I am sure that these comments were discussed in other pieces on this site today, but I just can not force myself to read through all the fire Jack, fire Gene, and start Snoopy or Charlie Brown at QB against Dallas. The two things really bothered me yesterday put us in a bad situation, occurred on the same play, and directly led to a KC TD.
For the second time this season, Mike Thomas fumbled a punt return. The worst part of this was we had just shut the Chiefs down, and were about to have great field position. I read all the time about who is our #1 or #2 receiver, and its usually a battle between MSW and Mike Thomas. Well until Mike T. can hold onto the football better, I do not even think he should be in the running.
And as if the fumble wasn't bad enough, it would have been an easy recovery for additional yardage if not for the genius effort of the two Jags that thought they could pick it up and run with it. The combined effort of 3 members of our punt return team, Mike Thomas, and the two Jags that tried to pick it up, quite possibly were responsible for a 14 point swing in the score yesterday, and a 10 point swing at the least. If the Chiefs would not have scored at that point of the game, the entire dynamic of the day would have been different, with us having a half time lead most likely!
It is fundamental football to 1) hold onto the football better, and 2) do not try to advance a fumble, simply secure it. The second is not a mistake we should ever see at the NFL level, and I expect more out of Mike Thomas. Both of Mike's return fumbles have led to near immediate scores by opposing teams. I hope we do not see a third version of this disaster yet this year.
