Around SBN: The Pros and Cons of an 18-game NFL Schedule

Draft Breakdown is reporting the Jaguars were amongst the teams that were at Rutgers Pro Day. Although no specific players were mentioned, OT Anthony Davis would certainly be on the Jaguars radar.

In addition, Alabama LB Rolando McClain turned in a 4.74 40 yard dash at his Pro Day. Not great, not terrible. If he does drop, his 40 time won't be the reason.

I think he will be there

on #10. I think that is good news for us.

I believe

some of that film was from that game. He’s generally a good tackler, which looks good when watching a game. But when you break down his film, he looks pretty slow for a 43 MLB and he looks less physical than you would expect from a guy his size.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 10, 2010 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

He isn’t a thumper, and he isn’t nasty when he is second to the ball, as Brandon Spikes is. McClain is a good player, but I no longer think he is top ten talent.

Yeah

and a 4.74 at a pro day is usually like a 4.85 at the combine.

ewdtrey… i think a lot of folks don’t understand the entire meaning of BAP like we do… we should send ASK VIC over to their house and educate them properly… hehehe

gene said last night........

If an OT is on the top of the board, that is who they are taking……….

What else did he say?

And I would draft him too. Top ten OT’s wont be around anymore if we start winning consistently. Gotta get em stock piled right now. We need depth. We need people to push other players. We also need more linemen in general. People can be moved around to make em fit.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 10, 2010 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

He just reinforced the BAP philosophy......

and said you can’t not go by your board. Vic asked if taking an OT was out of the question since we took Monroe and Britton last year. Gene said absolutely not. I really respect him because he means and does exactly what he says. He is my kind of dude. He is high on Berry , Haden and Spiller just as we are……

He compared Haden....

to Ronde Barber, who also ran in the 4.6 range at the combine

personally, i’d rather have sean witherspoon. he’s faster, and i like his potential to get to the ball and lay a lick better.

i wonder what spikes will end up running. i’d guess somewhere around what mcclain did.

by abeaugh on Mar 10, 2010 5:22 PM EST reply actions

I like

Weatherspoon more too. But IMO, 43 LB’s just aren’t that important. Especially not any more. Unless that said LB has skills to cover players like Dallas Clark, in which case he could be worth a high draft pick. But none of these top ranked Lb’s are projected to be able to do that.

Anthony Davis didn't participate in the Pro Day today

Which means the Jaguars were either there to talk to him or to watch CB Devin McCourty.

McCourty

is underrated IMO. He looks small on film, but he plays like one of those feisty small guys that wanna show everyone that he’s physical, and he can play with the big guys. And he’s got all the measurables too. He will be drafted high than the average Joe thinks.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 10, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

John, I disagree that a 4.74 isn't a terrible time

Maybe that’s ok for a 3rd round or later pick, but it is not ok for a 4-3 guy with a Top 10 pick. That’s pitifully slow. He should be ruled out for the Jaguars.

In Gene We Trust.

I agree

After his workouts and more time to watch his old games(I actually re-watched the whole Auburn game just watching him) I no longer feel is a top ten pick.

I think our

slowest LB is still significantly faster than that.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 11, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yikes. How many times have we heard… “but he ran slow at the combine” … or something along those lines… only to show that none of it actually mattered after the guy was drafted… i would hope that folks don’t put their entire stock in combine numbers..

by cuffs007 on Mar 11, 2010 7:47 PM EST reply actions

It's not just the combine (where he didn't run)

Watch the tape. Inside he does well, but take things to the perimeter and he has problems making plays. I’d enjoy having McClain on the Jags, but I can’t co-sign him at 10. Maybe if they manage to trade back…

In a 3-4 I think McClain will thrive, but I just don’t see him as being strong in coverage, and I see him getting beat on the perimeter. I could be wrong, but his stock is dropping.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

by harperslaw on Mar 11, 2010 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

I was saying he was slow

way before I even knew what he was gonna run. He just looks slow to me. Not to mention the Chron’s disease, which varies in severity (So we can’t compare him to Garrard with any assurance of similar results), and it’s also a progressive disease which means it could get worse. I pray that whatever team he does end up on that it doesn’t get worse.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 12, 2010 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

At least with

Haden, he looks faster on tape than his combine time suggest. I think McClain looks even slower than his pro day time.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 12, 2010 12:32 AM EST up reply actions

anyhoooooo… i did not mention any specific player… so, if you take my statement, directly above, in a more open and general fashion… then you’d (again, to no one in particular) be on track w/me
