2010 Scouting Report: John Destin, CB, Tulsa

Ok guys, I'm determined to write a scouting report for at least one person who is actually drafted by the Jaguars. Last year Surteal did a report on Jarett Dillard and we all whiffed on everyone else. My newest strategy is to write scouting reports for players that the Jaguars have either showed interest in, or held personal workouts with. With that said, Tulsa cornerback John Destin is reportedly scheduled to have a private meeting with the Jaguars.

John Destin's story is a rags to riches story that leaves you with no choice, but to pull for him. Originally from Belle Glades, Florida, Destin graduated from high school receiving no interest from any colleges. Without the money to afford a college tuition, he was forced to take a job bagging groceries while still not giving up on his dream of being a football player and a college graduate. After a year and a half away from football, Destin finally found a spot on a junior college team and played a season.

Still not giving up on his dream of the big stage, Destin put together a highlight tape on Youtube and sent it to 119 division I schools. He received a scholarship from one school, the University of Tulsa. Now just 3 years later, John Destin is speaking with NFL teams about a possible career in football. Namely the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In his three seasons at Tulsa, Destin saw playing time in all 42 of his games, starting in 20. At 6'0, 195 pounds, Destin is a very physical corner that has average speed, 4.50 40 yard dash, who loves to jam his opposing receivers off the line. In transition to the next level, he will have to adjust to the change in rules that will force him to refrain from some of the physicality that he used to be successful at the collegiate level.

There is literally nothing about him on the internet

ESPN has his birthday wrong
CDSDraft.com, who has everyone, doesn’t have him on the site

I’m assuming he’s going undrafted, but who knows.

Just saying:

I didn’t write any scouting reports last year, but I did point out Mike Thomas and credited him as being a poor man’s Percy Harvin(But faster) with the upside of a Steve Smith(Car). And I was really high on Dillard before we drafted him. Which reminds me, I was also really high on Austin Collie. In fact I was fairly upset when I found out the Colts drafted Collie, and because I wasn’t watching the draft straight through, I felt better when I found out that we had already drafted Mike Thomas.

Video

I’m not super impressed by the video (the first one). There is alot of awful QB play there. A few times it would have been a touchdown if an NFL QB had thrown it. Took a decent angle though when the other CB on the other side of the field blew his tackle. He had decent tackling, never left his feet, decent wrap up, went low. Not as good as Cox though. Has pretty good read/reaction skills, but a step slower than a shut down corner. I’d throw a late round shot to him.

if i was that optimistic...

i still think reggie can be salvaged. He has all the physical skills in the world. He just needs to talk to Cox. I think, ultimately, Nelson will be moved to CB.

I hear ya - I was simply being a little sarcastic :-)

The tackling exhibition we saw last year for Mr Nelson was beyond horrible in the extreme. I thought the overall effort blew dog as well. Maybe he just had a crap season, but I think he’s had a steady decline — gradual at times and then we get last season.

Of course no pass rush isn’t exactly making him or anyone else look like all pro in the secondary either and I do recognize that also.

I caught it, lol

I was still defending Reggie to those who didn’t. I hope GM Gene sits down Reggie and says, ‘LEARN TO TACKLE!’. Tackling isn’t hard. Use your arms, wrap up, put your facemask in their numbers, go low, get your head across their running path. Bam. I learned that the first day of my high school playing days.

Hmmm......

……he sent a tape to 119 schools and only got one offer. No need to go any further. There were a lot of schools that desperately needed CB’s and all he got was Tulsa. Next!

that really doesn’t mean anything. If they took your approach and said, “well nobody scouted him, he must stink”, they could be sorely mistake. DEREK COX IS THE 106th RATED CB!!!! Raaar!

by The Linebacker on Mar 19, 2010 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah but...

….it was 119 schools. I’m just playing the probability game and saying that he’s not worth it. The difference between Derek and John is the Derek looked good on his tape. This guy looks horrible. I can see Gene with his scout cap on seeing that this guy only has average speed (one area that Gene has already stated the defense needs to improve on) and seeing this tape and turning it off within two minutes. Maybe he can go from average to blazing speed in a short amount of time, but I don’t think so.

You also have to think

that they have to have scholarships open and etc to give. Not to mention many other complications. One good point is that he started a lot of games once he got there in college. Now that says something to me.

He plays

A good cover three. Nobody gets behind him. He presses well, as you said.

Belle Glades

Where Freddy T. hails from. Did Destin play for Pahokee or Glades Central?

That second video

the one he used to get a scholarship… very painful to watch.

I’m rooting for this guy though. A serious feel good story. I hope he makes it.

He must've taken some video production classes at Tulsa

Because both videos were made by him on the same Youtube account.

The Jags

Only has 5 picks in this years draft. After seeing the success of last years draft class, it would really hard to duplicate another solid class, but I do think Gene is up for it.

There is a chance that we can trade back etc…with that said, Gene has 5 shots to come out w potential studs so and corner pick has to justify that.

Welcome to Camelot

Trading Back

I had a sorta silly, sorta serious mock that I posted over at draftcountdown, where I played with the idea of trading down. What if the Jags could do this.

Trade back to the middle/late of 1 and get a 2 and 4th.
Trade the 1 for a 2nd and get a 3rd and 5th.
That would give us, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3C, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B. Lol, I bet GM Gene could work wonders with that.

Ok

He looks decent. We should at least give him a chance on scout team see how he does. One question. How do compensatory picks work? i dont get that part of the draft lol

by LoyalJagfromTX on Mar 21, 2010 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

Comp picks

are a way of replacing lost free agents from the year before, through picks in the draft. The picks all come at the end of rounds, and they very from the 4rd round to the 7th round. 32 picks are given away each year, so in a way the draft is really 8 rounds. The league basically puts a value on a player by how much our team’s lost FA makes the following year after being signed by the players new team, and he has to be signed through the whole year or our team will not get comp picks.
So basically if you lose a really expensive FA, like the Titans did to the Redskins, you will get a 3rd round pick.
However, if you sign players through FA they will effectively cancel out players lost in FA, if they are of equal or lesser value. Again their value is determined by the league.
One last caveat; only players that have their contracts expire and are signed during the FA period count for or against comp picks. So in other words if you cut a player and another team signs him, you will not be compensated in the draft. Also if a player is not signed during that first FA period, but rather after the period is over(Like during the regular season) he does not count for or against the comp pick(s).
Also, as I said before, if the player you lost to FA gets cut before the end of the year, you get no compensation.
