A Couple New Players

Via Adam Shefter: The Jaguars will sign 2 new players in Brian Russell a Safety formally of Seattle, and Kynan Forney a Guard formally of the San Diego.

I'm kind of surprised by the signings. Neither of them are going to the practice squad guys, as both are veterans at the age of 30 and 31.

Both of these guys look like veteran back ups to me that are much more smart players rather than talented players. But to be honest I've never really paid attention to either player to know much about them. However they were both good enough to be perennial starters for many years, and it appears both were fairly productive. And neither is so old that they will be considered over the hill per say, but I imagine no one will get super excited by the signings. I just wonder which player(As in one player) will be cut, being that we are already at 52 players.

We knew the team would likely sign at least one player

with the release of Kenard Cox. Russell is an in the box safety and Forney was a starter back in Atlanta when Vick was still the QB. I agree both are good vets and this is what I expected when I saw players like K. Cox, M. Stanley and J. Wyche all make it through the final cuts.

Jacksonville Jaguars. It's what I do.

Hey this team always

brought a veteran to the defensive backfield: Sammy Knight, Aaron Glenn, William James, etc.
I would be happy if Russell would come

Agreed… I would be fine with both of these guys…

As a Seahawks fan

I’d say Brian Russell is one of the worst safeties in the league.

Check out Field Gulls for a comprehensive breakdown of how poorly he plays. The cerebral stuff is baloney, because during his time here he would continuously try and “be a part of the play” by piling on a late hit. Sometimes he actually whiffs on the late hit.

It's more than the late hitting to clarify

It’s the missed tackles, the setting picks on his own players, and screening out Marcus Trufant on a double team leading to a TD, and the whiffs on blitzes time and time again that had us agitated.

WHO????????

Never heard of either of these guys. Guard I can understand because we let Pashos go. Did you guys see the Niners signed him and Atlanta took Williams?? If this guy is another Sammy Knight, hey, bring him in here. But we dont need another B. Williams. Is he a FS or SS?

No matter what, he won't be another B-dub

Because he’s not being counted on to start, and he’s a hell of a lot cheaper.

Russell could be

He was a decent safety for the Browns, and went off in search of a payday. Seattle Stuck with him.

I could be wrong, but I think he’ll be a SS. Seattle played him at FS and Deon Grant at SS (they should have been flipped imo). Russell isn’t a coverage guy at all.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

Dennis Norman released

to make room on the roster. Jaguars.com said Forney is noted as being apart of the NFL’s top rushing attack from 04’- 06’ with the Falcons prior to the Mike Vick & Petrino fiasco & making 1st alt to the Pro Bowl in 05’.

I’m thinking Jags picked him up bc due to concerns with our running attack… hopefully he can make a contribution as early as the season opener, but I dought it.

i live in seattle and have watched Russell

he is BAD!!!!
no exsplotion at all.
he cant hit.
and he can barly cover.
people were partying in the streets when he was released from seattle.
i hope he proves me wrong but i think this is a waist of money and a roster spot.

Is this guy cheaper than Norman?

I’m kind of sad to see Dennis go. He’s stepped in and done a pretty good job at multiple positions and he’s a couple years younger. I guess I always liked him because he’s smart.

by rusty904 on Sep 8, 2009 4:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Forney I can accept

but with all these Seattle people chiming in… I’m a little worried about Russell. He’s just a back up though… so he can be easily let go. Way Gene’s been last couple of days… I wouldn’t be surprised if he cuts him, if he doesn’t like what he sees during practice.

He managed to start every game for us

For 2 seasons despite his piss-poor play on the field.

This is Brian Russell in a nutshell.

And this GIF (also courtesy of BrianL on Field Gulls) was Russell’s worst moment as a Seahawk.

I'm so jealous!

You guys got AC It was awesome to watch him play for 2 years here at wake. He’s the best linebacker I’ve ever seen play/ Freak athlete, smart, amazing work ethic, and no ego. HOF bound! Met him a couple times and I can’t say enough good things about the guy.

Aaron Curry was my favorite prospect in the draft

I love watching that guy play. With that said, Vernon Gholston was my fave last year… yeah. Nuff said.

Matt Forte

was my favorite prospect last year, and I thought Chris Long would have been the best player for us last year.

Lol

(I think gene did this to increase Seattle fan-Jaguars fan relations) He might play ST.

He was the only guy who got a clean pick this preseason

and that was at the fs spot he is not a hitter which is why i think ss is not for him.
