GM GENE SMITH IS REALLY NOT THAT GOOD OF A GM

WAKE UP JACKSONVILLE

Star-divide

people think Gene did good with our picks last year with Cox and Knighton but i tell you this they started only because they had no competion…Cox who else is gonna compete for the starting CB position when nobody is nothing better than 3rd string at best. And Knighton he only had to beat out a old Rob Mier who was never great as a starter and in some other teams would just be consider a regular “GUY”…so just because they started last year dont mean it was a great pick up….Cox was the 2nd worst CB in the league for passes thrown against him and passes completed against him almost 70% completion rate the QB’s had against him…is that really a great pick? Knighton was in that line up several times when teams ran right at him and QB’s set in the pocket with all day to throw,,,and he did not win many one on one match ups…so i ask is that a great pick???? people say Cox had alot of picks for a rookie…i remind you that so did Reggie Nelson but now look at him…dont judge a pick off one “OK” year and just because they started….because the truth is neither one of them would have started for probaly 85% of the other teams in the league….so i will sit back in wait and see if our picks turn out to be better then ones we passed up on like Michael Oher went late 1st round and only gave up 4 sacks last year….now see how many our all pro tackles gave up…Gene draft “SAFE GUYS” when the other GM’s are drafting Elite pro bowl caliber players….You guys need to stop being happy with getting a OK guy and start wanting an Elite guy….if Tyson come in and start all 16 games and give us 40 tackles and 3 sacks…everybody would say Gene was right to get him…those numbers are just ok but not for a great DT. and dont say give him time b/c it has been several rookies who have come in to the league and put up pro bowl numbers there rookie year…Just open up and realize our organization dont have 3-5 years for these guys to develope into good players by that time…Jacksonville want have a team....

another note to the author

before you jump into traffic of course…take a look at some film on alualu, tell me he won’t be a huge disruption to the opposing QB. this guy will make all the players around him better, and opposing offenses worse.

by hermannn on Apr 25, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

So let me get this straight

You just joined this blog today for the first time and you’re gonna come on here and not only insult Gene Smith and all of us who believe in him, but you’re gonna do that while getting your FACTS WRONG???
Cox competed with and won the starting job from Brian Williams. Eugene Monroe beat out Tra Thomas and Eben Britton won the job over Tony Pashos.
Get off the Mel Kiper bandwagon douche. Big names don’t always equal elite players. Go find somewhere else to spout your mindless drivel.

Maybe you should check out steelers game where oher gave up like 5 sacks by himself

the author is the type

that posts this kind of regurgitated garbage on espn boards, jags message board, and yahoo. all of those sites make me believe that comment sections on all sites should be banned. get that trash out of here.

i also like

How he sees “the blind side” and thinks Oher is better than Monroe.

Author is a moron

Aside from all the football reasons that you are a moron. You should learn how to write before posting on here, try capitalization, punctuation, and perhaps paragraphs. This website has maintained a pretty high level of discourse prior to you getting here. Return to ESPN.com or SI.com and spew your ignorance on their forum.

The Truth Hurts

stats dont lie….do your homework….hey “HER” OR “MAN” or whatever you are do you watch any other games or research any other plays then the JAGS??? And Monroe did not have better stats than Oher….so until you can prove that the numbers are lying you are wrong….And to JAGHACK…Cox didn’t beat out Brian Williams…they knew he was getting cut b/c he was not worth the money….i guess next you gonna say Tyson is gonna beat out Big John…its the same thing…he is already on his way out the door so there is no competion….to the rest of the haters…you fat, sloppy never played football in your life wanna be know it all…GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

You have out done us all, I yield to your superior intellect and football knowledge. I hope the Jags will bring you in to replace Gene, so we can get back to the days of drafting the likes of Reggie Williams and Matt Jones.

by Kingfysh on Apr 25, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Really

Because your boy Gene was right there scouting those same picks that were bust…..do your homework and tell me what was Gene before he became our GM?

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Gene

Like you said, he was scouting, he didn’t have the final say like he does now, in all honesty, the draft is over and we don’t have much choice other than just having faith that he knows what he’s doing and we seem to do better drafting on D anyway!!

by Sean Bowen on Apr 25, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

and i will let it go….hell i already have my season tickets…so i just need to shut up and be supportive…but i had to get it off my chest….i am sorry if i upset some fans of the team i love….

just remember to come back

at the end of the year and let us know what you think about all the picks, both last years and this years, after the season is underway.

You are correct. My screen name is misspelled. I thought it was a clever little play on Kingfish, or even King Fish, but I guess that wasn’t obvious enough for you.

by Kingfysh on Apr 25, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry

i am just upset with the draft but just like you i am a fan and a season ticket holder…i just want us to do everything we can to keep our team….was i wrong for venting…yes and for that i am sorry

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll reciprocate...

I apologize for over reacting and defending the veteran contributors on this sight. Go Jags!

by Jaggernaut on Apr 25, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I am still a Jag at the end of the day

and i will probaly be the guy that sit next to you and cheer at the game for our JAGS

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Just curious...

Even if you’re not sold on last years draft, isn’t it a bit premature to just Smith so harshly? Or is it that your life isn’t turning out exactly like you planned? If it makes you feel any better, even though he never said it, your father really did love you. And if you are depressed, stay strong because it’s only a month or so until school is out and your junior high will be out for the summer.

by Jaggernaut on Apr 25, 2010 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

LOL

Thats a good one….i am done with it. I vented i apologized like a real MAN and if thats not good for you then maybe you the one that need some love…not me

but if you didn’t see my apology , here it is again. Sorry too.

