Quick Thoughts

1. Eugene Monroe finally looked like the heir to Tony Boselli today. Mario Williams' name wasn't mentioned with any relevance until he made the game clinching horse collar tackle that resulted in a personal foul call and the Jags running out the clock.

2. The pass defense is still a work in progress. Matt Schaub had a 74% completion percentage and threw for 300 yards in defeat. In addition, this is the third week in a row the Jaguars have given up a completion percentage of higher than 70%. If the defense was forcing an absurd amount of check down throws, that is one thing, but they aren't.

3. Maurice Jones-Drew is the man, plain and simple. This was the kind of game we were all expecting from him when he was made the starter in the offseason.

More Quick Thoughts...

Offensive playcalling finally strikes down the field and not 2 yards into the flats.

Garrard was still pressured but he made some great throws.

Mike Sims-Walker is a beast. He will be the #1 WR this year.

Mike Thomas is awesome. The reverses will fool many teams.

Ernest Wilford looks like he could be an effective TE. Blocks and has good hands.

Defense has some pressure but needs just a little more. Penetrate and destroy those pockets!

JDR made one of the worst challenges I have ever seen.

by Slvrgun on Sep 27, 2009 7:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The best thing about the reverses is

by being successful, they force the contain man to follow him outside and that will allow MJD to break inside like he did on the 61 yd TD run. Without the outside guys concern for the end around, that guy might have stopped Maurice.

It was a good day for the MJD owners in Fantasy Football

I didn’t have him :/

If you watch

the 61 yarder you can see that everyone on their defense was following Greg Jones. The whole defense got sucked in to that left side.

The JDR challenge was one of the stupiest things he's done yet

That could have cost us a chance to win the game – it didn’t obviously, but I went nuts when he threw the challenge flag. That TO could have been crutial in a final drive situation. Stupid to put your team in that position.
Keep chopping foot!!!

O line was much improved, still needs work but definately moving in the right direction.

Garrard palyed better today .

Offense MUST establish a solid passing game to get D’s out of 8 & 9 men fronts and constant blitzing – today was a step in right diection.

We were fortunate to play against the worse D in the league – we won’t have that luxury every week.

Defense – actually saw some pressure and 2 sacks. Even the invisble man (Harvey) had a pass defensed. However, they continue to yeild 300+ passing yards.

Basking in the glow of victory – swweeeetttttt

No one has mentioned this....

But Rashean has proven the last couple of games that he’s still a great CB…..

He limited Fitz and Andre to very low numbers, and they both are 2 of the best 3 Wrs in the League right now. he also had a very good game against the Colts.

I think the main problem with the secondary comes with the play of both of the safeties, especially in coverage. That thing is magnified by the underachieving pass rush that this team has. If we happened to develop an average pass rush this defense could jump to be a very good one.

Every team sees the tape

They will know what makes their quarterbacks 75% complete.
Overall I would say the biggest positive is the attitude in which they played as a team.
Defense although over manned played tough.
Offense is on the brink of something special.
Defensive line needs help
Just my opinion.

and the play calling was inspired. I love a fun and exciting game like this one was.

If Kerry Collins Completes 70%+

I will become an alcoholic. If he throws for over 300 yards I’m going to quit, go on welfare, and take up drinking full time saying things like “The 2006 Jaguars were my biggest disappointment.”

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

I think our DTs are a very deep and strong group

We had Landri, Henderson, Knighton (Get Better), Ellison, Montavius Stanley (got a sack, blocked a FG in preseason). For a team that plays a hyrbrid 3-4 Zone Blitz/4-3 we have great DTs.

I was reading the post-game rant by the Texan fans and most are complaining about that pass interferance call. But how about the fact that on of the refs tackled MJD? ;)

We lost fair and square, better team won today, know matter how much that hurts die hard Texans fans. Defense is to blame if anyone.

Another reason to like Texans fans more than Colts,Titans fans.
1) David Garrard is kidnapped before the game by Florida vigilantes on swamp boats and replaced by Tim Tebow. No one seems to notice until the game has already started.

2) Tebow manages to run up 15 points on the Texans (one touchdown, two field goals and one safety – he also starts as NT) before the Texans figure out the best way to stop him – Amobi Okoye whispers into Tebow’s ear that he’s a Zoroastrian and Tebow spends the rest of the game on the Texans’ bench trying to convert him.

3) Meanwhile, the Texans running woes (both on offense and defense) are erased when they line Frank Okam up in the backfield and have Steve Slaton play NT. Okam runs for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns including one ridiculous play where he runs from his own 35 to the house while breaking 11 tackles – one from every Jag on the field – and then attempts to mimic the Lambeau leap, killing three fans (including Jacoby’s mom). Jacoby is so enraged at the death of his mom that he promptly muffs every punt and kick he attempts to field. Meanwhile Slaton racks up six tackles, six sacks and six fumble recoveries, causing Tebow to give up his attempts to convert Okoye and move to California to take up surfing and live on the beach.

Texans win, 666-15.

Anyone watching the Indy game?

I just watched Freeney pull his spin move on Arizona’s LT Gandy. Now… I like Gandy. He plays extremely well – and the fact that Dwight pulled that move on him and forced Warner to panic made me even more optimistic about Monroe. See… Monroe, in his first NFL game, went against that! And he did… okay. Not terrible, but certainly not good. And today against Houston? He held his own against one of the best defensive ends in the AFC south. I feel good about our team’s future.

