Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Rolando Maclain?? and Kampmans signing.

Hey , guys, i think Rolando Maclain it is a great guess for our pick this year, but, im starting to dislike this kids footage.
I just saw this video, and although he is strong and tackles on his feet, he does look slow, and get seriously distracted with some blocks, forgets the ball. He does have some good reading skills, but, i think he is no MACHINE, and maybe not BAP at 10. It doesnt feel completely right.

Regarding our last year 1 pick. Its true we had serious need at OT, thats why we had hired tra thomas. And had need at WR, where we hired tory Holt.

So I  post this crazy thought….

He have recently hired Kampman … sooo, we are surely getting new DE this year for Kampman to develop. Just like Tory Holt did, and Tra did.
What do you think? Could this be Gene's strategy. Guessing which are our possibilities for BAP, and which guys we are fond of, and then hiring great old "teachers". Or is it just that we are taking care of the need in FA, just in case BAP doesnt cover our needs?

I think it is kinda weird last year we covered our needs in the draft, and had a couple of veterans waiting on the kids.

I wouldnt be surprised if we pick in late rounds a couple of sleeper DE's, avoiding bust risk at this urgent need position. Or taking a Calculated risk with machine Derrick Morgan?

BAP BAP BAP BAP… You stray, you pay … You can never go wrong with BAP, even if you just signed someone to the same position you drafted because that doesn’t mean you have to keep them all too … There are zero players who are a lock for the team, even when the season starts (possible, but not probable) … having solid competition at any position can only make your team better … and with Gene and Co. doing those sorts of things it shouldn’t get worse

I see what you're getting at, but I disagree.

Kampman’s contract is way too long for him to be a stopgap player. I think we’ll probably still end up with a DE in the 1st, but I don’t think Kampman’s signing has to do with that. However, I’m sure it won’t hurt to have someone with that much experience.

agree

kampman gets paid too much to be a tra thomas type player. i think that the kampman signing helps gene stay to BAP rather than need

i also think that the nfl is all about speed/quickness

and i dont kno much about mclain, but if the knock on him is that he is slow, i dont want him

All prior ideas and indictations would seem like Mcclain is a greatttttt LB, but something makes me question it now.

It doesnt feel completely right.

Yeah, I agree.

Too slow.

We need speed on defense. Not saying everyone needs to run a 4.3 but a 4.7 is unacceptable.

can you really count the difference?

less than half a second and you are saying it’s unacceptable? I don’t want him anymore, will be happy with the DT that was discussed on BlackandTeal.

37 days and counting……

McClain...........

I think the speed thing is not an issue. McClain has uncanny play calling ability on defense. You don’t have to be super fast if you put your defense in the right place at the right time. He knows what is coming. I think he would be a great fit here in Jax.

I agree completely

His speed is pretty good and I don’t think that is a big problem. His biggest problem is he likes tackling the running back up high, and that doesn’t fly with RBs like Chris Johnson etc. However, our coaching staff can fix that no problem. His greatest attribute is his intelligence, he can see want is happening and knows what to do. His run support is really good, so is his pass (may need improvement there but who doesn’t) He is an instant up grade over Ingram, and I hope he falls to us at number 10

Conditioning doesn't make anyone faster. Few things do if you are already slow.

I could jog a 4.7.

Conditioning does exactly what it say it does: condition the body for high level competition.

i disagree........

I have experienced it first hand……….. getting your legs stronger and leaner allows them to move quicker and give you extra spring.

I agree with you FRANKdubz

I’ve experienced it first hand, the better conditioning you have the stronger your leg muscles become, plus like Slvrgun said it does condition you, but it conditions you to go in the top gear longer (i.e staying “fresh” longer)

by Messina on Mar 16, 2010 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't really

like Morgan as a prospect in the top ten, but he’s got some monster thighs. Being winded is different than wearing down. Some people are just heavy breathers. Also he was running 34OLB drills something he doesn’t do regularly. Probably something that exhaust a lot of energy from someone as big as he is.
And yes with better conditioning your legs become stronger, but also more aerobic exercises don’t help with quick twitch muscle building. And quick twitch is what it’s all about.
