Comcast War Room: Why Ryan Mallett won't be a Jaguar next year
As announced previously in this space, Comcast has generously agreed to support the best NFL community around -- us! As part of that effort, between now and the end of the 2010 NFL season Comcast will be sponsoring a variety of special editorial and interactive features on our site. They begin today with the launch of the Comcast HD War Room, your weekly destination for key draft insight and opinion. Welcome!
If you're like me and the words "Draft" and "Burnout" never seem to fit together, you've undoubtedly already teased yourself by looking at the various 2011 Mock Drafts that dot the internet landscape. I understand it's an exercise in futility to try and figure out the 2011 Draft before a down has even been played, but there has been one glaring issue that can be beaten back even at this point.
Quite a few mocks have pegged the Jaguars to take Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett. It is the same kind of lazy pick that had many of these same people peg Tim Tebow to the Jaguars last year. Have the Jaguars all but set up a giant sign saying they're taking a QB next year? Yes. However, nothing Gene Smith has done would indicate he would take Mallett.
Mallett was arrested in May 2009 for public intoxication in Fayetteville. As I've said before, I would like to know just how plastered a starting QB has to be to get arrested in a college town. Not to mention there are a plethora of rumors about Mallett that make you think he has a 10 cent head to go along with his $10 million arm and you can see why Gene Smith would quickly take Mallett off his board.
Do I fully believe the Jaguars will take a QB in the first round next April? Yes. Is there any chance that QB will be Ryan Mallett? No.

True, but...
He was originally a Michigan QB, which is considered a positive.

I wouldn't be so quick
to say the Jaguars will take a QB in the first round. I agree that’ll draft a QB next year, but I’m not sure it’ll be a first rounder. Too many variables at this time, namely where the team is drafting.
They'll probably be drafting top 15
There will definitely be a QB they like available (most likely Ponder)
Why most likely Ponder?
I keep hearing the Jags are most likely to take Ponder. Did we learn nothing from the Tebowpallooza? I’m not saying Ponder’s out of the question, he’s just no more likely than any other QB depending upon the Jaguars’ draft slot.

At 15 who's left
Luck, Locker, and Mallett will be gone by then. Ponder is the 4th best QB on the board and expected to be a first round pick. Of course we still have a season to be played yet and there’s that kid from Delaware (can’t think of his name off the top of my head) who could jump up.
As of right now, the Jags are picking 10-15 and I only see Ponder being available at that spot. Also don’t forget the Jags have forced themselves into picking up a QB in the first round by not drafting a QB since Leftwich in 2003
So many assumptions in there
It’s certainly possible, but you’re making everything sound so set in stone.
“As of right now, the Jags are picking 10-15.” The way I see it, they’re picking 1-32.
“Luck, Locker, and Mallett will be gone by then. Ponder is the 4th best QB on the board and expected to be a first round pick.” Who knows what could happen next season. Ponder could come out on top for all we know.
I do think the Jaguars will take a QB, I just don’t understand this assumption that Ponder is it.

I have to admit, it’s funny. The fanbase is doing the same thing with Ponder many in the media did with Tebow.

No no no
I have yet to hear a single threat of abandoning the team if Ponder isn’t picked. BAP regardless of school, hometown, race, or religion is all I want to see. If that is Ponder, then cool. If it isn’t that’s just as cool. I just hope he doesn’t win against the Jags. I’d slap an FSU fan for calling for a boycott. It was bad enough with Tebow, it better not happen again.

Um,
We didn’t draft Tebow so… Reverse boycott??

Nope
I refuse to listen to reason. I don’t care if Ponder has a screwed up throwing motion, lack of ability to see the field, and is religious. If the Jags don’t draft him, I will never buy tickets again. (end sarcasm)
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
Well, I can't fault your logic
It makes perfect sense. You are wise and a scholar. Count me in too.

It's the draft there's tons of assumptions
I think the Jags finish 9-7, miss the playoffs, and pick in the 10-15 range.
Also I believe the Jags have shoehorned themselves into picking a QB round one. Barring any injuries and surprise seasons to those who aren’t scouts, I think you’re looking at Ponder, Devlin (DE QB), K. Moore (Boise St)
Also 9-7 means JDR is fired and most likely Garrard is gone as well.
And yes there is a ton of assumptions here, but it’s June and there’s not much else to do
Have you seen him play?
I would be thrilled to see him get drafted to Jax, and it has nothing to do with him being a Seminole. Unlike Tebow, Ponder can actually throw the ball.
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
Don't get me wrong
I really like Ponder and I’d be stoked to see him in teal. I’m just not gonna sit here and say it’s the “most likely” scenario. It’s still completely up in the air.

I don't think he's a lock either
Because he still has a year left to prove how good he is. I really dislike trying to see how the draft is going to turn out this early, because it seems like half of the players we think are going high end up going a lot lower.
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
if anyone questions this statement
then just look at this year. Clausen was a top ten pick and McCoy was a first pick in the second round. Where did they go?
The best answer to it all is Snead before last season was rated as a top ten pick going into the season and ended up going where? There is no point in thinking about top QB choices because you have no idea how their season will pan out or if they will be injured. The only thing that is certain is if Gene picks up a QB next year(and that is an if) then he will be the face of the franchise and will be the best pick that is out there. In Gene we trust.
They will draft a QB
The franchise has gone the longest out of any franchise w/o drafting a QB (7 years) they are drafting a QB. The question is just which round are they drafting him
Arkansas.....Cocaine....Sounds familiar
I think while we and everyone else hope and think how logic it is to draft a QB. I think Gene will go and draft 2-3 DBs (Safeties most likely) cuz that’s how he rolls.

Honorable mention
Casey Keenum (Gene watched him all year last year; and reportedly liked him a lot) and my darkhorse Mr. Clutch – Ricky Stanzi

Stanzi
Doesn’t seem like a pro QB to me.

All of Keenum’s throws are less than 5 yards.

I hate Stanzi
Not just because he plays for that annoying Iowa team but becuase he has horrible decision making skills which lead to a couple 3+ INT games

Grab
Jerrod Johnson or Blaine Gabbertt in the second. Simple as that ;)

Jerrod Johnson
I’m surprised more people aren’t hyping this guy; maybe because A&M is a shell of its former self. I’m an Aggie, and I intend to watch Johnson pretty closely this year.
Ignore the hype; look at the results.

Yeah
He could end up being one of the best QBs out of the upcoming class. Live arm, pretty good accuracy, good runner, great kid. His stock could soar if he improves his coachable mechanics even further.

Bestjagfan:
I highly doubt Gabbert will go pro if he is considered a 2nd round prospect.

I hear
What you are saying. But where a player is considered to go and where he goes are two different things. I saw Donavan Warren all over the place in mocks going in the first and second round.
May be some wishful thinking in there as well on my part ;)
