Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

With the 19th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Atlanta Falcons select OLB Sean Witherspoon, Missouri.

The Falcons will take the best DE or OLB available. Dunta Robinson gives the Falcons a quality CB, will allievates that former need. Weatherspoon is the best overall OLB and is the best OLB suited to play in a 4-3 defense. At the combine he put up 34 bench reps as well as a 40 inch vertical, which is an indication of his talent and physical attributes.

I was just watching him on NFL network

I think the Falcons would be giddy if he fell to them. Quick and athletic. Their defense is immediately better considering how good Sean is in coverage.

The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.

Falcon fan here...

Please don’t eat me, I come in peace, in response to this I would say you are damn right we would be happy if Witherspoon fell to us, the man is a Terminator in LB’s body.

Weatherspoon said on his Twitter

That a NFC South team in the top 20 had been showing him a lot of interest. Obviously he’s talking about the Falcons.

This is really nice.

Nice job, guys. I especially like the analysis of the draft choices. Have you thought about doing a critique of the picks Draft Night?

I plan on doing that

but it’ll be a little late since i’ll actually be there!

For them, they think he's quality.

For every team that plays against, loves him too.

Yeah, but you guys love Chris Brown more.

Good pick for Witherspoon…he’s gonna be a stud.

Also, not that I wanna see him in teal...

but is there anyone here that is rooting for Weatherspoon to be a Jaguar?

by TexansDC on Mar 11, 2010 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

If we trade down

Absolutely. He’s definitely not worth the 10th pick, but if we could drop to 18th or so he’d be perfect.

I would like to get him

as second round pick. He’s very charismatic. So much so that he almost makes me wanna rank him higher than I really think I should.

Yeah...

If Seattle really wanted CJ Spiller, maybe they could flop with you guys.

I dunno, I would think about him at 10. Lately, LBs seem to make an immediate impact (Ryans, Cushing, Matthews, Willis, etc) and this guys definitely seems like a big-time player.

by TexansDC on Mar 12, 2010 1:17 AM EST up reply actions

At 10, you could probably get Rolando Mcclain if you wanted a LB

bad enough. But Brandon Graham and Sean Witherspoon are trade down candidates in my mind.

Graham's more a pass rusher than LB

McClain’s good, but I figure Weatherspoon is athletic and talented enough to be able to cover Dallas Clark and Owen Daniels while also being a capable blitzer and covering sideline to sideline.

You can definitely get him before 18, but if there’s no trade partners then I don’t think anyone would say “That’s a trrbl pick.” Everything’s reach/value now…but it’s all moot when they step on the field and perform. You guys are just hard to peg as far as a pick…you have a lot of promising youth at a lot of positions and the slot makes some good picks awkward, such as Weatherspoon.

I mean, it won’t be as good as Ryans and Cushing, but Daryl Smith and Weatherspoon isn’t a shabby duo at all.

by TexansDC on Mar 12, 2010 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

They would almost

be on par with each other. Cushing is a good 2 down LB, but he isn’t as good as Weatherspoon in coverage. He’s a great tackler, but Peyton threw at Cushing regularly because he was easy to take advantage of. Don get me wrong, I think he will get better at covering with experience. And he’s better in a zone than he is manned up against players like Clark. And I know the plays he’s made on the ball through the air.
And I think Smith doesn’t get the fame that Ryans does, but he’s just as good IMO. I mean the guy even played some DE and DT.
