Who is sick of the NFL's mock drafts?

Like any true football fan I have been looking forward to the draft and getting excited to the new talent which this team hopefully will obtain. So when I see a new mock-draft posted on NFL.com I jump on it, and to tell you all now I'M SICK OF EVERYONE SAYING WE WILL DRAFT A DE!!!!!!!!!!

I'm well aware that our pass rush is in dire need of help, but lets look at what has occurred this off season and how that will affect our pass rush. First, the signing of Joe Cullen to the D-line, hopefully he will be able to provide the coaching that is needed to propel our D-line to greatness (or just getting a few sacks a game). The most important attribute he can bring is coaching Harvey in becoming the pass rusher we drafted in the first round. Now I know a lot of people out there label Harvey as a bust, and the first season he was, but look at what he has done this past season under a new D-coord. No he has not gotten the sacks we want, but he has been great against the run and it developing into a good all around defensive player.

The second off season change has been the addition of Aaron Kampman. I'm well aware that he still needs time to heal, and I'm well aware that he will not solve all of your DE/pass rush problems, but he is a step in the right direction. He provides the veteran experience on the D-line that we need, and will be a great coach for the young DE's like Harvey, and a underrated Julius Williams.

The now those are the two major off season changes which I saw, if I missed any please comment. Now, should we draft a DE in the first round we will be paying 3 HUGE salaries for DE's, Harvey's, Kampman's and the new guy. Should a DE be the best avaliable player on the board, then I hope Gene goes from him, but I don't think that will happen. There are many DE's in this draft and many other talented players we could grab in the first round. I could go into detail but frankly I don't have the time as I should be writing a history essay right now. I'm sure  Ewdtrey or Zoltan or someone could go through the list.

Maybe these mock draft analyzers like Brooks don't know that Gene is GM in Jacksonville, and don't know that the days of drafting need in Jacksonville are over (hopefully). Or maybe Brooks and company don't realize that Jacksonville is not made of money. Or maybe they are not on the draft Tim Tebow train? (joke, I personally do not want Tebow).

Well I guess we will all have to wait until Draft  day, and remember In Gene We Trust

Yes, messina I agree myself…the idea of three ballpark DE contracts kills me….anyone remember Seth payne, Tony Brackens, Paup, and Reynaldo Wynn with Gary Walker at DT? Their contracts together were a reason we lost McCardell to the Cap and any years Boselli and Searcy had left to the Cap as well

The likely thing is that a DE will be drafted, whether it is 1st round or later.

Why? Because it is a deep, deep DE draft, and Gene Smith likes to pick the best player available at the pick. If we pick at 10 and Haden, McClain and Berry are gone, the only two players you could argue are better picks than Derrick Morgan (discounting Bryant) are Spiller and Thomas, maybe. And that’s all opinion. I have Morgan rated higher than those two.

If the team drafts based on need instead of talent, we lose. Period.

I know that, but I am saying investing too much into one posisiton set (like the DL) will overbalance the whole cap (though we don’t have to worry about that this year, maybe for a long while if there is a lockout)

Cap? Cap?

You do know that the Jags have one of the lowest salaries in the NFL, right?

by alwaysforgiven821 on Mar 18, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, I am talking about a set-up like the late 90s when they were fine in the cap but within two to three years they were suddenly almost 25 million over (’01 offseason)

well yeah, I didn’t really state about the draft, but Fernando Bryant and R. jay Soward both had large contracts…the FA signing killed the cap, but other stuff was poured on top of it, like Brunell refused to restructure so did Walker, but you can lose a DT but not your #1 QB. Always, I cede the floor because I did not make my point accurately enough, sort of a loose point. The FA signings caused the death of the late 90s Jag heyday. Its depressing if you think about it. Payne, Walker, Stroud and Henderson could of been the DT rotation and Brackens, Spicer, Meier, and a couple of others at DE. Main difference is the Jags passing game post-2001, then post-2005? One was the loss of McCardell, Two of Jimmy Smith, the Jags really haven’t fully recovered no WR or TE had made the Probowl in a half-decade.

Seriously thats why the salaries have been controled outside of a few way out there contracts during Harris’ era. In one year I believe 40 percent of the cap was in the passing game

Not that I think

that it will influence our pick at 10, but I didn’t really take into account the fiscal matter of signing another top ten DE.
But if we were to spend that much at any position outside of QB, it would be at DE.

All of it.

All talk of the draft, before the draft is absolutely senseless to me. I nor anybody outside the organization has the power to influence what is going to happen and I have no urge to speculate. Talk after the draft is when the excitement starts IMO.

yeah

It’s all speculation and opinion. I mean, who really knows who the raiders will pick?

Probably the fastest guy there, no matter what. So I say Trindon Holliday

I think

Jacoby Ford was even faster. And he’s actually pretty talented at receiver. He’s just a little short, and he’s just not as fast on the field as he times.

Jacoby Ford was fastest at 4.28

I know cuz I won a contest and guessed this

Yeah know lol

just trying to be less in your face by making less of a statement and more of a strong suggestion.

I see another big man

If we stay at 10 wouldn’t be surprised to see an OT or DT picked. If a top10 tackle is their we got to get the big men early.

I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired...

of all the mock drafts and speculation. I’m thinking of drinking a gallon of NyQuil, hopefully to wake up in time on that fateful Thursday in April for the draft. Sure I’ll miss a birthday and some work… but what can compete with NyQuil dreams anyway? Not much I say.

Haha weirdo

I personally like these mocks, even if they are stupid most of the time. I am with you however on not being able to wait for the draft to come.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 19, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Usually I am in agreement and can't get enough...

but this year has taken a toll on me. Maybe it’s the stress of the Tebow situation and ticket sales and all that… Maybe I actually need a football vacation. ORRRRRRRR just a gallon of NyQuil and a nice long nap. Just sayin….