My Braves have lost 4 straight to the Phillies and Mets..

and that’s the best excuse I can come up with for my anger today.

by Jaggernaut on Apr 25, 2010 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

i am a Braves fan too even when they suck….lol

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

TO ALL I REALLY AM SORRY FOR THIS POST.

But i would be lying if i am not scared we are going to loose this team thats why i guess i wanted some names for once.

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

Strangely enough

The only reason I worry for the future of this team in Jacksonville is because too many “fans” think the way you do. It will be terribly sad if this team has to relocate to LA…. and the LA fans get to reap the benefits of the very very solid roster Gene smith is putting together.

by KeithG on Apr 26, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

instead of

" venting", or in your case, spewing BS, watch some film on your newest Jaguars. If you aren’t sold that’s fine but at least watch.

by hermannn on Apr 25, 2010 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

i did and he really does look good

see i already have my tickets…i am just afraid nobody else will watch some of his film and buy tickets to the game

On another note

Do any of you think we should go after any veteran free agents???

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 4:06 PM EDT reply actions

Safety

Since Hen is on the block anyway maybe we could get a good safety for him???

by Sean Bowen on Apr 25, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if there are any out there that would make a difference

We got Kampman, and Morrison in a trade, but I don’t see anybody out there that would be worth going after.

but I have always bought into positive thinking. So keep the faith!

by Jaggernaut on Apr 25, 2010 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

What about Sharper????

He is still available i think he cant cover like he use to….but he still is a ball hawk…if we can get pressure with our new front i think he can come in and have atleast 5 INT.

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

Sharper

I was thinking that too but I don’t think Gene likes these stop-gap kind of moves-Jerry Porter!!!!

by Sean Bowen on Apr 25, 2010 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

Darren Sharper did too well last year to take a contract for veteran minimum. I don’t think he’s going to be worth the price it will likely take to get him.

by Kbot on Apr 26, 2010 6:36 AM EDT up reply actions

The last leadr we had

in the secondary was DD….and i think thats something we need for the young guys a leader that has won super bowls and has faced some of the best.

by 100%real on Apr 25, 2010 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

DD

DD was the man, we need another thumper like that!!

by Sean Bowen on Apr 25, 2010 4:26 PM EDT reply actions

Deon Grant

I was thinking they might go after him, he was solid enough but he’s signed somewhere else and I don’t see Sharper signing for the minimum

by Sean Bowen on Apr 25, 2010 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Nelson

You think we’ll start the season with him??

by Sean Bowen on Apr 25, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

btw you had a point with Oher, Eugene gave up 9 sacks and he only gave up 5, I still think he’s gonna be a good one though!

This is the most bizarre stream of comments I have ever seen

It started with insults that reciprocated into full on personal attacks. Then on a dime it turned into kumbaya session and an intelligent football conversation.

True

… and for the record, my reply to one of your comments above was not meant as an insult… but rather my concern that too many Jags “fans” think we cannot be competitive without drafting “names”.

by KeithG on Apr 26, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

If it were any other site

It wouldn’t turn out like that, just more personal attacks.

I’m hoping for a great year from Rashard too!!

by Sean Bowen on Apr 25, 2010 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

Lets talk about REACHES

Im not gonna sit here and pretend to know what the future holds but i can look into the past and get an idea of the future. I remember whem we drafted Rashean Mathis at # 7 in the second round a nobody CB from a nowhere school ( Bethune-Cookman ) in 2003 that turned out pretty well. Then theres that short RB we got back in 2006 the 28th pick in the second round every one including Kyper said he was too short to play in the NFL wouldnt be able to block at this elite level ( ask Shawne Merriman ) what was his name again….Oh yeahhhh Maurice Jones-Drew.Look opinions are like assholes every ones got one but i would like to kick back and see what happens

by woody32095 on Apr 25, 2010 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

My reaction was totally like this when we got Alualu

then i realized, I’m just a fan with an opinion. Gene Smith is paid to do thus and devotes countless hours to it. He’s never failed us before, and I will not doubt him.

Big house hold names!

6 out of 10 times make it in the NFL. 1 out of 10 become HOF. With that being said you have a 4 in 10 shot in your potential star is a productive starter. So give me no name love of the game players all day. IN GENE WE TRUST

by ctjags on Apr 25, 2010 10:23 PM EDT reply actions

OOPS

Wow huge typo should read DON’T make it for long in the nfl.

by ctjags on Apr 25, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Rediculous

Even if this guy does produce we DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE HIM SO DAMN EARLY. Trade back in the 1st collect your Tyson ALualu pick a 2nd round up for trading back and then pick up Taylor Mays. We didn’t draft a safety for the 2nd straight year when we needed one. Nice evaluations GM and scouts. I believe they are intentionally doing this to move our team. One of the worst drafts i have seen.

by 2talljag on Apr 26, 2010 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

stupid

Whats with the no name school draft class of 2010 hahahaha. I mean i know some good Highschool players Gene, should we draft them as well. Damn Gene hits on one no name school with Durant out of Hampton and decides to make our ENTIRE draft like that. I"m ashamed to be a fan right now.
