What About Chad Pennington?

I just read an article on ESPN describing how Chad Pennington is getting used to life as a backup QB, as the Dolphins focus their efforts on developing Chad Henne.  Obviously we all know about the bum shoulder, but the guy has a 66% career completion percentage, has won in the past, and could be at least a very capable backup to Garrard.  In the article it mentions that "Pennington may not even be the primary backup, as he battles with Tyler Thigpen for the backup spot".  If this is the case and the Dolphins are happy with Thigpen, could we get him on the cheap (6th rounder)?

I understand we made the similar move last year for McCown and I know it's very early, but it's sounding like the QB's have not been sharp so far in camp, which is starting to worry me a bit. Again, just a random thought, but I thought this was at least more realistic than the "trade Garrard to the Vikings" talks.

What

“trade Garrard to the Vikings talks”? Man… Garrard could do really well on that team. The Vikings are like a slightly better version of our 07 team if Garrard was on their team. And he definitely fits their system.

hah

yeah just saw some stuff on twitter today, nothing of substance, just people saying that it would be a good opportunity to get rid of garrard since the vikings could be looking for a qb

careful what you wish for

He’s the type of quarterback who would go elsewhere and win a ring.

Really?

What makes you say he could go elsewhere and win a ring? Maybe if he was the QB of the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens.

Pennington’s arm is crap now. A wet paper towel could put more velocity on a ball than he could.

I do not see why Pennington is a better option than McCown.

McCown actually could probably start for one of the crappier teams in the league, while Chad Pennington is purely a backup caliber player and probbaly would struggle connecting on passes more than ten yards out

i don't know why mccown gets so much love

he hasn’t done anything in the NFL…and just because he’s just something different than garrard doesn’t mean he’s any good

Career Stats
McCown: 59.3 comp , 1,600+ yards 9TDs and 10 INTs
Pennington: 66.1 comp 17,000+ yards 102 TDs and 69 INTs

that’s a pretty big difference

I agree

but you have to realize that Pennington has no arm and has been someone who has lost his starting job 2 times and that clearly says something about his level of play. it is not very good. At least with Mccown you have a guy 5 years younger with a better arm and with something to prove. All of those make him the better option to backup Garrard

+1

McCown has done nothing.

oops!

Actually, I was agreeing with Jagsrok9008, Pennington is not someone I would get excited about and McCown has played for a dysfunctional team at Tampa Bay.

I like

The idea of Pennington as a backup. I think this would be a good place to finish his career. His arm is crap now but he is still extremely accurate and could win games.

But the idea is

to at least have the threat of the long ball.

Without it, MJD will always see 8 and 9 guys in the box and the running game will suffer.

by pksiv on Aug 4, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

well at least with garrard

we have the threat of an overthrown long ball in the middle of the field!

by jlana24 on Aug 4, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

No No No. Would you realllllllly want to change your backup QB for, basically, just the sake of having an older, disabled QB? I’m thinkin’ that McCown has a career ahead of him, while Pennington is going in the opposite direction. That doesn’t bode well if you’re shelling out some serious moolah, ducks, quackers, whatever, for him. Just doesn’t sound like the kind of move that Emperor Smith is inclined to make.

On another note, I’m off to Burger King for some chicken fries w/sweet & sour sauce with an order of funnel cake sticks on the side. Mmmmm… good for my diabetes, right? HA!

When you're released after 3 years

because they traded for a guy name John Beck, I think it says something about your ability to play at the NFL level.

He’s also had Surgery on both hips.

by pksiv on Aug 4, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I like

Brennan as well. He did well in the pre-season the past few years. But he had surgery and I don’t think he could ever be a full time starter. In my opinion he would be a good career backup though

uh, no….Testaverde was better then Pennington at 43 then Chad is now, it’s not his fault though, his throwing shoulder is literally gone, seriously hes risking a lame shoulder playing still, unless he becomes an ambidextous passer, the most he could do is some within 10 yard passing game and a lot of handoffs
