Mr. Lewis

What do you think we can expect from Marcedes Lewis this year?  He seems to always tease with his ability, but lacks consistency.  He's obviously a good-to-great blocker, but thus far has been lacking in the pass catching department.  He has great size, decent speed, and has made some clutch catches.  I can remember in particular the 4th and short catch in the playoff game against the Pats when Garrard went deep to Lewis and he made a great catch.  It seems like this is his make or break year, and I'd be very excited to see him get 60-70 catches and some TDs.

Thoughts?

I hope he will be a good blocker

I expect to be a help at the offensice line.
And if sometimes he can catch some ball that would be a little bit more extra.

Blocking first..

I expect most of the time he’ll be helping on on the DE with the rookie OT’s and occasionally slip out down the seam.

yeah, that would be awesome for us if he was awesome

but who knows if he gets the looks

Awesome

That would be awesome.

You guys are awesome

and I think it’s awesome that you guys agree that it would be awesome if Marcedes could reach his potential awesomeness. But, we can’t all be awesome, however.

Dang, I ran that joke through the mud. Sorry.

Exactly. If your fleeing on a 4-wheeler

and I can peg you with a rock, no problem, it’s time for an upgrade, my man.

i would compare him SLIGHTLY to Matt Jones. You see flashes of what could be a great career, only to be bobbled away a couple of plays later. Matt and Marcedes can make great catches, but not consistently enough. Or, maybe, Marcedes is a little like Kyle Brady. A good blocking TE, who catches a couple of good one’s every so often. In any case, I hope this is his year, if not, well… We shall leave it up to Gene Smith.

Every year he is supposed to have a breakout year.

Call him what he is: not exactly a bust but nothing more than average.

by Slvrgun on Sep 9, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

but if he could catch every ball thrown his way, he could easily be recognized as a potential star. He still has upside. Think Troy Williamson.

I have the fear

that all of the Harris era 1st rounders will be gone within 2-3 years…

Which is a shame, for sure.

Those 1st rounders are supposed to be our foundation, the core of our team.

by Blair72 on Sep 9, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Gene's guys will

take that role pretty soon…

I agree as well

But think of all of the past draft picks we’ve had that have been complete busts and think of how many potential contributors and starters Gene has gotten from one draft. Gene Smith really does look like a genius and is making Shack look pretty bad right about now…

Luckily MJD wasn't a first rounder

He definitely has the tools to produce.......

Hes a beast that is afraid to get hit! He cannot catch in traffic. Maybe he just gets nervous…… I think I said this earlier this year, I love Marcedes becuse he can block and he is a Jaguar. But he’s bigger than most of the defensive opponents we play against. Your a monster!!!!!!!!!! Act like one…….

by FRANKdubz on Sep 9, 2009 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Hold one now

I’ve never seen him flinch catching the ball in traffic. Never never. He’s not afraid. He’s just having a problem catching those fast balls to his chest.

by Ewdtrey on Sep 10, 2009 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree

It’s definitely the fastballs. But, he’s in the NFL. Gotta have sticky fingers.

by Blair72 on Sep 10, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah maybe your right......

David does fire the ball at Lewis. I’ll watch with a new outlook on it from now on….. But I swear he drops it in traffic more than in the open….

LOL

I think it’s both. I’ve definitely seen him drop a few 30 yard or so passes when he was wide open.

by Blair72 on Sep 10, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotta be a big year for Marcedes ...

… and Reggie Nelson. I for one hope that these first round picks leave some sort of positive legacy for Shack and don’t give Gene a reason to dump ’em. But I have to admit I am excited to see what Zach Miller is capable of.

by ruffdaddy on Sep 9, 2009 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

Zach Miller is going to be a great pass-catching TE

I see the potential value of this guy. Purely opinion and I have no foundation to base this comment besides intuition, but I have a feeling this guy is going to earn himself a lucrative contract one day.

by Blair72 on Sep 9, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

He was a ball hawk ...

in college, where his speed and athleticism dominated. But in the NFL a free safety has other responsibilities and sometimes Reggie has no idea where he is supposed to be.

by ruffdaddy on Sep 9, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with you

I was just mainly asking that because I know he has the talent. He just needs to study more or something. Stop hanging out with floridafalcon so much, haha…

by Blair72 on Sep 9, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i wish i knew that much

i might walk up to ms state’s football office and say “dear sir, i want to be a scout and i will work harder than you do. If you don’t believe me, test me. Sincerely, this guy (and point with my two thumbs).”

I've always wondered if it's a confidence issue

When you have a case of the dropsies it tends to compound itself because you think you have a case of the dropsies. The catches he has been able to make show that the talent is there, but it’s these random drops that confuse me. I don’t think he is afraid of contact. It’s just a mental issue in my opinion. That’s why I’m hesitant to just cut him loose. Perhaps it’ll all just click. If not, then he’ll have to go unfortunately.