Dude

I thought that Gerald Alexander looked rather good when he played. I say take Reggie Nelson out and play him at the safety. Brian Russell looked like an older Considine out there, remember the hit on Anderson? I like our defense’s physicality. Why can’t we rush the passer? Anyone out there wanna take a grab?

Stanley and my boy Ingram ( i think it was Ingram)

got sacks. I think we were above average pass rush today.

close to my take on it

Reggie Nelson made a few inexcusable goofs this game, that’s just not acceptable at this point in his career. I mean he missed even the most basic things, even when all signs said just stay and play he couldn’t stick to the basic schemes. He needs to be nailed to the bench. At this point it’s not like we’re showcasing him, no one wants Nelson and I think it’s clear he’ll never be anything other than the worst player on our starting D.

The coaches just need to admit Nelson is not our guy now, and he’s not learning by playing, so he might as well watch. Similarly politics are keeping Brian Russell at FS, but he’s strictly an insurance policy at this point. We need to move towards a longer term.

G.Alexander whiffed on a few tackles and that means he’ll never be an impact SS, he needs to take take starting FS reps ASAP.

I don't think

Gerald or Nelson can take over the job because of their stellar play. A start by one of them is by default. Though Nelson is actually improving. Something tells me Tucker and Considine are really helping him. As of right now, Derek is still the weak link, for now. Nelson did break up a pass in the endzone, and he’s looked better in man to man. I don’t think Gerald offers any upside.
As for B Russell, he had a nice tackle on special teams. And even though our coverage teams were not great, they are showing improvement.

The Kickoff Coverage

Had one goof, where Jacoby Jones took the ball out to the 37, but other than that, I thought the kickoff coverage was great. There were at least four times where he was wrestled down inside the 20.

Crazy day today

Both Houston teams lost, The Texans and the Oilers!!!!!

by Pickle on Sep 27, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Couple of more thoughts ...,

What a rookie class … Monroe & Britton, anchors for a long time … Knighton, what a find in the middle … Cox, quiet today but incredible upside … Mike Thomas, welcome to the bigtime! … Zach Miller, his time will come, and soon. Gene had to be proud today.

We need a new punter. The pre-season competiton looked like it worked for a while, but Poslesh was pathetic today.

There is hope for Marcedes Lewis, and I’m still holding out for Harvey. But Reggie Nelson needs to join Leftwich, Reggie Williams and Matt Jones on the Shack Stack of Firstround Busts. We need help at safety badly. JDR said on the pre-game show they were trying out Nelson at nickel, which sounds desparate.

Thought the beleagured O line had their best day. David got hit a few times, and hard, but overall a much better job. Where was Super Mario? Don’t recall him having an impact.

Everyone calling for Garrard’s head needs to chill the eff out and watch the tape of this game. His toughness, his decisions, his accuracy. He can lead us where we want to go.

Mike Walker, you stay healthy. What a receiver he is going to be. When did we last have someone who could get that kind of separation?

How delicious would it be to get to 2-2 and have the Titans 0-4?

by ruffdaddy on Sep 27, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

im afraid

That’s going to be one angry team. 4 close losses has them up against a wall, and our D is nowhere near as effective as what the Jets are putting out there.

Although at least we match up a bit… in the sense Collins isn’t really a killer QB. For me the best part of this game will be seeing if JDR’s precious LB core can show up against a tough line and a fast RB. I don’t have hight hopes, but just maybe Durant can impress me. I wonder if we’ll play a scheme or acutally put one guy keying on Chris Johnson?

by alsonot on Sep 27, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think

Durant being in the middle will be huge for us this year against the Tits.
As for matching up well against their offense, I would have to say no. Will it be less of a challenge yes.
The strength of our DL is now the DT position, but Landri is the only great gap shooter, which is what we need in this game against a good zone running offense. And really, a 4-3 is better agains their OL, because it allows the LB’s to flow downhill better. I have a feeling Groves, Julius Williams, and Ingram will be put on skates during this game.
At DT I would have to activate Knighton, Landri, Ellison(Even though I like Stanley better), and Henderson. We are really gonna have to rely on Groves and Harvey to not miss tackles.
I have a feeling Cox will have a good game though. He finally gets to play a receiver that isn’t pro bowl quality.

I think Nelson at NB

is a set up for a Tyron Brackenridge to move to FS. I think he could be a nice fit there. He tackles well. He’s not afraid of hitting anyone. He’s got decent size and good length. And he’s a turnover machine. And best of all, very savvy. Something the position lacks right now.

Watching the Cards/Colts game

and I’m trying to figure out why we did so much better vs the Colts than the Cards. Colts pass rush is killing the Cards tonight and making me feel a little better about our rookie tackles. Was it the Cards’ DTs & the Colts’ DEs that gave us so much trouble? Would make sense since both defenses were getting good pressure til Dockett got injured.

It’s something to look at, but our line looks to be gelling just in time for the game vs the Tits. I hope the Tits fans get their wish and put in VY… =)

I think we are seeing

how underrated Garrard is, in that Colt/Card game. Garrard saw an even worse pass rush, and he did not even have half the talent at receiver, and he still kept us much closer in the game. Warner would have had a complete meltdown behind our OL.
I think it also shows how good our safety play was against the Colts. And obviously, along with the safeties it showed how good our LB’s were to keep Clark somewhat in check.
