Best case scenario for the draft

If Jacksonville could trade down from 10th or 11th spot in the first round with the Patriots, who have the 22nd pick in the first round and the 12th, 15th, and 21st in the second round( I know, unreal). Maybe they would give us their first round and one of their 2nd rounders to move up and get a top 10 player and still have 2 second rounders. The Jags would then have the 22nd pick to get the best player available and if say, they get the 12th or 15th pick in the second round and take Tebow if he's still around, which is a possibility. I haven't been a big proponent of drafting Tebow, but it would be worth a second round pick to see how much effect he would have on the fanbase, and even if he is gone already, we have recovered the second rounder we traded for Cox, a worthwhile trade, while avoiding having to pay a top ten signee. At 22nd, we should be able to get a starter to fill one of several holes. I must be a draft nerd because I heard on the radio that there was 88 days to the draft and actually got excited.

I like the trade back

But I would do so to get Iupati in the late first round.
Then BAP in the second, which basically means no to Tebow.

If we don’t trade back I like Brian Price at #10 or #11

He’s a huge difference maker. He completely changed the defense at UCLA. He was almost a one man pass rush.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 27, 2010 11:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Where would Price play? He is a DT. Actually a UT.

I thought the Jags were happy with Knighton and Henderson at DT?

Hard to justify picking a guy at #10 and use him as a situational pass rusher.

It would not surprise me to see Henderson get traded

Exactly

I would trade Henderson away if we got someone like Price. We got enough run stuffers at DT. We need more pass rushers(We had 14 sacks all season); and Henderson is getting old, losing value, and not getting it done as a pass rusher.
Price is not a typical 2gap run stuffer, but he will still make plays in the run game. He makes a lot of plays behind the LOS that aren’t sacks, so he’s doing something right in the run game. And plays behind the line of scrimmage often times means long downs and a better chances for the defense to get off the field. Besides, I would sacrifice a little in the run game to boost the pass rush. And I expect Knighton with his size and better strength next year can take up some of the slack.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 28, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wondered about that.

I am a frequent visitor to the Jags site and I thought people were very happy with Big John’s performance this year.
But I completely understand [and agree with] Ewdtrey’s reasoning. A DT who can penetrate and rush the passer is a key part of good defences. You cannot just have two run stuffers in the middle. You will get no pass rush up the middle and will make the DE’s job that much harder if the QB can just step up into the pocket to avoid the outside rush.
As well, the Jags have an excellent LB group which should help to contain the run.

Great responses.

He played good this year to give us better leverage and hopefully better picks.

I think in this years

draft class, the meat of the talent is late in the 1st and in the second round. Any 2 picks in the 1st 2 rounds is fine with me?

The best case scenario for the Jaguars

is Joe Haden still aviable at 10…

That's a tough

choice for me. But if I had to make the choice, I know Price would have the bigger impact and he’s a big guy so he would be my pick. Price would make Mathis and Derek better players. Haden would have a hard time seeing the field in a base defense.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 28, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mathis could attempt to move to FS

I've thought about it

a lot for that matter. Don’t know if the coaches would ever do something like that. He’s probowl CB. What is he at FS?

by Ewdtrey on Jan 28, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well he could jump routes all day......

His gambling wouldnt be much of a gamble from that deep in the secondary. I love Rashean at CB, but ha may be more effective at FS.

by FRANKdubz on Jan 28, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree

that he could be a good FS. Just don’t know if you mess with something as good as Mathis at CB. It’s like trying to move Revis to FS, you don’t mess with whatever is working for you if you can help it. Granted Mathis isn’t the player that Revis is at this point in their careers.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 28, 2010 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Didn't he start out

As a safety for us? I’m not saying that’s where he should play. I’m just asking a question.

Vae Victis!

by viator on Jan 28, 2010 6:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mostly due to injuries

he hasn’t had a pro bowl year. That and being in this market.
And yes he did play some safety early on.
And a gambling FS that guesses wrong is a lot worse than a gambling CB that guesses wrong because a CB usually has backup in the form of a safety. Safety is the last line of defense. If he guesses wrong its likely going to be a TD for the opposing offense.

Look for the Jags to trade back, not once, but maybe twice.

The giants sit around #15 and want Rolando Mcclain (49ers, and Miami pick before them) so, they might be willing to move ahead of those guys to snag him.

Also, 49ers like Joe Haden, they could to want to move up.

sooner or later the patriots will jump up to get a player “they cant pass on”. What if they trade all 3 of their 2nd round picks and a 1st round pick to get Suh? I highly doubt it.. but do you get what im saying?

I don't know about Brunell as a player

but I sure hope as soon as he retires, he’s hired by the Jags in some capacity. If he retired after this year and was hired by the Jags or teamed up with Boselli in getting fans back in the seats at the same time drafting Tebow in the second or third round, might just be the jumpstart Wayne Weaver needs to fill the stands. Follow all that with a playoff team next year and life would be good!

I’ve been a Florida State fan for almost 40 years, so my comments about the Jags drafting Tebow in a lower round for public relations purposes doest come from a biased position. It cracks me up when someone who doesn’t have much to say, except negative, unsuccessful attempts at humor. I hope things get better in your life so you don’t feel such a need to spread your negative remarks. I’m just curious, who is your college team?

We're on the same page...

I just think a 5th, 4th, and maybe even a 3rd round pick would be worth it just for the buzz it would bring to the team. I don’t think he is the future QB for the Jags but he would make the team in some capacity. Probably would be a special team warrior at least.

i think CP7 (ponder) will be ther best QB for us to draft next year unless he gets hurt again!

He is a more mobile (in the pockit) and accurate then DG or tim tebow will ever bee.
