Gerald Alexander

Is Gerald Alexander the fit for SS, right now, I beleive so. Gerald Alexander is a hard hitter, a great tackler, with good awareness, and pretty good coverage skills. Gerald is pretty young still, and may eventually develop into a good safety, maybe even a great safety. Only if Reggie Nelson could hit like this.....

Another safety like this and our DBs would be set.

That was a pretty good trade
getting Alexander from the Lions. He was the only safety who played reasonably well, and hopefully, he continues to improve.
True
Wrapping up correctly is a technique that can be easily learnt…. provided the midset to hit people is there. 90% of the problems with tackling are about being afraid to get physical and risk getting hurt themselves. If you are not afraid, technique is easy to teach.
(I say this from personal experience playing rugby. I’m a smallish guy (165 pounds or so), but when I played rugby I had no problem whacking much bigger guys onto their ass…. I had the mindset, the technique was easy. On the flip side, all the technique in the world won’t help you if you are worried about the hit)
I wouldn't say
everyone is like that. Nelson has no problem throwing his body around, and yet he wont consistently wrap up. Though he did wrap up more often this year, than in years past. Truth is, if you’ve been in the league this long you’ve been taught to wrap up plenty of times.
I'm not so sure
The league seems to get worse and worse, generally, at wrap-up tackling with every year. I don’t understand it, but it’s not exactly a rare problem with DBs in the league. Are they getting taught to do it? Is this a problem which is coming through to the NFL from College? I really don’t know…. and I don’t watch enough college ball to make a judgement (ironically enough, I don’t watch college ball because of the lack of quality defense).
But, Vic is right…. tackling is getting worse and worse. Higher scoring games are not just a consequence of rule changes.
