Trading Down and Still Getting Your Gator Fix

I would love to see the Jags Trade down (which I know probably wont happen ) And possibly pick up a second round pick. In this draft there seems to be alot of great players in the bottom of the first round and some are Gators "No im not talkin Tebow " For instance,, Maurkice Pouncey Center ,Gators,,A good solid center who could learn from one of the best Brad Meester. Or maybe Brandon Spikes Inside Linebacker , Gators,,One of the best in college and the draft. And last but certainly not least Aaron Hernandez Tight end ,,,well you know .He is flat out a play maker while watching the Gators play last year he always seemed to find away to get the ball in his hands and make big plays . I truley think he will be a great T.E in the NFL...So there you have it A win win situation for the Gator and Jag fans alike,,,Tell me what you think

Percy Harvin?

Andre Caldwell? Louis Murphy?

I could look into the past and see players like HOF DE Jack Youngblood, or Emmitt Smith. Kevin Carter? Mike Peterson? Fred Taylor?

Those are off the top of my head. Sorry, but your statement has some merit, but it doesn’t hold. No one could have guessed at what would happen with Harvey (who, by the way, isn’t as bad as you may thing) or Nelson (who was close to receiving defensive rookie of the year his rookie season). You can’t overlook the talent of these players because you’ve seen two players come out and not do as well as they might have.

Do you hate Fred Taylor for playing at Florida?

I can’t take you seriously. Too much hate, and your picture doesn’t help. You sound like a FSU homer that has a bone to pick with UF players.

I wouldn't mind picking up Maurkice Pouncey

Unlike skill positions at Florida, the offensive line doesn’t really get hyped, and don’t really benefit due to the benefit system. Pouncey is one of the better C/G prospects out there, and I think he will do well. That being said, I wouldn’t want to pick him up before the mid-twenties.

Spikes, Dunlap and Hernandez all seem like solid, early to mid second round choices to me. Spikes I’ma little weary of, and Dunlap had some games where he was a non-factor (plus a DUI). Hernandez, however, is a beast. Large, strong and hard working – whoever picks him up is going to get a jewel, I think.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Mar 15, 2010 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

That all being said...

I will not be happy with a Gator player if it is a reach. If they are the BAP, awesome.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Mar 15, 2010 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Hernandez is craziness.

His cutting ability is all sorts of crazy, has good hands, and is damn quick. The guy’s got moves.

by Kbot on Mar 15, 2010 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah he's a big WR

if you wanna see a true old school smash mouth TE that can catch too, knows how to set up defenders, break tackles, sit in zones, and block DT’s on the regular Logan Paulsen is your guy with and added mean streak. Exactly what this offense needs. A guy that can play like Eben Britton talks.(If the video freezes try changing the video quality)

He could be the next

Kyle Brady. He’s super strong and the best blocker in the draft. Only had modest numbers as a receiver, but he played with a bunch of backup QB’s and with a freshman QB this last year. Not to mention he was made to block a lot, to help a horrible offensive line. Our run game could definitely take a step forward with him blocking the way. I mean the guy was blocking players like Tyson Alualu, Everson Griffen, and Fili Moala! Those guys are huge first day draft picks! And he’s knocking them on their arses!

by Ewdtrey on Mar 15, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree with you there

Judging by the video i wouldn’t expect him to get the ball a lot but it’d be fun to watch when he does.

How’s his pass blocking technique? It’s tough to judge by the video?

When is he projected to go?

by rusty904 on Mar 16, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

His pass pro

is better than the offensive tackles on the team. haha

by Ewdtrey on Mar 16, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Better

Than Meester’s.

by Bestjagfan on Mar 16, 2010 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha

Unfortunately that’s almost true. Hopefully Meester can last at least half the season without losing too much steam. He wasn’t all that bad early in the season. He just really wore down.
Speaking of wearing down. If we were to lose Lewis for any length of time, this team would be screwed, with it’s current roster.
We practically need someone like Logan Paulsen on the team. We have enough players like Wilford. We got Miller and Osgood. And MSW has been an underrated blocker too.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 17, 2010 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

We need another blocking tight end. Fortunately Paulsen can catch as well, unlike our past blocking tight ends(Angulo).

Yeah, Meester is the clear weakness on a young offensive line. Once we replace him our line will be set at least for five years, until Manuwai slows down.

Newton? Stephenson? That’s about it really. And I really doubt Stephenson’s ability.

I was thinking Newton

Stephenson had an okay camp last year, but I don’t think he has the power to play inside, or the athleticism to play outside.

