Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

2010 UDFA Profile: Kyle Bosworth, LB, UCLA

Last year, the Jaguars made their final cuts and left 7 linebackers on the roster. With Daryl Smith, Kirk Morrison, Justin Durant, Freddy Keiaho and Russell Allen as the probably locks, it is very possible, if not probably, that the Jaguars could see another linebacker follow in the footsteps of Russell Allen by making the roster despite going undrafted. Battling for the final spot(s) are undrafted free agents Jacob Cutrera, Kyle Bosworth, Aaron Morgan and second year player Bryan Smith. Although it is very early in the offseason, the two that have been the most impressive at mini-camp by most accounts are Cutrera and Bosworth.

Star-divide

Kyle Bosworth was a redshirt senior at UCLA and a stalwart on their defense side-by-side with his twin brother, Korey who is now a member of the Denver Broncos. Football runs in the family as the two are the nephews of former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth. Although Kyle was the one coming off of a knee injury that cost him the majority of his junior year, he was considered by most to be the better draft prospect of the two twins. While the two have insanely similar measurables, Kyle was the more productive of the two at UCLA, and as such, was invited to the combine while his brother Korey was not.

At 6'1, 236 pounds Bosworth has adequate size for an NFL linebacker and has speed that is good enough to make it in the league at 4.62. The reason behind him going undrafted is probably due in part to an injury history during his years at UCLA. An injury to his thumb cost him four games his freshman year while a sprained knee cut ten games off the end of his senior year. He was granted another year of eligibility in which he managed to stay healthy and earn an honorable mention for the All Pac-10 team.

According to the Experts:

NFL.com

Pros

High-motor player with adequate size and speed. Reads fast and closes with precise footwork. Possesses great instincts dropping back into pass coverage and jumps underneath routes. Uses hands to shed blocks, seeks out contact and wraps up the ball carrier.

Cons

A bit stiff through the hips with limited range and fluidity. Athletic limitations are exposed in man coverage, where he struggles to stay with receivers. Over-aggressive at times and does not always recognize screens and draws. Sometimes smothered by blocks due to a narrow base. Gets caught out of position too often in run support.

RookieDraft

Pros

Bosworth plays with a high level of intensity on every plays and keeps fighting until the whistle blows.  He has definitely overachieved to get where he is and gives consistent effort no matter the situation.

Cons

He is a limited athlete with short arms, stiff hips, and limited awareness in short zones.  He will be a liability in coverage and he doesn’t shed blocks very well.

Which one is better at coverage and which one is better at blitzing?

I don't want to say one or the other with so little tape to compare

We’ll just have to wait until training camp and preseason to find out.

Keiaho

I don’t think he’s a lock for anything. I think the only 4 are Allen, Durant, Morrison and Smith.
