Jaguars Final Draft Summary at SBN's MockingtheDraft.com

After a tedious 7th round mock draft performed at MockingtheDraft.com, it is over at least for now. I inherited the job as representative of the Jaguars after the 3rd round. I hope to be the representative again when the next mock draft comes.

Representatives came from other SBN blogs and where fans of their teams. I offer thanks to AngelsColts and JP 23, Colt and Dolphin fans respectively. More over the Jump.

Trades:

    - Jaguars 4th round pick for the Vikings 5th, 6th, and 7th

    - Jaguars 6th round pick (from Minn) for the Dolphins' two 7th round picks

Jaguars Final Draft Summary

1st – (Lysol's Pick) Dez Byrant, WR, Oklahoma State (#2 WR starter immediantely). For More info, click here

3rd – (Socalstites' Pick) Tony Pike, QB, Cincy (Backup and apparant Heir when Garrard retires or leaves). For More Info, click here

5th – Dexter Mccluster, Speed Demon/RB/WR, Ole Miss (Best Value there). For More Info, click here

5th – Barry Church, SS, Toledo (Great prospect for saftey and should help a horrid pass D). For More Info, click here

6th - C.J. Wilson, DE, East Carolina (Best DE in my mind left, could develop into something). For More Info, click here

7th - John Estes, OC, Hawaii (I needed to address Center and get some depth and new blood in the interior). For More Info, click here

7th - Clinton Snyder, OLB, Stanford (With Clint Ingram being pushed out, Adding competition would be great). For More Info, click here

7th - Armanti Edwards, ATH/QB, Appalachian State (With no other holes to fill except Punter, I went with a fun guy who we could try out and gain rights to). For More Info, click here

UDFA:
Zoltan Mesko, Punter, Michigan (To finally beat out Podlesh). For more info, click here

John Fletcher, DE, Wyoming (Depth and competition at DE) For more info, click here

Best Pick:                                 Best Need Pick:                            Best ??? Pick:

S31tig5_medium             2573290_medium            Qvcgzvfgmyccgue

Dexter Mccluster                            C.J. Wilson                                       Barry Church

My personal Grade for this draft:

B, Dez Byrant is not a need and shouldn't have been selected thus drops the grade down a letter. Drafting defensive players later instead of earlier also hurt. However, getting Mccluster and others were big.

First two picks killed it for me. Not bad, though, because the 5th round looks nice. So I gave it a C. Really, I’d like to see us trade down in the first if one of the really good players isn’t still on the board (Haden, maybe?). Can’t wait to see the next one.

(jokingly) No Tebow? Sinner. :P

Mccluster is a steal there

Oike is Ok-I would take him; but he made me worry in the senior bowl(he is just a backup QB until 2-3 years…)
Braynt-uhm-He looks fine; but I would taken there the best aviable D player.
And I would pick a DE earlier then the 6th round:
Mesko is a great catch
Grade: C

Like the draft would take a BAP D pick in the first round because it is our most glaring need right now all in all Job well done Grade B – (ps if dan is avail I like him for QB more so then Pike)

this mock is bullshit

no way mccluster is there past 2nd round, and no way pike is either. ive seen pike play in person, zoltan, so let someone who knows anything about the player speak. Pike will be a Good NFL QB with his size and smarts. his arm strength will improve, its not bad, and could take a team to a super bowl someday.

by harveyismyboy on Feb 1, 2010 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, here's why this draft is a little outdated
the 5th round started during the Senior Bowl Practices

No one knew how good he (Mccluster) was until midway into the practices. So it was a steal.

I’ll try to do better

Don't worry about it, Teal

You did fine. Almost everyone is going to have an opposing idea. It’s a mock. It’s guess. You guessed your best with the info you had at the time. I still guess we’ll draft Tebow at some point. I guess that will piss some people off. I guess you can’t make everyone happy.

