ArrowheadPride blogger looking for some Jaguar mock draft help.

Hey all, im Genericbrand, a fan and blogger over at Arrowheadpride. We are currently working through a 2 round mock draft on our site and I've been given the responsibilities of handling your Jaguars. Lucky(or unlucky?) for me you only have a 1st round pick so I was wondering if you could give me some insight on who you all would like to see drafted and why.

Star-divide

I'm not going to pretend I know alot of things that are Jaguar but based on some research and reading I've done I've learned a few things. First is that Gene Smith apparently is not a person who will shy away from taking the best player available. Second is that it seems like the biggest needs are a play making receiver, an additional pass rusher and some help in the secondary.

I know Kampmann was signed a few days ago which should really help the pass rushing department but a new body opposite him may help as well. I feel your pain as the Chiefs were in the same boat in 2008 with futility in the pass rush and we made some strides last year but really we also need a more consistent force opposite our #1 rusher. As far as the draft goes, things could pan out that Derrick Morgan is available when the Jags pick.

As an avid fantasy football player, after this season, I am very well versed in who Mike Sims-Walker is. Seems like a growing star but again like the pass rushing issue he may need help opposite him to really reach his potential. Kasim Osgood was a great signing because at the very least you know you have a stud special teams guy but as far as him as a WR goes he's still an unproven commodity. Dez Bryant has all the talent you could want and need in a WR and may drop due to the diva-ish character issues he's displayed. Its starting to remind me of Crabtree 2.0 but remember once Crabtree got on the field and started actually playing he instantly showed signs of what could be.

It seems like alot of teams are short great playmakers in the secondary especially at safety. Again(and it may be because we have alot of holes) I can sympathize and know the feeling of wanting someone special back there. Theres a few FA safeties still available but as far as drafting is concerned A guy like Earl Thomas will likely be there. A longer shot but miracles happen and Joe Haden may even be there at corner.

I'm looking for whatever insight and knowledge you can lend me so I can make a good, solid pick for your team in our draft. I appreciate you reading this and any help you can give an outsider to better represent the Jags.

Derek Morgan, Eric Berry(doubt will be available), Rolando McClain, earl thomas.

1. Need a new DE, harvey sucks, and Kampmazn qwont be there in 5 years, hes 30. Need some more promising DEs
2. Need a new a safety,Reggie Nelson leaves a big gap in our secondary, he can’t tackler nor cover(zone/man)
3. We need a good ILB McClain can fit thedre. Jurant and Smith are great , but they are OLBs

Other thoughts

Harvey doesn’t suck he just isn’t getting the sacks. There is a gap at LB and at DB (SS and CB). I’m a believer that the biggest area of need is DT but there is no value in going after one in the 10 spot. They will not go WR. If Clausen is there he may be a consideration as would be Spiller. I’m leaning towards Haden or McClain. But I also believe Graham is worth the 10 pick and is capable of playing a 4-3 end.

I am personally thinking Haden, Spiller or McClain based on where they fall…sort of BAP but is also needed….I heavily doubt either WR, QB[, DT, K, P, waterboy, defensive coordinator, head coach, Rich Eisen, Paul Kuharsky,] or a TE

just covering my bases, my gut has been wrong for the Jags before, it helps I am a Gatorphile football-wise but I was hoping the Jaguars would trade down and get either Percy Harvin or gag, Andre’ Smith the Alabama OT last year. However imagine if my gut had been right in 2008 and they had gotten Chris Johnson in the 1st as a RB to help transition Freddy into retirement/permanent sideline RB-who-is-ready-to-play…seriously imagine last year with a slightly better OL (Collier in one of the greatest losses ever to the Jags, real and football-wise, had been projected to suceed into a starting RG or RT spot)….CJ and MJD the greatest tandem since Fred and MJD!

There are a few threads like this already - you can find a lot there.

1. Berry
2. Haden
3. McClain
4. Morgan
5. Spiller (with Earl Thomas in a close 6th)

That’s my personal list for the Jags, and you’ll find it fits around what most here like. Some have Spiller higher and some have McClain and Haden lower due to their combines. However, I really believe in tape, and on tape they are great players.

The Jags would not likely go for a WR in the 1st. They have had too many 1st round WR busts to go that way again this soon, I believe. The team is looking to make the playoffs and a lot of things can be improved, but the biggest area is the front seven of the defense.

i know this won’t help you, but… I highly doubt the Jags will stay at the 10 spot… i foresee a trade for a 2nd and 3rd or fouth, plus a conditional pick in 2011… there’ s just not a No-Brainer around there… i’m figuring they’ll drop back to 15th thru 25th pick in first round… ok, i’m done… too much Splenda® for me… HA!…

Usually

conditional picks are only traded for players, because they are based on production. fyi

could still happen. not impossible, just not highly probable. thanks though.

Big Hen and Pot Roast

Are not enough. Hen is aging and even with him in there depth is a demand. The DT position as a whole did not perform well enough last year to warrant the belief that the position is solid.

I think the depth is there

but I don’t think we have a true penetrating DT. Someone that can get to the QB, or at least help the DE’s get to the QB.

With the lost of Derek Landri and Rob Meier last season, depth was nil at DT in terms of pass-rush. Stanley and Ellison are good at the run D though

+1

Could use him, but he wont be valuable enough for the risk that he comes with. Unless he falls to our next pick.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 17, 2010 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

probably still not even then, b/c character concerns about this player in this case may “black out” his actual physical prowess and game ‘goodness’ according to the GMGene

I'm saying

he’s worth a 3rd round pick at least. And there is no doubt about that, that’s for sure.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 18, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

alright I’ll give you that, but the GMGene’s big board figures in character as well

IMO

Character concerns hurt the percieved value of a player. I and the Jags are value pickers. I would cerainly get Bryant after the first round becuase the value is to great.
