Better Know Your Doppelgangers: Ask Battle Red Blog
Hey Jacksonville fans, my name is TexansDC, and I am a writer over at your friendly neighborhood Battle Red Blog. Jonathan was kind enough to set one of these up at BRB, so I thought I would return the favor here at BCC for the upcoming "Dead Coach Walking" Bowl (h/t to Loesche on the name). Right now, I'll take the time to answer some commonly asked questions.
- The Texans have the worst secondary in the league. They can't cover tight ends nor defend a deep pass. Fans weep for a free safety regularly.
- Gary Kubiak is on the hot seat. No one will be satisfied until we have blood.
- Houston's as inconsistent as ever. No one knows which team will show up from half to half.
- Arian Foster is outstandingly awesome, but the coaches don't tend to call his number as often as they should.
All that said, fire away with any questions you have about the Texans, and someone will try their best to answer. Who is ready for a roller coaster ride on Sunday?

What's been the biggest reason the Texans have struggled lately?
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
It'll depend on who you ask...
Some people will blame the coaching since they don’t run the ball with Arian Foster enough. They feel as if Foster would’ve ran wild in Indy and could’ve converted all the 3rd and shorts against San Diego.
Some blame the porous defense who can’t cover, tackle, or generate a pass rush. Those fans don’t think the offense should have to score 30+ to win because the defense gives up TDs in the red zone. There’s not a single fan who can say one nice thing about defensive coordinator Frank Bush.
The offense gets some blame….the line couldn’t stop Dwight Freeney in Indy nor could they score TDs against the Chargers (2 TDs in 6 red zone appearances).
There’s truth in all of these reasons really. You don’t become an inconsistent .500 team without having a few issues.
"Lord, beer me strength."
1) defense
2) Our offense could overcome the defense, but some questionable play calling has stood in the way of our offense living up to their full potential.
I want to make them beautiful, but they always turn out WRONG! That one... too fat! This one... too tall! This one... too symmetrical!
3) defense.

LOL...
I was reading your intro, and except for a few name changes i thought i was reading about our team there for a minute lol….
but seriously, whats with shaube this year, seems more inconsistant than ever? is he not getting the time in the pocket?
WE ARE JAGUARS.......FEAR OUR ROAR!!!!!!
There are times (Washington, Kansas City)
where Schaub looks like the QB he was last season, but yeah…the line has allowed a ton of pressure and sacks. Another problem is that he seems to focus on one or two targets, and he’s forcing the ball into double and triple coverage.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Our our recievers not getting open?
I want to make them beautiful, but they always turn out WRONG! That one... too fat! This one... too tall! This one... too symmetrical!
Watching
Schaub this season really reminds me of Carson Palmer. In fact your entire offense resembles their offense. Both have a plethora of Wr’s, but no one can pass block enough for a QB to get to a second read. They both run block well, but don’t run it enough; even if your schemes are completely different.
Schaub is playing it safe until it’s do or die time; when he would do better just to go for the kill shot.
Do you guys still feel like this is your year?
Now that you’re 4-4, do you think the team is still gonna have that “We can make it this year” kind of energy boost or not necessarily.
Also, it seemed like last year Mario Williams was playing like a man on fire, yet now you’re saying the team can’t generate pass rush. What happened there?
The energy, at least from the fanbase, is gone.
Squandering a great 2-0 start has left everyone deflated. The players believe, but the fans are talking draft and coaching changes.
The pass rush’s biggest problem is that Shaun Cody starts at DT. There’s a real lack of inside push so when Williams and Antonio Smith force a QB to step up….no one’s there. Mario’s also disappeared really and isn’t taking over games as he used to. The loss of DE Connor Barwin has hurt the pass rush a lot more than people thought.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Hysteria has set in for most
people are now predicting a 6 or 7 win season for us.
I want to make them beautiful, but they always turn out WRONG! That one... too fat! This one... too tall! This one... too symmetrical!
If you could have one player on your team from this year's Jacksonville squad, who would it be?
Please exclude MJD. ;)

I'll take Daryl Smith
He’s been under the radar, but he’s one of the league’s better LBs….and Houston could use a LB this season.
"Lord, beer me strength."
A good DT is needed
but I’ve just always liked Daryl Smith and thought him definitely underrated.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Yeah, that's true
Just ask Michael Irvin, lines definitely worked for him

Alualu or Kampman.
Maybe Knighton, but at this point with how bad the secondary is, I need all my linemen to be able to get a pass rush.

