Senior Bowl Thoughts

The Jaguars are a team full of a couple glaring needs on defense, but a quarterback, late round reciever, defensive tackle (preferably later round), defensive end, saftey, back up running back, guard/center, and possibly another corner.  Basically for the 10' Jaguars anything goes.  So in this case I give my thoughts on the senior Bowl.

-Zac Robinson had a fantastic first pass to another guy who has had a good game or Jeremy Williams out of Tulane, who looks to be a great late round guy.  But a nice hard spiral that was well trhown deep.

- Taylor Mays looks like Sean Taylor, but even though he has a pick he tackles like Reggie Nelson, so hes a no no draft pick.  Larry Asante, the saftey from Nebraska just gave up a touchdown pass that was well thrown to Collin Peek the tight end by guess who? Zac Robinson.  I'm really liking what I'm seeing from him.  He should get some more time in the second half.

- Ben Grahman the defense end did a great job, looked like Dwight Freeney.  Also the Tennesse DT, who Kris Jenkins supported in the halftime show looked really solid, and could probably be a 2nd-3rd round pick.

- Speaking of safteys, one guy who was all over the field in the first half was Terrence Skinner from University of Maryland.  He made sound tackles and was probably the opposite of Reggie Nelson. Myron Rolle on the other hand looked smaller then I remembered.

-Tim Tebow just verfied to me that he will not be a good quarterback.  He threw the ball weakly, which is also was concerning for Tony Pike who played well, but did not throw the ball too well.  On the other hand Robinson and Jared Brown threw the ball very hard but in the case of Brown he overthrew many revievers.

- Mike Upati, the highly coveted guard from Idaho, did not look that good.  He held on many occasions and did not play that well.   I was not that impressed.

-Marty Gillard showed sparks of speed, but he should be gone before any Jaguar pick, and is not good enough to be there first round pick.

- Linebackers Sean Witherspoon and Washington out of Texas Tech looked very good in the game.

-Dekota Watson did a great job just chasing down the Fresno State running back Miller. I liked Miller until he was stopped on forth and one.

-Theres Graham again.  Jezz this kid is everywhere.

-Andre Roberts a great catch.  He has some impressive speed.   Great throw by Robinson again.  I really like this kid.

- Graham again.  Sack and a force fumble.  Robinson shouldve gotten rid of the ball.

-My high school was just on a Under Armour commerical, and we're a public school.

- LeFevour had his first pass tipped.  Almost intercepted by Patrick Robinson.  Speaking of Patrick Robinson, hes another guy whos been all over the field.  LeFevour I was excited to see, but he looks a little too small.

- Wow.  Arenas had a really beautiful return.  But he ran out of speed.  Decent corner.  But still a great return.

-Robinson a bit behind on the pass.  Then hits another pass to Julius Williams ruled incomplete, but it was definately completed.  Jacoby Ford a nice return.  I'm liking the option that Robinson gives as a 3rd-5th round draft pick.

-LeGarret Blount just seems to lack NFL Speed along with some other of the backs in the game.  But he just trucked the safety Coleman on the run.  That was impressive.

-Nice scramble by LeFevour, getting a first down.  Throws a short one on a play action pass, but thats what hes used to.

-I just think LeFevour is too small.  The only two QB's I like in this game are Pike and Robinson, and maybe Jarred Brown.   They are the only ones that seem to possess the "zip" that good QB's have.

-Unfortunately Tim Tebow is back in at quarterback.  Ben Graham almost sacked him.  Wow.  I REALLY like Graham.

-Larry Asante had a great hit forcing a fumble, but he goofed big time on the earlier touchdown.

-Good catch by the Jacoby Ford, but a penalty call brings it back.

-Gilyard makes a deep reception.  But I think that it was more a week coverage.  The corner Linely had poor reaction.   I disagree with Mike Mayock and Charles Davis.  Both of them seem to think LeFevour will be a good 2nd or 3rd round pick, which i disagree with.

- Dekota Watson does a great job penetrating the offensive line and stopping the 3rd down run.  Taylor Mays is getting exciting about hitting a QB.  I'm not liking Mays that much either.

-Nice run by Ben Tate.  Got a nice back from the multi postion Bynes.  I like Bynes as a center replacement to Meester for Jacksonville.

-Jeremy Williams again.  This kid has been really consistant today as a wide reviever.  Like him too. However, he just dropped a pass.

-Tebow just fumbled.  Koha Misi, a linebacker from Utah had a nice play on the ball.  As I predicted, Tim Tebow will not be able to run in the NFL.

-Gilyard just burned Arenas for a touchdown, and LeFevour threw a nice pass.  Still hes small and lacking that "zip".  If Gilyards aviablable in the 2nd round (with a Jacksonville trade) or the third I would take him.

