Aaron Kampman, can he produce?

Aaron Kampman has been an amazing DE, and may still be an amazing DE. But no one knows until training camp. He has supposedly been signed for a 4-year 26 mil 11 mil guranteed contract, is it worth it? I think so, he sounds like he can produce, in his latest conference, he sounded confident. I think he will supply the needs to put the Jags pass rush over the top. Even if he can't produce for our team, maybe he can influence our players like Torry Holt did last year, but then a4-year contract would be too long. I think it was a good sign, what do you think?

I'm sure quite a few people are with the Gene Smith conference call
Either way, if Gene thinks he is worth the cash, I’ll accept it for right now. Other than Brian Russell, he’s done a good job with free agents.

He has 26 million reasons why he needs to produce
If he can’t, he’s gone. Weaver won’t pay him that much to “mentor” other players. Thats what Del Rio is for.
i know he wont mentor for 4 years, but he can mentor this year, and maybe next year, hes not expected to fully produce this year because an ACL injury take 1 full year to heal normally, Kampman thinks he’ll be rdy by training camp, so we’ll have to see

Yeah
Like you said, we’ll have to see. Maybe he can help Harvey a little. But him and Groves have been in the league for 2 years now, so it’s not like they’re rookies. They have experience, now they just need to keep working and start producing.
but him being a key player to the jags and a good player means o-line would concentrate more on him and others can sneak in and sack the qb

But to do that
they need to start winning the individual battles, and that’s something that didn’t happen last year
Worth remembering
… that after his 1st season, Kampman’s sack totals were LESS than those of Harvey right now, and pretty close to those of Groves. Harvey/Groves may not be rookies, but most DEs only start to blossom in their 3rd year. It’s a tough position to learn. In Kampmans’s FIFTH season, he broke into double figures for the 1st time.
1st Year Sacks 2nd Year Sacks 3rd Year Sacks
Kampman 0.5 2 4.5
Groves 2.5 0 ??
Harvey 3.5 2 ??
Heh. Here:
Sacks by year
Kampman; 1st: 0.5, 2nd: 2, 3rd: 4.5
Groves: 1st: 2.5, 2nd: 0, 3rd: N/A
Harvey: 1st: 3.5, 2nd: 2, 3rd: N/A
And very good points. A lot of fans are frustrated because they (Harvey and Groves) we expensive picks and were expected to produce quickly. Kampman was a 4th round pick, so most gave him leeway. I agree that we should wait and see what we get from Harvey and Groves this year.

Was Kampman even a starter?

Kampman's first few seasons
Season 1: 6 starts, 0.5 sacks
Season 2: 10 starts, 2.0 sacks
Season 3: 16 starts, 4.5 sacks
Season 4: 16 starts, 6.5 sacks
Season 5: 16 starts, 15.5 sacks
Progression, and time to learn the position.
Interestingly, after 2 seasons Groves has matched Kampman’s sack total, but with only 7 starts (as opposed to 16).
Kampman did not start until the 2005 season, in which he had double digit numbers
He wasn’t that good before that. I recall being upset we re-signed him that year, but kind of ate my words on that one.
I understand why many of you have concerns because he’s coming off an ACL. One thing that seperates Kampman from many other DE’s though, is that Kampman does not rely on speed, agility, and athleticism to get to the QB. He relies very little on his legs. Kampman excells at bull rushing and technique. I may be biased, but in his prime, Kampman was the best bullrushing DE I’ve seen in a very long time. Not the best all around DE, but best bull rusher.
Very Strong Upper body + Excellent technique = Less of a factor the ACL brings him down.

Really?
Then the official stats on NFL.com are incorrect. They have him as starting 16 games from his 3rd season onwards. 2005 was season 5.
2005 was season 3 he was a rookie in 2002 this will be his 8th year

I think he can produce if healthy
but with most of his youth behind him and playing a division where it’s harder to get to the QB, I don’t think his numbers will be like those in GB. He doesn’t get to play the Lions twice a year, which is good for nearly 3 sacks a year for him. He usually gets his sacks in bunches; and, usually he gets them against mediocre teams at best.
That being said, you gotta be good against teams you’re supposed to beat too. And AK is a professional that will be a steady force on the field once he gets over his injury.
Still, I’m surprised that he starting walking without a limp 7 days after having his knee surgery. That’s impressive.
Totally not true man. This is Aaron Kampman, not Jared Allen.
Against the Lions, yes….AK is due 2 or 3 sacks. Otherwise, he consistently gets to the QB. Another thing is, you can’t factor in pressure situations to sacks. Even if AK isn’t sacking the QB, he’s in the QB’s face.

Well the bench mark
for DE’s is sacks. We already have a few players that put pressure on the QB. We need finishers, and it just so happens that AK gets most of his against mediocre OL’s. Trust me I’d like to crown him as the next LT, but I know I would just be fooling myself. Will he help get to Manning a bit more? Yes, I think he will, but I don’t think he will get the sack numbers he has in the past. He’ll be praised if he gets one sack against Peyton after both games.
damn…and were not playing them this year.

Kampman might not be healthy by then
If they want film on him, put in some old Packers film. I’d much rather play them a little later on when he’s 100%.

if you think about it...
Reggie Nelson hasn’t been doing good, but thats because of no pass rush, these receivers keeep going deep on him every play, and he can’t help it. With a pass rush , the receivers won’t have the time to always jumpon Nelson. Therefore Nelson can get better because of a strong pash rush, cuz he’s constantly giving up points.
Ex: The colts. I iknow its hard to sack Peyton, but atleast rush him. Reggie Wayne goesdeep, Reggie Wayne bites on a quick fake, Reggie Wayne is wide open in the endzone. With a strong pass rush, they wont have Wayne going deep as often, because we will be Peyton, therefore they have to rely on short and quick slant routes, and were good at taking those away.
Nelson is doing good because
he has his head to far up in blankety blank not because of the lack of pressure.

This
Also, keep in mind that every player on the defense suffers from a lack of a good pass rush. For some reason, though, Nelson looked the worst. I love Reggie, and will support him every moment he plays. But he just needs to get smart.

now we will have more even talent on the d-line because henderson has great talent. knighton is showing us some good stuff, and hes pretty good. no DEs until Kampman and hes good, harvey and groves wont be double teamed as much.
this year we might come back as a dominant defense in the league(or next year) We need a beter FS, 1 DE, and maybe an OLB

WE ARE FACING THE BROWNS, SKINS, BILLS, RAIDERS, AND CHEIFS!!!!!!!!!! 2-3 × 5=10-15 sacks thanks Jabooty

his things starts out a negative message and endspossitive?
by rhettchrystal on Mar 10, 2010 7:34 PM EST up reply actions
If he's playing
RE he’s unlikely to get any sacks against the Browns.(Unless Seneca Wallace decides to run around like crazy)
The Skins may have a new LT, as well as the Bills. And the Chiefs really improved at LT with Albert playing much better down the stretch last season. Shoot, even the Raiders could have a new LT. Though I imagine whoever they pick will probably be schooled by AK.
