Some Duck's Scouting Report: Jarrett Brown

                                           brownbigespn

Aight, let me start by introducing my new title. It used to be "Average Joe's," but I figured, new season coming up, new introduction. I'm glad the draft is quickly approaching. This is my favorite time of year, other than week 1 of the regular season. This scouting season I'm going to be doing mostly later round players who have potential to be starters/playmakers. Jonathan, Adam and Brian do a great job with the scouting reports, this is just a side contribution to add to the discussion.

Brown is viewed by many, and rightly so, as a project. Brown arrived at West Virginia the same year as the Big East household name Pat White. He red-shirted and waited a long four years on the bench as he watched White become a super star. With limited time in White's shadow, he caught the attention of some scouts, as he was on a pre-season watch list before the start of the 2009 season.

The Jaguars are viewed as needing a quarterback of the future. Two years ago Garrard was young going into his thirties, but after two years of leading the league in being knocked down, he can no longer be considered younger than his age suggests. The Jags need a plan for the future, yet have too many needs to worry about drafting a first round QB who will hold a clipboard. Brown is willing to learn and coachable, not to mention the athletic ability he brings to the table.

Video Killed the Scouting Report:

Jarrett Brown by the Numbers:

  • Height: 6"4"
  • Weight: 225

Because of Brown's status of a non top 64 pick, no "professional" scouting website has done a report of anykind on him. I've watched him a good deal, so I will give my thoughts on his strengths and weaknesses.

My report:

  • Brown is known to be coachable and willing to learn. Showed character when he stated he would do anything to help the team win during the time Pat White played at West Virginia.
  • Footwork needs coaching. Squares shoulders well on the run and when in the pocket, but his feet don't follow through as they should. Throws off his back foot too often, often resulting in floated passes down field. Even when stepping back he can still sling it. Makes one wonder what kind of a down field passer he could be with proper coaching.
  • Good arm strength, with perhaps room to expand with proper footwork. Puts mustard on short and intermediate throws. Throws the ball perhaps 70 yards.
  • Accuracy is great at times, lacks at others. Again it all goes back to footwork with Brown. When he swings his right foot over in his follow through, he is extremely accurate over the middle in the intermediate range.
  • Runs well. A great athlete, Brown is hard to bring down once defenders get hands on him. Looks like Vince Young when he runs. Not as much speed as Mike Vick, but runs smart and has good acceleration escaping the front of the pocket. Speedy enough to get away from most linebackers in the open field. Said to run a 4.6 forty, but some have reported a possible 4.5 coming at the combine. Known as a good basketball player.
  • Pocket presence will come with experience, as it continually got better as the season progressed.

Final Thoughts My Thoughts:

I like Brown. He's mobile, nice arm, and could have great accuracy with proper coaching. I'm not saying he is the next Brady or even Romo, but I am saying he has potential as a late round QB. To be honest, I wouldn't let him touch the field for two good years; but I feel the end result could be pleasing.

Nice report

I don’t want Brown though. As a WVU guy, I can’t take anymore. The inconsistency is maddening. He single handedly lost the Auburn game this year on interceptions on middle screens. PLURAL. How many times can one guy get picked on a freakin middle screen in one freakin game??? I thought you had to try to get picked on a middle screen one time, but to do it multiple times in one game… in one half…

Ha

I’m an Auburn fan. Really I just don’t see why the coaches kept calling it. Against other teams it may have worked, but Josh Bynes specializes in that sort of thing.

But like I said, just inexperience.

Everything about him is like

Tavaris Jackson: arms strength, ccuracy/inaccuracy, agility, size, mobility…
But I think he’s even further behind in development.

John Skelton/Fordham, or Robinson would be good

Eastern Washington?

Am I thinking of the right guy? If so, I’ll do one on him this weekend.

I took forever to get around to reading this

But I’m glad I finally did. This is good work.

Jarrett Brown reminds me a lot of Dennis Dixon. I think with some grooming he could become a solid player in the NFL.

Thanks

I agree, he plays like Dixon. I was a fan of Dixon when he was at Oregon as well; I just loved the way he played the college game. I still hold out hope the Jags will trade for him.

I like Brown as well. I think he could turn into a nice player with some time, without the high draft pick. He could be there in the fifth or even sixth.

He is a lot

like Dixon. A little more stout, but greener and more erratic. Similar smooth throwing motion though.

Yeah

I’m a huge Dixon fan. I almost wish the Jags would trade a third for him. Especially if we trade back in the first and gain some picks. The Steelers have no real need for Dixon. Roethlisberger is still young. The price shouldn’t be too high.

Yeah

but they may like Dixon as their primary backup. I think Batch may be losing it a bit with the injuries.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 17, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I didn’t finish my thought up top. If we offered a third for their backup, I’m sure they wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on that deal.