- Tebow fumbled again.  Then dumped it off for a yard.  I really dont like him.  Ben Graham pressured Tebow.  3 and out.

- I think LeFevour will be a solid backup QB.  Nothing more though.

-Correction: its Bradnon Graham, reminds me ALOT of Dwight Freeny.  I would take him with the 10th or 11th pick.  But i have a feeling he'll be available later.

-Robinsons back in, and the ball slipped out but recovers his fumble.  Jeremy Williams another 1st down catch.  He's having a fantastic day.

-Robinson took off, and Brandon Graham chased him down for a 5 yard game.  Graham showed some speed.  Nice Screen.  Robinson is putting together a nice drive. Though he was just intercepted by Witherspoon.  Not a good decision by Robinson.

- Jared Brown to Jeremy Williams.  Notice another pass to Jeremy Williams.  This guy is a late round reciever that seems like a Gene Smith guy.

- Another interception.  And the North takes a knee.  Guess who was the MVP? Brandon Graham.

If I could take just players from this draft from this game for the Jaguars heres what I would do:

First Round: Trade down select DE Ben Graham.

Second Round (aquired in trade): CB Patrick Robinson

Third Round: LB Dakota Washington

Fourth Round: C/G USC's Byers

Fifth Round: QB Zac Robinson

Sixth Round: WR Jeremy Williams

Seventh Round: S Terrance Skinner

Decent summary

Including the bit on Tebow.

I can't agree with that

He’s certainly not going to make an impact on the field year 1 as a QB. He’s a project at best. But I still believe he has value. There is a lot to the guy. I’m not lobbying for us to snag him in the first round. But I like him.

I like him also… but it reaffirmed that he’s not a 1st rd pick. I’d be happy if we picked him up in the 3rd though, just not sure if his intangibles will allow him to get beyond the 2nd. Team like Patriots with tons of picks in the 2nd would probably snag him and I’d be ok with that as well. It’d be great for Tim to learn from a QB like Brady… just don’t go to the Colts please!

Wow

My thoughts exactly. Just don’t let him go to a team in the AFC South, not to a team I loathe. I’d have a total system meltdown. It would be a paradox for me.

I've been long thinking the best place for Tebow

is in the Titans backfield. Now hear me out. Yeah they already have Young. But…
Let me ask you this question: What’s the number 1 reason they don’t run the spread option in the NFL. According to Vic, and I agree with this, a QB a is too valuable to have him run that often. In other words you’d need a couple of Vince Youngs. Or….yup, Young and Tebow
Then mix in a lot of Chris johnson. WOW! You suddenly have an option game that could work in the NFL. They have the OL to do it and these NFL defenses are not made to stop option offenses.
Can you imagine having Tebow, Young, and CJ all being either blockers, which Tebow could excel at or decoys or superb runners like Young and CJ or short yardage backs like Tebow and VY can be. The options would be endless adding in the pass.
Not to mention the popularity that backfield would have.

Really?

I’d love for one of our rivals to throw away one of their draft picks. Ha ha ha…

Hah!

Have you seen the Mancrunch commercial CBS turned down? It’s hilarious!

It reminds me of the first football game I watched with you. Man, that was awkward. Sorry I fell asleep.

I'm confused

From what I gather, Tebow is going to struggle to be a quality QB in the NFL at all. Why waste ANY pick on him if the idea is to get someone who is going to be better than Garrard?

Even if you wanted him to convert to some other position as part of the project, I would not waste anything above a 4th or 5th round pick. Knighton and Cox were 3rd round picks… I don’t see a comparison between those two and Tebow in terms of skill and production from day 1.

by KeithG on Jan 31, 2010 8:11 AM EST up reply actions

My theory would be

That eventually he would be better than DG…with time. David is fine for now. Throw Brunnel into the mix, and BAM! Best possible scenario.

The student should always surpass the instructor. Don’t you watch kung-fu movies?

Vae Victis!

by viator on Jan 31, 2010 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

Well, it's a theory

But right now I cannot see Tebow ever getting better than David. Comparing “QB things”:

Mechanics : Garrard is MUCH better

Read Defenses : Garrard is so much better, they can’t be compared. Granted, Tebow still needs to learn this part of the game.

Make all the throws : Garrard can make more throws, with more “zip”.

Pocket presence : Garrard is better.

Garrard is the better runner, although i think Tebow is probably quicker.

Quite frankly, it looks like wishful thinking (to me) that Tebow will get to better than Garrard. Right now, Garrard is better in every facet of the position… and some of those “problems” with Tebow are potentially catastrophic (that throwing motion is a recipe for disaster with any vaguely decent pass rush).