Yo Viator

what are your top 5 QB’s in order?

by Ewdtrey on Jan 30, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

Bradford, Tebow (homer), Lefevour, Claussen, Pike

I’m the wrong one to ask, honesty. I have a lot to learn about football still. I tend to pick with my heart and not my head. So, it’s a good thing I’m not a scout. How about you?

Vae Victis!

by viator on Jan 30, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

To deepen the 'honesty' (*I meant honestly above)

I don’t know jack about any of these guys except Bradford, Tebow, and Pike. The rest, I suppose, are on my mind through the power of suggestion.

Vae Victis!

by viator on Jan 30, 2010 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly

I’m having trouble picking. I don’t like most of them this year.
I tell you what though, I’m surprised by how many people still have Bradford ranked as a top 2 QB.
I can tell you who I don’t like:
Clausen- Because I don’t like him. Not sure why. It’s demeanor or something. Not saying he wont be a good QB eventually. Need to go over some more old games to get a better feel on him.
Lefevour- Doesn’t really stand out to me, but he looks like Josh McCown to me.
Pike- Really looked weak out there. But I’ve seen him throw some stick throws before. Never really thought of him as being 1st rounder, but I always considered him to be underrated, therefore I figured he would have value if we drafted him sometime after the 1st. Probably my favorite in the draft, but he will have to sit behind Garrard to learn the system and get mature physically some more.
Tebow- Honestly I wouldn’t draft him"." (Period) Not at any position. Not FB, LB, H-Back, TE.
I probably have Bradford at 2 behind Pike. Just have no idea how he plays with a rush in his face. And I haven’t seen enough intermediate throws from him to know if he will succeed.
In closing, I need to do more research. I’ll get back to this soon.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 30, 2010 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

I worry about Pike and Bradford

From a durability standpoint. They’re both so skinny. I wouldn’t be mad if we picked Bradford, I can tell ya that. On Clausen, is it the Notre Dame thing? I know a lot of people (football fans) who dislike ND.

No doubt, Tebow hasn’t helped himself today. Anyone can see that. However, I still believe in him. We’re looking at one week of tear down and rebuild. He’ll take time. There is obviously a ton he has to work on. But I also believe in DG. So, he’d have at least 2 years in my estimation. Again, I’m passion driven and still in the infant stage as a football fan (at least from a knowledge of the game perspective). Thanks for your input. You’re a sharp fella. I’m looking forward to your future analysis of the position.

Vae Victis!

by viator on Jan 30, 2010 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s his arrogance, and eventual failure at the college level. He arrived at ND declaring himself the savior (literally), then failed miserably.

by Kbot on Jan 30, 2010 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt his heart

I remember him suffering a sucker-punch, with no word of a counter. Every man gets punched eventually, I suppose the reaction is down to instinct. For me, you best expect a knee and headbutt as your consolation prize.

I expect a little more fire from a man. Although, I suppose, Tim would turn the other cheek. Can’t say I agree with every Christian parable. I like the OT, maybe I’m more Jewish than any other religious affiliation.

I think the better way to put it is that he’s a little bitch. Yup, that’s basically what I think of Jimmy Clausen: a little bitch.

by Kbot on Jan 31, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

its not the ND thing

When I went to ND the fans there were extremely accomodating.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 31, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

What college team(s) do you like? (There's nothing in your profile)

My early mentor (the man who taught me about God, football, and painting), was an Alabama fan. He despised ND, from his stance he had good reasoning. At the time of the teaching, I only cared to learn about painting (money). But the rest remained in my subconscious, and are now reemerging as my interests in the subjects grow.

what about Tim Hiller?

I think he’s a super sleeper for us. He’s got a canon for an arm that can make any throw, seems to have great anticipation and timing, 6-5 230lbs, graduate student with a 4.0 grade point average, won the Wuerffel Trophy for exemplary community service with academic and athletic achievement… there seems to be a lot to love.

