Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

With the fourth pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select Eric Berry, Safety, University of Tennessee.

Arguably the best player in the entire draft, Eric Berry is the total package, and silenced the critics with his showing at the Combine.

Berry is very physical, aggressive, intelligent, and has outstanding character. He can blitz like a LB and cover like a ball-hawking CB, and being coached by Monte Kiffin only made Berry more NFL-ready.

Simply put, Eric Berry is as close to a sure thing as it gets in the draft - he will start from Day 1 and make a Troy Polamalu/Bob Sanders-type impact on his team.

Luxury Pick, But Definately Best Player on the Board

This was probably the first of many hard picks. Do you go BAP or need if you’re the Redskins?

The Redskins need an infusion of youth on the o-line, and Russell Okung or Anthony Davis could have provided immediate impact.

Still, with an underachieving Laron Landry at FS perhaps a move to SS will provide him the fuel to meet his potential. A motivated Laron Landry at SS and an Ed Reed like Eric Berry at FS would be pretty impressive at the back end.

Also, Clausen could go here if they really want Campbell gone. I think it’s too early, but you never know what the Raiders 2.0…err, Redskins, are going to do.

Landry's

Natural position is strong safety. I also think a move back there would help revive his career.

Except that

Chris Horton is already at SS.

I don't

Watch the Skins more than a few times a season. How did Horton do this year? I remember he was a big surprise his rookie year, a seventh rounder.

Did well

but ended up on the IR. But it’s not a bad injury. Calf injury or something. Still there best SS.

Over Landry?

I’m not doubting, I just remember Landry being a hot commodity just a few years ago.

I totally agree with everything you said, especially with Campbell

I felt like it really was the first of many hard picks. With the top 2 DTs gone and looking at the Redskins’ needs, it was tough between Berry, Okung, and Clausen. Had to go BAP and trust the depth at those positions later in the draft.

Plus I don’t know if Clausen will really have a better NFL career than some of the other QB prospects rated a little lower than him, which makes it hard to pick him at #4. (He could turn out to be the next Brady Quinn.)

LOL, they will be Raiders 2.0 if Snyder doesn’t let Shanahan do his job.

As much as I like

Berry. I would have gone with Okung. That Redskins OL at the end of the year was about as bad as the Lions. And if they want to see what Campbell really has, he needs more time in the pocket. Their defense was good enough last year. And generally speaking in their system, their safeties are not high priority.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 3, 2010 2:53 AM EST up reply actions

Typo, I meant picking Clausen at #5.

Eric Berry is a stud. Whoever ends up drafting him will have a badass player in their secondary for years and years to come.

I could still see the Skins going OT, though…even if Berry is still on the board.

Tough to pass on Berry

Solid explanation of the pick.
Having watched him play a bit, I am skeptical as to whether he will live up to the hype.

Ive been in love with him ever since te first time I saw him play.........

The dude is a str8 up freak and all he does is make plays on the ball. It’s scary to think we might pass him up to get more picks. But all in all, it’s a 1,000,000 – 1 chance he falls to us at #10.

I understand the pick

But I wouldn’t have made the same. I would’ve definitely picked Okung before Berry.

Solid explanation on the pick, though.

He might be the BAP; but I think Redskins will go for the QB.

Remember QB position is overdrafted; specially if you have a new HQ like the Redskins has with Shanahan.

But I’M ok with the pick!

by Zoltan from Budapest on Mar 2, 2010 2:26 PM EST reply actions

I understand why you'd go LT

That’s the more traditional top 5 pick and Washington needs an upgrade. I would have done the same, if Berry wasn’t there.

If Okung turns out to be a stud, I don’t think anyone will remember Washington passed him over, but that won’t be the case if Berry is on SportsCenter every Sunday.

I agree Z, Shanahan will probably go QB. I don’t think he’s going to keep Jason Campbell around.

I could be crazy

But I still believe that Jason Campbell, with some sense of continuity and a better o-line, could be a serviceable QB (David Garrard 2.0?)

