Kennedy Pola makes Lateral move,Signs with Titans

The Titans hired running backs coach Kennedy Pola from the AFC South rival Jaguars on Monday.

Pola replaces Earnest Byner, who was fired over the weekend. Byner spent two seasons on the Titans’ staff.

Pola spent the last five seasons in Jacksonville, and Fred Taylor (2008) and Maurice Jones-Drew (2010) earned Pro Bowl honors during the coach’s time there. The Jaguars also totaled the third-most rushing yards in the NFL over that time.

“Kennedy is a fine coach, and I am very much looking forward to working with him to see the contributions that he can add to our staff,” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement released by the team. “He did a great job with the running backs down in Jacksonville and he had an instrumental role in their run game.”

Pola has 18 years of coaching experience, including 12 seasons as a college coach and one year with the Browns (2004).

Wait he signed as running backs coach?

I thought he was leaving for a higher title. This is frustrating.

Jack Del Rio said...

…that Pola wanted to get a “fresh start” somewhere. He said that Pola would have liked a promotion somewhere else, but that he would also look for a change of scenery if the opportunity presented itself. I think this was from the Jaguars This Week from a couple weeks ago when he also talked about Tice leaving.

I don’t really have a problem with it, but it does kind of suck that it’s with the Titans.

But Jack said there he wants a fresh start as a OC...

This move to the same position in a divisional rival makes me a bit frustrated. Really a very little bit…

sad to see a good coach and a nice guy leave.. especially to anyone in the AFC South… but, this could get us a new RB coach who is even better… possible? sure… probable? unlikely…

maybe he was given a “hey, join the Titans this year as RB coach and we’ll put you at the top of the list for OC next year if you are super duper.”

I'm sad to see him go BUT

I think we need to move on, when you look at the RB he has had to work with Fred and Maurice he has had some of the best RB talent that has played the game of late. Don’t get me wrong, he has done a great job but I think we will be fine without him. (I’m disappointed with what he did with Jennings, I was hoping for more progress)

by Messina on Jan 25, 2010 7:49 PM EST reply actions

I don't think

you realize how much Jennings had to improve.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 25, 2010 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

I do realize how much he has improved BUT

is it because of Pola, or from playing behind Maurice, or both? Lest we forget Maurice knows what it is like to be the number two guy behind a great RB, and he admits that he learned so much from him so you know Maurice is mentoring Jennings. Now I’m not saying Pola isn’t a good RB coach or that he hasn’t helped Jennings game etc, I just thought he could have made more progress with Jennings. I just don’t think people should be panicking about his departure.
(Oh and Ewdtrey, did Jennings make them same improvement that Nelson has made that you have been arguing all season?)

by Messina on Jan 26, 2010 9:19 AM EST up reply actions

Nelson

hardly improved in comparison. And unlike Jennings, Nelson has had setbacks.

How else are we supposed to judge a coach than to see how the players under him are improving? Can’t just assume all evidence is inexorable or fallible, because then any argument is unsupported.

I usually do

but then again I can mess up from time to time when reading through text, especially when there is little background. I forget who is who a lot, so back grounds are hard for me to keep track of. haha

Why is everyone blowing a gasket over Pola leaving?

Out of all the position coaches, losing a running backs coach is easily the least significant.

Exept he is one your best RB coaches who will

coaching Chris Johnson the biggest weapon of our divisional rival John…

That makes me worring. We see how Jennings was better at the end of the season. IMagine that process with CJ…

Fkoridafalcon-if you are around here-please give us details how this deal could beebn made-All the news was about Pola will be an OC somewhere…And he goes to the same position at the best running team in our division….

Losing Mike Tice was a much bigger loss

I hope we can find the right coaches

for replacing them. Other then maybe the strength coach Richesson; I saw nobody who made me WOW from the recent new coach signings…

The Titans

That’s what sucks. I wouldn’t want to lose a chewed wad a gum to them. Oh well, see ya Pola.

ZB, I think you are overthinking this RB thing.

CJ is good because he is CJ. Coaches have very little to do with it. RB is probably the most player independent positions. It’s pretty much all on you and your blockers. RB Coaches don’t contribute as much as you like to think. Not a big lost.

Hey we can all see what a coach can bring to the team

in Tice and Pola (+) and in Monachino(-) so guys; don’t underestimate this change!

Why

Did the running backs coach get fired when CJ had 2,000 yards rushing?

Because it doesn’t matter who the running back coach is. A running back has it or he doesn’t. Anybody can teach him the little stuff.

I don't think it's a big deal

But I do think in terms of protections and etc the RB’s there will get better. That includes the FB’s too. Remember Greg Jones was a RB before he got here, and now he’s one of the best FB’s in the league.
I think Pola also has a hand in offensive playcalling and etc. Not to mention he knows our offense really well, I’m sure that wont help us when we play each other next year.
I think overall this wont be a huge factor, but this is a game of inches, so every little thing has a chance of tipping the scales.

Fisher

He’s the devil, I’m sure of it. Unfortunately, he’s bloody brilliant. Addition by subtraction…even with coaches. He just nailed us with a low blow in the offseason. Dirty Titans!

Any rumors or inside information by chance?

by Jermaside4 on Jan 26, 2010 11:57 AM EST reply actions

Yeah...

Interesting move- I think Byner wanna prove that Fisher’s move was a failure-so he will be a motivated coach!!!!