As far as I know, he’s not really mobile, and only steps up into the pocket. He’s torn both ACL’s, but he also played though pain in last three games of the 2008 before treatment for that second one made him miss spring 09. I’m not sure if that’s a problem going forward, or a bonus because he’ll have time to heal if we draft him and at least we know he’s tough.

Based on the few games I 1/2 watched and highlights/lowlights I think most of his mental mistakes can be corrected; I saw interceptions from throwing the ball up (which he can learn not to do) rather than bad reads, and it’s not like he had a lot to work with.

What am I missing? Isn’t this exactly the kind of guy we’re looking for later in the draft?

by JagSoldier on Jan 31, 2010 6:59 AM EST reply actions

He's going to get snapped in half in the NFL

That’s always been the concern about him and he didn’t really shake off those doubts in the BCS Championship. He’s also a Big 12 QB which has been bust central for a long time. The defenses are really weak and make small QBs like Graham Harrell and Colt McCoy look good.

Plus

He never looked that impressive against the best big 12 defenses, which are about as good as an average defense in some other conferences. Oklahoma cleaned his clock.

Colt

I am a bit of a homer (I go to Texas), but I think McCoy would be a good mid-round pick. I agree his size might be a bit of a problem (although he is a good bit bigger than Brees, and taller than Garrard), but i think its misleading to say he is injury prone. He was incredibly durable, especially given the time he spent as as the team’s top runner in 2008. He was a 4 year starter and put up good numbers (yards, TD’s, wins) in a pro-style offense in a tough conference. If the jags are looking to draft a QB in the mid rounds, they could do alot worse than McCoy (I also like LeFevour here)…

I hate to be a downer...

but if this is how the Jags draft plays out, I will be really disappointed. The first 3 rounds are weak at best and I realize different people were doing the drafting. If we take a so called #2 receiver in the first round and an average QB in the the 3rd, our improvement will be stunted just when it’s was starting to make progress.

Kyle Wilson

I would almost bet some serious money that we trade down into the high 20’s to try and grab Wilson to replace Mathis(when he goes down injured) and to fill in on nickel package plays until then. From there I am lost on who we would take next…It all depends on what we get for trading down…

by flint on Feb 2, 2010 9:01 PM EST reply actions

I really like

Wilson’s feet and hips and even speed, but his lack of ball skills kind of drops him a little on my board. He adjust to the ball alright, but he has horrible hands. Turnovers are how CB’s in the league have to live now. They can’t survive if they don’t scare QB’s with the threat of a turnover.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 3, 2010 4:20 AM EST up reply actions

Really?

I know I am a few days removed from getting a good conversation going on this. But, seriously a WR in the first and then a guy that will have to sit for a least a year. So NO improvement on the defense until when???? (yes, this deserves 4 question marks). That means we have a 50% chance for another first round bust (WR will never be taken in the first round with us, ever). If I am wrong, I will admit it. Then a QB that made Timmy look good at the senior bowl. No. This is not a way for the team to win now, which is what we need. Not the biggest Jack fan but not every new coach is going to take us to the playoffs and not a lot of rookie QBs go there either. Trade a 4th? the last place you might find a starter? Sorry, the draft needs to happen. I am getting anxious and trying to start a debate here. Sorry if i yelled.

by J-Villain on Feb 4, 2010 9:32 AM EST reply actions

Hey the draft

isn’t the only place you can improve a team. Keep in mind Jeremy Mincey and Reggie Hayward will probably be back so that will greatly help the pass rush. And I think Starks was underrated as a NB, a position that was exposed the last time we played the Colts, amongst a lot of other games. There will also be improvement from the rookies and young players in general. Lastly, an improved offense can help a defense as well as help carry a bigger burden.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 4, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Sigh

You don’t have to tell me, I didn’t pick Dez Bryant, Lysol did. I would of loved to get a Defensive guy in the first but i didn’t get to rep the team till the 4th round.