He’s had the rug pulled out from under him (ie constant flow of offensive coordinators) so many times it’s a wonder he is an underachiever. If he does stay in Washington I really hope for his sake they get him some help.

Semi-Related: Why is Scouts Inc and ESPN so hard up on OT Anthony Davis? They have him as the 5th overall prospect ahead of Okung.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

by harperslaw on Mar 2, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Campbell

Has had 7 different coordinators in his college and pro career. Hard to settle down in an offense with that kind of upheaval.

+1, although...

Garrard hasn’t had Portis, Moss, Cooley, Davis, etc…

Unless Moss is playing the Cowboys

He’s waaay overrated. His first year with Washington he did have a monster year, but he’s never caught more than 79 balls since 2005.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

by harperslaw on Mar 2, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Portis

Is old and wearing down fast. He’ll be out of the league in two years. Moss isn’t anything but a deep threat. And Cooley is pretty good, but I think he is overrated as a route runner.

Garrard has had Taylor, Jones-Drew, Lewis, Sims-Walker.

I don’t think the difference is that much.

the Redskins OL was the best in the league. And I don’t even think it was that close. Unfortunately for them, they got old and Campbell never took advantage of that great line.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 3, 2010 2:57 AM EST up reply actions

But Even

When they had that great line, Antwann Randle El was their second receiver. I’m just sayin Campbell has never had great weapons to work with.

A.R.E.

actually wasn’t that bad back then. Underrated IMO. And Cooley was pro bowler. He didn’t have super fast tall guys. BUt he had quick receivers that got open and had good hands.

Randle El

Should have never been taken out of the slot. He’s never had more than 4 TD’s in a season, or 53 receptions. Great slash player, I just don’t like him on the outside.

He has been overrated at times

But he’s better than most and as you pointed out, Moss & Campbell may be better with a good offensive coordinator. Campbell doesn’t have the excuse of not having talent around him.

But Moss is a Cowboy-killer though, so he’s a baller in my book.

PFF

Love it or deride it, but ProfootballFocus.com has the Redskins overall passing game 20th overall at 22.4 with pass blocking at a -33.6 (good for 28th).

Campbell is not a west coast QB, and that’s what Zorn tried to make him (kind of like Jim Mora Jr trying to make Michael Vick a west coast QB).

If the Redskins blow a pick on Clausen here then I really think they’re making a mistake; they need to rebuild their defense and O-Line imo rather than getting horrible value due to a weak crop of QBs (Alex Smith anyone?).

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

by harperslaw on Mar 2, 2010 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Campbell

Has no talent around him. Right now thats one of the least talented offenses in the league.

Let me start

By saying this isn’t a bad pick. Berry is a stud at safety, even though Ben Tate ran him over. Ha

I wouldn’t have gone with a safety top five though. The Redskins do need help in the secondary, but their offensive line is in the bottom of the league, especially at left tackle. There is safety talent that would be available in the second and even third. In the second Chad Jones, Morgan Burnett and possibly Taylor Mays will be on the board.

I’d go with Okung here.

by Bestjagfan on Mar 2, 2010 5:05 PM EST reply actions

I understand that Okung could help the Redskins

Buy I think there’s a huge dropout from Berry and Okung. No way you draft Okung unless you have him graded higher, which I doubt. That’s drafting strictly for need.

It

Just comes down to their draft board, but I’d have Okung over Berry at four. Just my opinion. Like I said, Berry is a solid pick.

You need to

draft for need some when you have an impatient owner. Regardless, the value probably resides with Okung because of premium position. and the crazy thing about the Washington OL, is that it could even get worse if they don’t get younger very soon.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 3, 2010 3:02 AM EST up reply actions

Their first pick will be...

Defensive line/linebacker. Shanahan has made it clear they will be switching to a 3/4 defense.

I'd don't like this pick

but it should free up more people later.
