Jacksonville Jaguars Update their Depth Chart
The Jacksonville Jaguars updated their depth chart on Jaguars.com this morning.
What are some of the surprises?
I think the first thing to note is that Vince Manuwaiis listed as the starting right guard. This shouldn't really be much of a surprise given Manuwai and Smiley's performance on Saturday night.
Cecil Newton is listed as the back up center, ahead of John Estes. I assume this is because of the injury to Estes, as I feel he's outplayed Newton.
Zach Potter is listed as the 3rd tight end over Zach Miller, who I feel is really the No. 2 TE. I have to believe this is due to injury reasons limiting Zach Miller's play time.
At the wide receiver position, Troy Williamson is listed as the primary back up telling me he's the team's No. 3 wide receiver and should make the roster. The most interesting thing about the wide receiver is where Tiquan Underwood is listed. He's behind both Clarence Denmark and Kassim Osgood, furthering my belief he will be relegated to the practice squad once again.
At the safety position, to no one's surprise the starters are listed as Anthony Smith at SS and Gerald Alexanderat FS. Reggie Nelson, who no doubt lost the starting position on Saturday, is listed as the primary back up ahead of converted corner Tyron Brackenridge.
At linebacker, veteran Teddy Lehmanand new comer Alvin Bowen are listed as primary back ups along with Russell Allen.
On the defensive line, Jeremy Mincey is listed as Harvey's primary back up at DE and Walter Curry is ahead of Leger Douzable at defensive tackle however, I do not think Walter Curry makes the roster over Douzable.
It's hard to really gage what this new depth chart all means, but what are your feelings/thoughts?
Mind you, this is still considered an "unofficial" depth chart.

Do you think it’s possible they are doing this to hide some players when they waive them? Like you said, how in the hell is Denmark over Underwood and Curry over Douzable? Can’t fathom that thought. I don’t think Curry can go to the PS, can he?

Curry
If you are looking for a big man to take Knighton’s place, I think Curry is our best option.

Isn’t Ellison bigger then Curry?

He doesn't
play as big as his size indicates.
Personally I think our 4 best DT’s are Knighton, Alualu, Douzable, and Curry.
Personally I thought Ellison was ahead of Douzable. However, I do think Ellison had a better game than Douzable against Tampa.
I agree on the 4 best DT’s part.

I don't think it's accurate
Deji Karim third on the depth chart as a KR?
What’s the deal with Austen Lane? He’s fourth for one of the DE positions. Will he get cut? There’s a lot on there that doesn’t make sense to me.
I think you have to keep Brackenridge, and yet he seems to be a bubble type guy looking at the chart.
I don’t know.
Maybe they moved some guys up to make them look better if they were looking to possibly trade some of them…? IDK

As far as I know
not starting rookies are always placed in the back of the DC.

Aside from
Lane’s athleticism, I thought he was pretty underwhelming. He has A LOT to learn still. Keep in mind he’s coming from a small program and has had hardly seen the field since getting hurt in OTA’s.
And Karim may just be 4th on the chart because of his injury. If Scotty McGee keeps playing well I fear Karim may see the IR.
If DK is healthy....
I think he is enough better than McGee that we need him out there as much as possible. I am grateful we have both, but I think Karim is better.
How in the HELL is Navarre over Ko Quaye??
I think that right there is a direct sign at protecting Quaye if he hits waivers.

Ko
has hardly played. How do we know anything about him. Navarre on the other hand has versatility working in his favor. He plays well on special teams, and he plays both DT and DE.
Maybe he’s hardly played because they’re trying to protect him.
Navarre is awful at DT.
I can give two shits about versatility, if KO is better at DT, then KO is going to be ahead of him at the DT spot on the depth chart. Apparently, if the depth chart is right, then he’s not lol

Greg Jones
With all the speculation about Greg Jones, its worth noting he is still listed as the starter. Although if they were going to release him, they’d probably try to trade him first, and listing someone you’re about to trade as a cut, isn’t very smart from a leverage standpoint. We’ll see…
Agree… If you’re trading him, best to list him as the starter.

Del Rio said he was going to announce the starting 22 today. I wouldn’t read too deep into anything beyond that as far as the new depth chart goes.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

I could be wrong
but I thought he said something about determining who the starting 22 were, not that he would announce it.
I'm a little
surprised that Rod Smith is last on the depth chart. He’s a little weak getting off blocks, but he’s got some nice athleticism. I think he should be first off the bench at WLB.
