Jaguars Trade for David Jones, Ship Reggie Nelson to Bengals

According to Adam Schefter, the Jacksonville Jaguars are finalizing a trade that would send former first round pick Reggie Nelson to the Bengals for cornerback David Jones in return.

Jones is entering his 4th season, after being drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 5th round in 2007 out of Wingate. Jones has played in 33 games with the Bengals. Jones was their starting nickel corner for most of last season.

This could spell trouble for Don Carey.

Score!

David Jones should be an upgrade over Nelson for our secondary. Way to go, Gene.

…even if he isn’t meant to be a replacement for Nelson specifically.

Let's be fair:

He had a nice 2007 campaign.(He made the all-rookie team!)
From Peter King Via twitter

RT @Adam_Schefter: Bengals and Jaguars are now finalizing a CB David Jones for S Reggie Nelson trade … Nelson cannot tackle. Period.

Im surprised we even got something in exchange. If David Jones suck, it’s the same! That being said…good luck Reggie! That’s job as we all need to pay rents and eat.

There's no questioning CB depth anymore

Maybe if he’s good enough we can move Rashean to Safety, kill 2 birds with 1 stone?

don't get me started :-)

with his creshendo performance of 2008 drafting – setting this franchise back a minimum of 3-4 years – that guy is public enemy number 1 in my book

So

4 out of 6 Harris 1st round pick is gone apperantly….
And if Harvey didn’t produce this year; he can make it 5 next year….

And how ironic- If Reggie will go to Cincy; on the same day the Bengals cut Matt Jones….

Harvey

Harvey’s still a good run stopper. He just isn’t a pass rusher.

by jermeeee on Sep 4, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s true. But didnt we trade up heavily for him so he could be a premier pass rusher?

yes - we gave up the farm for him

and yes – he was brought in to be the pass rush / sack machine. And if you through in the Quniton Groves give away as well – 2008 may go down as one of the worst drafts in NFL history considering we went into that draft with 11 picks

Which is bad

cause the Jags thought he will be the double digit sackman…

I think if Hart and Lane will not breakpout this year; and Harvey stilll stays the same our 1st 3 round choices will be:
QB; DE; Inerior O-lineman/safety

I got the horrible ironic feeling

We’ll see 2 safeties back to back, a Guard, a Center, and if we’re extremely lucky we take a flyer on a QB in the mid to late rounds.

I was reading your team blog. None is saying David Jones is great, he will be a backup here. I know everyone sees the positive side of things for their own side, but Reggie Nelson was going to get cut because he seriously suck, it’s not even right that he covers well…he doesnt, hes out of position all the time. You got rid of a guy you didn’t want there and got yourselves a new face and new hope, but he is horrible and your team also gave us a conditional pick. We have reason to celebrate this, if you think you do…wait and see. If i’m wrong, i will follow up your team blog and be the first to admit this, but it won’t happen.

jones was getting cut too

its a case of two teams trading one man’s garbage for anothers. bengals lacked real depth at safety #4 because of 2 injuries in the pre-season and the jags needed a little depth at cb. jones wasn’t going to survive the cut in cincy either. with the trade he gets yet another chance to play in the nfl.

as the conditional pick, if the pick is anything above a 6th or 7 th round pick and requires nelson to be a starter or play in 8 games or be on the roster come week 16-18, he won’t be. this is mike brown. the same guy that is so frugal he’s a joke around the league. he’s been known to make deals/contracts with incentives that the team will never allow to be reached.

I could see this scenario, i think Nelson is good as a backup as you are saying he will be. I just replied because all you guys seemed so happy on your blog about Nelson that made me think he will be the starter, and a good one. I for one am not much interested in David Jones as much as the conditional pick…that considering how good Nelson is, we might never see.
Anyway, didn’t mean to take a shot at your team. Good luck on the season.

Remember

this is Nelson we’re talking about. A conditional pick may not amount to much if we have to rely on Nelson to earn it for us.

I wasn’t even thinking about it, you are right. Chances are big we will never see this pick.

even if it’s a bag of used hocky pucks – the fact that we get anything for Nelson is huge. Gene must have photos of bengals GM in compromising situation or something ;-)

So this trade might’ve as well be his weight in Gold

I wonder

if Gene is gonna make the one move that will put the asses in seats and improve the club simlutaneously. We’ve gotten younger (and cheaper) to where it may not be a bad play to make a move for a huge name player who can cut the field in half. I imagine Gene has more in the works than the Nelson trade.