I’m not trying to come out sounding like I don’t want a better QB than Garrard, because I do. But, I want someone who is MILES better (or has the potential to be), not someone who is a nice guy and MAY eventually be AS good/bad as Garrard. People are always comparing Garrard, unfavourably, with Manning. So be it, if that is the benchmark…. Tebow is nowhere.

by KeithG on Jan 31, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

Well, it's a theory

Right now, I think Tebow needs 2 or 3 years of development to be anywhere close to as good/bad as Garrard is… and that’s if he can somehow change his throwing mechanics. Not my idea of an upgrade.

I have nothing against Tebow, and I hope he does well somewhere. I just don’t want to be taking unneccesary chances with this draft. And I do want a QB that is going to be a massive upgrade on Garrard, not someone who can possibly do the same thing…. in 3 years time.

by KeithG on Jan 31, 2010 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

I gotcha, but in the spirit and trend of redundancy...

Maybe you missed the part where I said he’d eventually surpass his teacher. Which is to say, I feel, he has the potential to be better than Garrard. We aren’t going to draft a QB that is better than DG immediately, at least not this year. There is no such beast in this draft, they’ll all need to develop skill and/or ass (gain weight and muscle). Three years is the easy part. I maintain that with that kind of time for learning and development, Tim will surpass even my expectations (which are admittedly lofty). You don’t have to agree, but you’ll need a time machine to convince me otherwise right now. So, give it time, you’ll either be proven correct or wrong (with obvious emphasis on the latter). And you have nothing but time, what else are you gonna do? Just watch.

:)

The problem for me is this: if I am correct and you are wrong…. we’ve not just wasted a 2010 draft pick, but have possibly lost the chance to replace David with a true franchise QB before it’s too late for David to be “teacher” of that replacement.

I don’t see what you are basing your lofty expectations on, as I see no evidence of this happening. But, I daresay you have seen more Tebow than I have and you may well be correct.

On a side note (and I am genuinely interested), if you would care to tell me what evidence you are basing your expectations on, I’d be absolutely willing to pay attention to that evidence :)

Haha

I have none, but hope. It’s all in the heart. I want him to do well, and believe he will. No more, no less. That’s the truth of the matter. It is far more likely that you are correct than I. I also want what you want…someone who will be an awesome a QB. A Manning of our own, if you will. I assure, I will support the QB that we do draft.

I just like Tim. The debate is what I’ve truly been enjoying. Do you notice how it gets so many people fired up? You expose a weakness, a chink in your armor, when you allow a subject to worry it’s way under skin. I’m more or less toying with the exposed flanks of those that have been the most onerous on the matter. Tim Tebow has been the most fun that I’ve had in an off-season.

I like the guy

and every time I see him or listen to him talk I expect some kind of miracle from him or something, but then when I watch him play, especially in the pocket, I become dismayed. I may sound like I’m being hard on the guy, but I do really want him to succeed. I just don’t think he has what it takes physically.
I watch him play and think to myself every single good play he makes Garrard would have done better. More zip. Quicker decisions. More power when he runs. More accurate on short and intermediate throws. Better mechanics and pocket presence, no that Garrard’s pocket presence is great either. Garrard is significantly better under pressure and in a tight pocket.
And the crazy thing is, I like Garrard, but even I agree we could use an upgrade there; and yet I see nothing from Tebow that makes me think he will be a better QB.

He is a highly motivated guy, and a decent ahtlete. But he is, in my opinion, at least 3 or 4 years of serious development away from being half as good as Garrard, who isn’t that great to begin with. Are we so hyped about the PERSON that we don’t actually care about his talent/skill-set at the position he is playing? Hell, if that’s the case…. I’m a decent guy too :)

What you wanted in our Draft

First Round: Trade down select DE Ben Graham. If you mean Brandon Graham from Michigan, then sure.

Second Round (aquired in trade): CB Patrick Robinson Looked Great

Third Round: LB Dakota Washington I think you could get him in the 4th but oh well.

Fourth Round: C/G USC’s Byers I love this guy, Great run blocking

Fifth Round: QB Zac Robinson Instead of him, I rather have John Skelton, Fordham

Sixth Round: WR Jeremy Williams Very Interesting WR, I like.

Seventh Round: S Terrance Skinner Sure.

I think if we were to draft

a CB in the second round, Gene would probably rather draft either Parrish Cox, or Donovan Warren.(Assuming Kyle Wilson isn’t available) Both of those guys are taller lankier guys. (Which brings me to another point that I don’t think Haden would be the pick at 10 if he were there. I see some serious weaknesses in his game that were masked by a pretty good front 7)
Skelton is a nice prospect.
Jeremy Williams is such a smooth receiver.

personally i dont think corner is an area of need with brackenridge, cox, and Mathis

I do think we can use some serious

depth at CB. I like Tyron. He’s a try hard guy that isn’t as much a liability as you would think consider how he was acquired and how bad our pass rush was. But we don’t have a very good NB and Mathis wont be young forever. If need be, we could always move one of them to FS.
