2010 Roster Cuts: Jaguars Finalize their Roster
The Jacksonville Jaguars have finalized their 53-man roster, with some surprises.
The biggest surprises were safety Gerald Alexander, corner Scott Starks, tight end Ernest Wilford, offensive lineman Kynan Forney, and defensive lineman Atiyyah Ellison.
Here's the rest of the cuts:
Gerald Alexander, Alvin Bowen, Atiyyah Ellison, Kynan Forney, Tony Gilbert, Teddy Lehman, Jeremy Navarre, Kolby Smith, Scott Starks, Ernest Wilford, Troy Williamson, Rod Wilson, Walter Curry, Clarence Denmark, John Matthews, Daniel Baldridge, Mike Caussin,Trevor Harris, Chad Kackert, Ko Quaye, and Bradley Vierling.
From the sounds of it, Kyle Bosworth was placed on IR with a hamstring injury. Quaye and Caussin are expected to make the practice squad.
I'll have my analysis of the cuts tomorrow and try to make some sense of a few of them. I don't understand Don Carey over Scott Starks, at all.
So, that means the roster numbers are:
2 QBs
6 Backs
9 OL
5 WR
3 TE
6 DE
3 DT
5 LB
7 CB
4 S
3 ST

Scott Starks is not a surprise?
That is the biggest shock among them

To me that is the biggets shock
holy moly. I guess we wont be seeing David Jones at FS. He needs to replace Starks now. Better learn the playbook son. Going up against a complicated spread offense week one when Denver comes to town.
I guess the injuries got the best of Starks.
glad you said that...
is it difficult to learn the defensive playbook, or are all defenses (schemes/terminology/etc) the same across the NFL?
I get that offenses use different sets and terminlology, but it seems like Cover 1, Cover 2, Cover 3, Zone, man to man are all the same… what’s the deal?
he needs to put his college degree
to good use in his next career- dude was a huge bust. Fortunatley at the Vikings expense and not ours.

Something is brewing
We’ve cut quite a bit of experience dollars wise and quite a bit of experience in the secondary.
Alexander, Starks, Nelson.
Something is up.
Yeah something is up....
Rebuilding a HORRIBLE secondary. It’s been Mathis and Cox and a lot of nothin.
WTF IS THE INTERNET?!?
Also
Harris made the 53???
Also Don Carey made the final roster….

The fact that Carey is still on this team is Gene’s pride taking precedence and nothing else

He's got ability
I don’t doubt that. But he needs some major work on his game. But he has everything else.
Scotty Starks cut and
he is in. It’s crazy. He is in fact in LOVE with his guys (Which is not always a good thing).
And who will be Knighton’s backup? And who will be the starting FS?

You've done a damn fine job today.
If there’s a BCC tailgate next week, I’ll drop off a John Daly for you.
Carey
There is hidden upside, he has talent.
…or he’ll be cut after another addition or two.
Vae Victis!
I like that
“hidden upside”
Unless we’re the best sandbaggers in the business, not too many guys in the secondary really wowed me this preseason.

it will be a quarterback in the first
And then about 4 safeties

So we are not getting any Safetys? This position is getting scary for us. I hope Smith and whoever starts with him will step up big time.

Maybe
he could develop into a better Gerald Alexander. They have similar skill sets except Tyron has better hands, more ST ability, and he’s a better tackler.
I liked him

That’s just 18 guys; and we need 22.
Ko Quaye is missing from the list as well as McQuistan. Who are the other 2???

He was their nickel back last year
They had a great D last year, so he can’t be awful.

How long do you think it will take him
to learn how defensive system? Game 1 vs Denver is a week away!

Gene is keeping the best players availible
Remember that he liked Gerald Alexander coming out of college and made sure to pick him up last year. Well that makes Alexander one of Gene’s “guys”, so don’t give me this noise that he’s only keeping his “guys”, now that Alexander is gone. On a sadder note I’ll really miss Ernest Wilford, I’ll never forget what he did for this team in 2007.
Coach Crennel, if all of your Coors Lights can talk what happens when you open your fridge? There's generally "Hoopla" involved.

finally someone said it
to praise Gene and then say he only keeps his guys doesn’t even begin to make sense
He’s been consistent
we all knew GA was bad on PA
And all those who look down on me I'm tearing down your balcony
Brock Bolen
Very glad he made it, and really pleased Greg Jones is still on the team, as well. Bolen is a flat out football player. Jones, if he stays healthy, will keep Maurice happy. I am confused about Starks and Alexander, though, and looking forward to seeing what Gene has up his sleeve!
Are you effin kidding me!!!
I swear to the Gods of football! This has got to be joke. I mean really. . . Am I missing something. At least Reggie would come in and turn his back on the tackle. I don’t know maybe I have a really advanced HDTV but Carey doesn’t even show up on my screen. I love my Jags and I love what Gene is doing but WTF!!!!! DON CAREY, DON EFFIN CAREY! Gene you better see something I didn’t!

Matthews
doesn’t really have a spot with Mike Thomas here.
I still kinda wonder who the third receiver will be, if you don’t count Zach Miller.
Zach should play wideout and if hes good be our #2, hes big, he’s fast, and hes got good hands

Why all the love for Scotty Starks?
He has hardly played in the last couple of years due to injury, he is a nickel corner that we traded for, IE it was not a carey for starks it was a jones for starks move. Carey has the physical aspect of the game down he just need more time to develop. The largest question if what do we do at FS?
I praise Gene for making some decisions that literally make me scratch my head then realize that he has put the best players with the most upside on the team than deteriorating veterans.

dont like underwood on the 53
just doesnt seem like a legit wr. id much rather seen williamson in there or even matthews
I don’t understand Alexander being let go along with nelson, though Nelson’s departure does ring of Gene’s hubris. Seriously the man is my fourth cousin, but it is suspicous that nearly all non-UDFA/rookie/1yr cuts were harris picks. The only Harris 1st rdr left is Lewis, though many thought him a bust at times(!). He repeatedly tried to rid himself of Harris picks that weren’t obviously needed to be let go, but really Carey over Starks, Potter over Wilford and Smiley over the not-injured Forney bug me very much. Starks coming off the ACL has lost quite a bit of speed but he is capable of nickel-starting now, and remeber how important he was on ST along with Chad Nkang in 07 and 08!. I hate to say it but it is hubris, Gilbert has lost a bit of his speed with his added weight and age but he is the most capable veteran LB/STer (i.e. not full LB)…I believe Iwuh was taken over him though.
Waber-Jaguar
I know, but GS did try to get rid of him several times. Had it not been for Cullen and that no one else wanted him, he would have been gone easy. I tell you honestly it is hubris, he knows his FB so he isnt killing the team, but there is a major difference between veteran lineups and perpetually 1st year player lineups. Our oldest player is who? Garrard?
Waber-Jaguar
Starks was never healthy enough to play.
If you can’t see the field, you can’t see the field. The end. Wilford is just another pass-catching TE; that’s what Miller is for. Potter’s skill set, on the other hand, is not duplicated elsewhere on the roster. And Gilbert is just…awful. You know what’s supposed to happen when you lose your speed? You get cut. Guess what happened? The guys that lost their speed GOT CUT. That’s not a conspiracy; that’s smart GMing.
And has it maybe occurred to you that the reason that Shack’s picks are getting purged from the roster might be because they were terrible, which is why the Jaguars have had such a bad couple years in the first place?
In Gene We Trust.

I was surprised by a few moves, but...
to get a player AND a pick for Reggie Nelson just blows me away! I’m not saying Gene Smith is God or anything, but I still trust him after these cuts. I think we’re sitting on 9 picks for next April’s draft.
