Which do I agree with and why? Why is one different from another?
Fire Del Rio
The devil we know: this is his 8th year; currently 65-62 pending final game. So basically a .500 record. Two years in the playoffs with a 1-2 record.
Most agree the roster was in decline when he took over. Poor drafting (for which he deserves some blame?) severely impacted the team's ability to improve. (Only 3 #1s remain, 2 start -- the last 2 -- for which he deserves some credit?)
Late season losing streaks to miss playoffs are a concern. However, the team has exceeded expectations last two years with a roster that is in major make-over. Had team unversally picked by "experts" to be bottom-dweller in contention for playoff berth going into final month last two years.
Has had a seemingly high turnover in coaching staff (don't know for sure, but that's my impression -- maybe it's standard throughout the league); but Weaver (perhaps with an assist from an unnamed GM) extended their contracts (to match remainder of JDR's contract through 2012?? not sure. does someone know?)
Seems that the roster is improving, but how much credit/blame does JDR deserve? The real results are between the lines. Is he responsible when someone grabs a face mask, falls down in coverage, misses a tackle, fails to field a kick? Has he "coached up" the team to get the best out of its talents? Has he "game planned" to take advantage of match ups? Has he challenged and encouraged? I have no idea.
The devil we don't know: Meet your new Jacksonville Jaguars head coach, (Please don't let it be Cowher or Gruden or Dikka or Spurrier or Johnson or anyone else who's already been an NFL head coach for any other team at any other time.)
Cut Garrard right now
The devil we know: type "Garrard" and "Big Cat Country" into Google search. When your head starts spinning too much, do something else for an hour. Repeat as necessary.
The devil we don't know: Meet your new Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback, (?)
Is he a rookie? Did we trade for someone (whose?) else's starter? Did we promote from the current roster? Did we find another team's backup? Did the (new) coach decide Zach Miller has starting NFL QB skills? What about Matt Jones? Maybe he's a better QB than wide receiver.
And finally, what about much-maligned (for no remotely justifiable reason) Wayne Weaver? Granted, we all know the guy's loaded and money is no object to him, heck, he even gives tons away to charities. But he does have about $100 million wrapped up in JDR (and assistants) and DG. $100 million -- that's a lot of money. He'd probably want to get a nice return on that investment.
So: keep 'em both; fire/cut 'em both; fire one, keep the other; keep one, cut the other?
Wayne usually has a sit-down with the head coach the day after the final game of the season, which looks like it could be Monday. We should have one of the answers then.
