Two 1st round DT's - A Comparison

Hey fellow Jag fans, I thought I'd throw together a post with some interesting stats. Below we'll compare stats for two DT's taken in the 1st round of the NFL Draft!

Player A

83 Tackles

33 TFL

14.5 Sacks

4 Passes defensed

2 Forced fumbles

2 Fumble recoveries

1 INT

18 hurries

Combine Numbers:

40-Yard Dash: 5.04

Bench Press: 23

Vertical Jump: 30.5

Broad Jump: 9'6

Three-Cone: 7.32

Player B

Career Stats:

195 Tackles

26 TFL

16 Sacks

7 Passes defensed

4 Forced fumbles

4 Fumble recoveries

1 blocked kick

1 INT

11 hurries

Combine Numbers:

40-Yard Dash: 4.87

Bench Press: 21

Vertical Jump: 35.5

Broad Jump: 9'08

Three-Cone: 7.15

Who's who?

Player A, Gerald McCoy, was selected 3rd overall by Tampa Bay.

Player B, Tyson Alualu, is the newest Jaguar.

Alualu at number 10 is a classic "Crazy Gene" pick, but I think these numbers are compelling. I'm no stat-fanatic, but considered in light of the quality of teammates each player had, as well as the competition that they faced, I can't see much that favors McCoy in a direct comparison.

I'm not going to go out on a limb to say Alualu is going to be a better player or anything like that, but taking someone with this elite production, as well as superior measureables and intangibles, at 10 might not have been such a reach.

Great post

The stats are a little skewed by the fact that McCoy only played 3 seasons, but you can’t argue with the combine stats.

Not sure on the number of seasons played

I relied on wikipedia for McCoy’s stats, they seemed to indicate he played four years. Apologies if I’ve skewed the facts! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_McCoy

He redshirted and came out after his junior season.

Alualu played as a true freshman and left after his senior season.

Makes sense

To really get a comparison we’d need to account for quality of team mates, quality of competition, and either games played/snaps, etc. Just wanted to get the idea out there that there’s lots to like.

In conclusion, remember, tape don’t lie! :)

Thanks for the post. Rec'ed

I think that the Jag’s front office was honestly in a good position to take a player who all the teams had kept quiet on.

Nice post

The more I read on Alualu the more encouraged I become.

If you were to watch film...

but had the team colors removed, Alualu would impress more than most. It was frustrating not to trade down and pick up some extra picks but who knows if someone else had Alualu high on their boards. The Broncos were able to trade down but still took 2 players projected to go in the 2nd round or later in Tebow and the receiver from GT. I heard that the Bronco fan base was disappointed in the Tebow pick.

Shows that Alualu plays every snap as hard as he can, and even in the combine.l He worked his ass off

Tyson can run faster and jump higher then McCoy, but he needs more muscle

by rhettchrystal on Apr 23, 2010 9:44 AM EDT reply actions

He benched 24 reps at his Pro Day.

What I like most about Alualu

From watching tape, when he gets to the quarterback he tosses them to the ground ridiculously hard, it gets me excitied. The pick is growing on me and many others, a great complement to Pot Roast. Pot Roast and King Tyce.

The comment that he lacks strength.....

He is running over offensive linemen. Yes he has a nice swim move, but in a few plays on that film, he simply runs them over. True, only part of that is strength, but part of it is getting into the lineman before he can even get set, and then delivering a hit so hard it takes him off his feet. I am smelling a huge find here!!!
I would like to say that the reaction of Gerald McCoy was simply awesome last night! That sums up what sports, dreams, hard work, and dedication are all about. Great stuff!

Great pass rushers have to have a set of moves. Dwight Freeney is known for his spin, but everything he does works off his first step/bull rush. I love the active hands, rip, and swim he shows. Look at Kampman – late round pick that just put his nose to the grindstone and put it all together.

They do actually have

very similar games, Alualu and Kampman.

Agreed

Good leverage, strong first step, and a bull rush you can build off of. Powerful, active hands.

Imagine...

Rotating Alualu around on the line, from DT to De, on any given play…Teams would be going nuts trying to figure out where he is going to be coming from and scheming just for him. This would allow for kampman, harvey, knighton, and henderson to all roam around more freely. I am assuming that Alualu is as good as he looks in his highlights.