It seems to me that Cushing has lost a step after returning from his suspension.....
I know that you lost DeMeco for the year and he switched over to MLB. How has he been being the defensive captain and how would you rate his performance overall compared to last year?
frankDUBZ aka Frank Silba
"I'm smacking you with the truth......" - Me
It's a small sample size of Cushing at MLB...
but he improved from the Indy game to last Sunday. I expect more improvement on Sunday. He has looked a bit sluggish out there, but I, and speaking on only my behalf, always thought he’d need 4 games to get back to speed after the suspension. Again….Sunday is the game where I’ll really be watching. I know his role is different, but I still expect the rust to be gone for good.
"Lord, beer me strength."
What is the status of your Offensive line?
General skill, injuries, or dramatic changes?
"I’m going to punish him. If he hits me, fine, but if I catch him, believe me, I’m going to get the better shot." - Fred Taylor
Personnel wise, The Texans signed FA LG Wade Smith in the offseason, and he’s a starter who ProFootballFocus says is having an All-Pro year.
The big change is health. Unlike a year ago, the line’s been healthy. C Chris Myers is healthy (had an ankle injury last year) and looks to be the best overall lineman, IMO. RG Mike Brisiel has returned from last year’s IR trip to be a mauler inside.
The run blocking, as evidenced by Arian Foster and Derrick Ward, is much better. For whatever reason, the pass blocking isn’t. Duane Brown and Eric Winston are struggling at the edges with speed. Winston is really having problems with blitz pick-up. Aaron Kampman could have a good day because of this.
"Lord, beer me strength."
If I could...
I’d mix-and-match. Arian Foster and MJD would make a great 1-2 combination while I think we could build a somewhat decent defense by taking the best of both defenses….Mario, AK, Alualu/Knighton, and Antonio Smith with Cushing and Smith at the LB?
Gun to my head, I’d pick the Texans…simply because the pass offense is better. Plus, I <3 Andre.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Offensively, the Texans
Without a doubt. Defensively, the Jaguars. I know they’re not an elite defensive team, but it’s about ten steps ahead of the Texans.
"...and Kareem Jackson will fall down..."
They're both terrible defensively
I wouldn’t be surprised if both teams score over 30 points each.
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
Which Texan do you think will have the most impact on the result of game?
"I’m going to punish him. If he hits me, fine, but if I catch him, believe me, I’m going to get the better shot." - Fred Taylor
Gary Kubiak
When he remembers Arian Foster is back there…good things happen. When he throws three times for every run called or lets Derrick Ward do sweeps and pitches then the Texans offense will collapse like David Carr under a 3-man rush.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Buh-zing!
I like how you’re still making David Carr jokes. We still make fun of Leftwich here sometimes, too.
by Brian Levenson on Nov 9, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions
I will never not make fun of David Carr...
or his perfectly combed hair, his love of mittens, and his weird Boba Fett 49er helmet.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Schaub or Foster
One of them is usually hot each game. Schaub seems to throw one WTF ARE YOU DOING kind of pick ever game, but he’s been pretty good about it lately.
"...and Kareem Jackson will fall down..."
It usually one or the other, never both
Schaub doesn’t do well when Foster has a big game cause it throws off his rhythm, & Foster doesn’t get enough touches when Schaub develops a good passing rhythm

Usually
one opens up the other. Truth is they’ve faced some teams that on defense are one dimensional. The Colts can’t stop the run, but are great against the pass despite numbers. The Skins on the other hand are horrible against the pass and good against the run.
Part of the problem in the passing game is that their mentality is not to attack when the run game is going well. It gets too conservative and so the passing game struggles.
Chris Brown.
Shit, wait.

So if you get a new coach....
Who do you want? Want to keep Wade in state? :)
by Slawsc on Nov 9, 2010 9:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Some people are calling for Wade as DC
I can’t tell if their joking or not. But I like the Carolina defensive coordinator, John Fox. There were some other options, but Fox seemed the best in my opinion.
"...and Kareem Jackson will fall down..."
I have a friend who will take it to the grave
that Wade makes a really good Coordinator, but a really bad coach.

If there's a coaching change...
I’ll be driving the John Fox Bandwagon.
This franchise has never seen anything above a mediocre defense…I’d want a defensive guy. Given the inability to develop a defensive back, I’d want a guy with that in his background. Also, I want a guy who is a proven winner…John Fox has all of those qualities…and I don’t think he’d tinker too much with the offense either. Seeing his defense produce still, despite losing major talent, only adds fuel to that fire.
How about you, which bandwagon will you sit in should JDR get the axe?
"Lord, beer me strength."
I'd wanta
steal Harbaugh from Stanford. Or get some new blood, like the special teams coach in Tampa Richard Bisaccia or Chuck Cecil/Mike Munchak in TEN. I also like Jerry Gray the Secondary coach for the Seahawks and Mike Mularkey the OC for the Falcons.
Pretty significant BRB factions for Fox, Sean McDermott, and Gruden.
As well as some for Les Frasier, Gruden, Mike Zimmer.

Frasier
is overrated due to talent on his team. Gruden is more of a QB coach IMO. Sean hasn’t shown me much in terms of a play caller in comparison to his “teacher”. Zimmer is alright, but his scheme is a little too bland for me. I do really like Fox as DC.
It's not a strong crop, I agree
I personally am most interested in McDermott.

I'm driving the Herm Edwards for Houston HC bus, but there's one other name I'd throw out there
How about Ron Rivera? He’s been DC for in a 4-3 in Chicago when Hester & that defense dragged a Rex Grossman led offense kicking & screaming to a Super Bowl & currently coaching SD’s #1 ranked 3-4 defense. Herm Edwards as HC, Kyle Shanahan as OC, Ron Rivera as DC? Now that’s a coaching staff. Keep Joe Marciano as STC as that’s the only phase the Texans are consistent on.

For the most part
Frank Bush usually keeps a corner on the side of the field…and Kareem plays the left side. He’s typically drawn the #2 WR, but I’ve seen other guys line up against him.
"Lord, beer me strength."
And just to talk about his issues...
Kareem has flashes of good play, but he gets juked out of his shoes on a double-move…especially since opposing QBs often have the time to let these big plays develop. It wouldn’t be so bad if he had adequate safety help, but Eugene Wilson is terrible…so terrible…I mean, it’s torture watching Eugene Wilson play free safety.
"Lord, beer me strength."
If you can call that lining up.