Just found

Logan Paulsen’s website. Some convincing info in here.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 25, 2010 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

He's supposed to be a late round pick

at best according to the pundits. But I don’t think the league thinks he should be that late of a pick. He was a favorite for the Mackey award going into his regular senior season, but then broke his foot and fell off the radar. He did fully recover from his injuries his RS Senior year.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 16, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

He didn’t do a lot of it, but he ran after the catch well when he was thrown the ball. Instead of Wilford we could have him, Miller and Marcedes on the roster.

by Bestjagfan on Mar 16, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

That's exactly what I was thinking

And he’s a good special teamer too.
Now in our heavy set(two TE’s) we can go to either side for our point of attack. That’s huge for short yardage and goal line plays.

Hernandez

is not a big TE. And he definitely benefited from the system. I don’t think he’s nearly the prospect that Cornelius Ingram was last year, and he was a 5th rounder.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 15, 2010 5:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Ingram tore his ACL in his senior season

That is why he was a 5th rounder. And guess what happened during training camp? He tore it again. Thus why he didn’t go earlier.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Mar 15, 2010 5:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Well from what I understand

he was fully healed and expected to produce his rookie year.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 15, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Drafting just because they're a Gator

would only be feasible if UF ever won a Super Bowl… Last I checked, they’re not allowed on the same field as the Detroit Lions however.

In the face of adversity, what you do from then on dictates who you really are...

by JagsNguyen on Mar 15, 2010 5:43 AM EDT reply actions

A couple years ago the Lions

Were still winning games occasionally. They would have pulverized Florida. Even a year ago when they lost every game, the Gators wouldn’t have a chance. Every single player on even the worst team has been drafted or good enough to make a team. No college football team has that depth.

Kidding or not

If people keep saying it enough, someone starts believing it. I grew up in Michigan and it was a broken record. I’ve had to explain it so many times… It is on the same level to a Lions fan as saying the Jags are headed to LA. I just hate hearing it.

by Zoltan from Budapest on Mar 15, 2010 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

but we all know we have our BAP list and GENE has his. When the pick is actually made there will still be many on this board that think he was reaching simply because they don’t agree with him.

by pksiv on Mar 15, 2010 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

If I traded down

and had to pick a Gator it would probably be Carlos Dunlap. Team him with Harvey and you get Nat’l Championship results with MVP honors. I can’t see no merit as to players from Fla. not making it to NFL caliber it happens at all schools. I am very much looking forward to the draft as I beleive the Jags will be extremely active moving pics and players.

by jagswinbig on Mar 15, 2010 9:15 AM EDT reply actions

Not a fan of Spikes

Havent watched enough to have a strong opinion or proof but he seems really stiff and slow. Dunlap’s DUI I think has him in question with our character based drafting style. We could really use Pouncey to play guard until Meester retires and then shift to center. Thats my thought.

Derek and Rashean are for. Haden can cover the other guy.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 15, 2010 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not true

because who can cover Andre and etc…. No one really. But at least he can cover players like Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 16, 2010 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions

With your earlier statement...

You said that Derek and Rashean were going to cover Andre and the like. If the guy can’t cover a top WR, he isn’t worth the 10 overall pick, period.

I honestly believe he can, but with what you said, he wouldn’t be.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Mar 16, 2010 7:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Wayne would eat him alive.

Haden isn’t even better than Cox and Cox was drafted much later.

I like the no-name

small school guys. That’s where you get the value in the draft. Everyone can scout someone like Dunlap. It takes a trained eye to find gems. That’s what the scouting department and Gene Smith are paid to do.

haha

here’s a gem for you: LB Vuna Tuihalamaka
He reminds me of a Jon Beason. Not really tall, but strong as an Ox and speed to get him from sideline to sideline, and the mobility to cover in space, and the instincts to play downhill. And he was a JC transfer, which means he’s got some upside that hasn’t been realized yet due to probable sub par coaching early on.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 15, 2010 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Why is this guy not getting more press?

He appears to have great natural ball hawking instincts, speed, and actually appears to tackle properly. What is this kids down side?

by flint on Mar 16, 2010 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Vuna

He doesnt seem to hit, rather he is what i call “a diver”. Did anyone see one big hit in his reel? However he has tremendous burst and good instincts. And tackling can be taught, instincts however can not.

by bardock19 on Mar 16, 2010 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions

HItting vs Tackling

Reggie Nelson = Big HIts

Vuna = Tackling

or am I mistaken? He may not hit hard, but he takes the man down without letting him get any further passed him or bouncing off of him as we see happen to Nelson more often than not…

by flint on Mar 16, 2010 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

He's not getting a lot of press

because he plays at AZ and he was a JC transfer. He’s only like 6’1"

I just want good players. If they’re from Florida, great. If they’re from South Hampton Institute of Technology, great. If they’re good, I could care less if they come from the Gators or the Sandwiches. Can’t fathom why anyone would avoid players from a certain school because some haven’t worked out.
