season was against the Atlanta Falcons and sack machine John Abraham. Chad Pennington went into the game expecting his blind side would be in good hands (as it had been most of 2009). However, to many peoples' surprise, Abraham completely dominated, as Long allowed 2.0 sacks (just like he did against Mario Williams in 2008). My point is that the rough competition and the early struggles of our own Eugene Monroe may in fact be a blessing in disguise. By going up against top of the line defensive ends in his first three games (Dwight Freeney, Darnell Dockett, and Mario Williams) Monroe will gain the experience needed to one day be a dominant offensive tackle in this league. People need to realize that his struggles will benefit him in the long run where as going up against poor competition may hurt him (as it did Jake Long). Get off his back Jaguars' fans, one day he will be great, for now we must just give him time.

This is getting silly

Can’t second guess the coach
Can’t question the drafting or examine the first round draft choices as players
Can’t question the play of the players
Can’t question the play calling.
Can’t discuss potential draft selections.

This is the National Football League, not your son’s junior high school team.
$17 million for Derrick Harvey, $19 million for Eugene Monroe, but give them an achievement ribbon and don’t hurt their feelings.

I think it's about expectations

… and having realistic ones. Monroe has struggled, but still did better than Khalif Barnes would have. It’s cazy to expect a rookie LT to dominate very good veteran pass rushers straight away. If it was really that easy, NFL football would be a joke. If a rookie LT could realistically be expected to dominate Freeny etc, then Freeny might as well give up playing.

I completely agree. To expect your rookie tackle(in our case TACKLES) to come in and be pro bowlers right off the bat is having unrealistic expectations. Now to expect them to have some mistakes here and there but continue working and getting better IS realistic.

I actually think

Barnes would have performed better, but…by the next time we meet the Colts I expect Monroe to surpass Barnes.

That might be correct

but like you said by the next time he will have surpassed Barnes so hes just taking his lumps like all rookies do. Monroe has tons of potential and is our future. While Barnes at his best was not to much better then Monroe is now.

It's not that we can;t second guess

the coach, players etc but do it in an intelligent manner, not “oh Monroe allowed a sack, he sucks, he’s a bust, get rid of him” and “Jack needs to go, how darn he let us lose two in a row.” You just need to not write posts in the heat of the moment, hell I was cursing every player on the team sunday, but once I had a good cry (jk..lol) I saw that its not all bad. Monroe is a rookie, starting at the most important position on the o-line. As for Harvey well, one more season then cut him.

He was not ranked one of the top LTs in the draft because he interviewed well.

Putting on my Lions hat, we are currently dealing with the play of four rookie starters, including our QB. Sometimes it is painful to watch, but some of us accept the mistakes as part of the learning process. Others………not so much.

However, that does not mean that you cannot criticize their poor play and mental errors. They are professionals and should not accept failure. But those of you who are questioning whether he will ever be ready or whether the Jags should have picked him need to think about what you are saying.

If Eugene is not ready to play and continues to be put onto the field, that is not his fault. Check with your coaching staff for that blame.

I don't blame the coaches

Think about. The fans want their cake and eat it too.
Yes, there is a small possibility that Tra could be better. But there is no way to tell with his back injury.
As for our cake. We want to be good today, and good tomorrow; but unless we want to limit our potential tomorrow for the long run, we need to get the young guys on the field now.
