-Michael from Arhus, Denmark:
Your comments on the cuts and the trade, Surprised?
-George from Jacksonville:
So Courtney Greene made the team on one hit?
Vic: The only cut that surprised me was the Scott Starks cut. A couple of weeks ago, I had asked Jack Del Rio about the roster competition at cornerback and he said Starks had settled in as the team’s "nickel" back. I hadn’t seen anything that would change that thinking since then, so I just assumed Starks was the team’s "nickel" back and the competition was between Don Carey, William Middleton and Tyron Brackenridge. I think the trade with Cincinnati and the acquisition of David Jones was what resulted in Starks being cut. What the Jaguars have now is a young collection of cornerbacks. GM Gene went heavy at the position because he obviously likes the upside he sees in these players. It’s a premium position. You can never have enough of them. With every move, he’s positioning the team for the future. I think that’s obvious.
Vic: No, he made the team based on his full body of work. You know that. You’ve heard that said over and over. It’s more truthful to say you cut the team based on what you saw in the preseason games only. Ask yourself this: How many times did you see Greene miss a tackle or blow a coverage? I’m not gonna tell you that I saw him making a lot of plays, but I don’t remember him missing a lot of tackles and blowing a lot of coverages, either, and that has to count for something. The missed tackles and blown coverages had to stop. The memory of playing patty-cake with Justin Gage down the sideline and of what Dallas Clark did to the Jaguars last December would’ve been traumatic had the Jaguars stood pat at free safety. It had to end. I think we all knew that.
My view:
There have been several questions about the Jaguars' secondary asked lately. From, "Why Carey over Starks?", to "Who will be the starting safeties?'. Both are legitimate queries. None of the young men in question are proven. The only proof we have is that the guys who have been cut or moved had ample opportunity to prove themselves worthy of their roster spot. They proved disappointing. Now it's time for the young blood to prove it.
