Jacksonville Jaguars Roster Cuts and Predictions
By five-o'clock this afternoon the Jacksonville Jaguars will need to cut four players to trim their roster down to 75 players. They only need to cut four because third round pick defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith will hit injured reserved due to the achilles injury he suffered during training camp.
So, what do I think the final roster will look like?
Click the jump to find out.
This is my pre-4th pre-season game roster prediction. It can change quite a bit depending on how Game 4 goes. I'd also like to note that I believe the Jaguars will make moves and have 2-4 players on the roster who are on other teams right now.
Special Teams:
-
P - Adam Podlesh
-
K- Josh Scobee
-
PR - Scotty McGee
-
KR - Deji Karim
-
LS - Jeremy Cain
Quarterbacks:
Backs:
Wide Receivers:
Offensive Line:
Tight End:
-
Zach Miller
Defensive End:
Defensive Tackle:
Linebackers:
Cornerbacks:
Safety:
In all honesty, I expect the Jaguars to pick up a linebacker or two and a safety or two, be it by either trade or waiver wire.
I chose four tight ends, because outside of Lewis the blocking from the tight ends is lackluster. I thought about forcing Brock Bolen on the roster, but a team can't carry 3 RB/FB players and I still feel Greg Jones is the better player and helps the team out more, despite his salary, for this season. It's very likely Bolen winds up on the practice squad.
I believe Reggie Nelson falls in the same boat as Justin Smiley, he's starting or he's cut, and I think both will be cut and/or traded if a team feels like offering up a ham sandwich.
I've been told by some people that the Jaguars will not carry more than 5 wide receivers, else I would have put Underwood on the roster. In this instance I chose Williamson over him, because Underwood can be placed on the practice squad and brought up later if needed.

Aaron Morgan, Cutrera, Estes should be safe. No way they keep Garbage Mincey over Morgan. (IMO) Gilbert and Lehman are both middle LB’s, so yeah, don’t count on them keeping 3 MLB’s.

Alfie
IDK if Luke McCown will make the roster due to the great preseason Luke McGowen is having. So, I think that’s an interesting spot to keep an eye on.

Nice picks, Crow
My roster would look similar if I were GM. I would go with a slightly adjusted LB group. I think I’d find a way to keep Bolen. Also, I’ve seen enough of Williamson. Continuing to hope for his emergence is reminiscent of Matt Jones and Reggie Williams, IMO.
Vae Victis!
The weakest link
This years crop looks better than those of the past several seasons, with one exception.
The QB position is now the weakest link and will result in the same failures as last year.
I find fault in your response...
in the fact that I believe DG has stepped up in his prep and as a leader for this team, and by your own admission, the supporting cast is better. You may list QB as the weakest link (though I would still list defensive secondary at this point), but if the supporting cast has improved, how do you not see the team improve, which will NOT result in the same events as last year?
Because the weakest link is the most important position on the team. The bad decisions will outweight all other improvements.
I don't agree with that....
and only the actual play of the season will prove who was right. To be a good QB takes a minimal amount of support, which I do not think he had last year in terms of receivers and o-line play. With out that minimal amount of support, the QB can not be fairly judged, as decision making is impaired. I believe that to be the case with DG, and that with the improvements to the team, his play will be at a much higher level. But as I said before, we will have to wait for the season to know for sure…
the season will prove who was right
Ah yes, the season will prove who was right. Of course by then it is too late as it has been for too many years now. The only reason DG is still on the roster is because of the obscene overpayment he got for 1 semi-good year. Now it would be too embarassing to get rid of him and that would be the end of JDR too. DG is NOT a leader, never has been and never will be. Doesn’t have the personality for it. But putting that aside, he still makes too many bad decisions, whether its interceptions, receiver selections, or taking sacks.
I find fault in your argument in several ways
1) QB is FAR from the teams weakest position.
2) A team would look a lot worse for keeping a guy just because they paid him than they would for cutting a guy the overpaid.
DG is the best we have and help is not on the way. I realize he's not perfect, but I feel a lot better about him at QB than I do the O-Line, DB's and LB's ability to cover a TE.
@agurusguru
The 2000 Ravens weakest link was the QB position… and it turned out just fine for them.
Titans weakest part for the last 3 years was their secondary. BUT, their pass-rush covered it up and made the DB’s look like Pro Bowlers… Well, what happened last year? They got toasted.

Brock will make the roster
On jags monday terry spoke highly of him. said when asked about practice squad said no no no and about trades about them and seamed like no interest trading him as well. I dont know how but he will make the roster.
Coe and Mathis
Cornerbacks: Hope Mathis and Michael Coe stay and play! Talent!
