My case for Champ.
As we all know Nnamdi Asomugha is now a free agent, and everybody is hoping their team picks him up, well now everybody is forgeting about Champ Bailey, arguably the third best CB in the league, becoming a free agent.
Champ is incredible, and though he may be slowing down due to his age(33 next season), he is still playing at an incredibly high level.

Looking at the chart above, Champ started his career off great, starting every game 6 seasons straight. 05 and 06 were his best years, but he continued to play at a high level, then in 08 he got hurt, partially tore his groin(ouch), but he came back in 09, and played another great year. This past year he played pretty well, he didn't have many picks, but he knocked down a good amount of passes, and shut down most receivers.
He made the Pro Bowl 9 times, in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009...
Bringing him in would be a great move by Gene, it would give us an instant and great cornerback, he may be aging, but unlike Mathis, he's still playing at a high level, and he's older than him. We can then trade Rashean for a third or fourth. Then in the draft we can draft somebody in the second round like Jimmy Smith, he can play nickel, and develop behind Champ Bailey. Derek Cox has been playing very well since being un-benched. And Mathis has been the one being picked on. Now with Bailey we can shut down Reggie Wayne, Kenny Britt, and Andre Johnson...Bailey has a very poor corner spelling him, which hurts him, if we bring him in, he's got Derek who can play very well on most NFL #2s, and then we have a pretty good secondary, just need a FS fix...eventually when Champ Bailey retires, we would have Jimmy Smith here, to step right in, and you have an instant replacement, who can play at the same level as Champ in his prime...in the end it's a win win for us.
Earlier in the season his agent and the Broncos' Front Office were negotiating a 4-year contract, before Denver pulled out of negotiations. So he's probably looking for a 3 or 4 year deal. His previous contract was: Seven Years; 63Million. If you do the math thats 9Million a year. Earlier this year Darrelle Revis received a contract extension for Four years; 46Million. That's 12Million a year. Champ Bailey isn't Darrelle Revis, he was a great corner, but never was the corner that Revis is today, so I think Bailey's contract if he signed with us would be about 20m/3 years or 27m/4 years, due to Bailey's play declining, still good play, but not as good...that sounds a fair deal to me...
Also he's from Georgia, nearby clearly, so he's pretty close to home. If that effects his decision or not...
Now think about this:
| Team's Weakness | Why? | FA Signed | Year | Current Status |
| Offensive Tackle | Young | Tra Thomas | 09 | Eugene is playing light's out, Eben is struggling at times. |
| Wide Receiver | Young | Torry Holt | 09 | MSW is playing better then previous years, and Mike Thomas is playing very well. |
| D-Line | Old, and Busts | Aaron Kampman | 10 | The line was playing great until Kampman got hurt, but they have been playing much better then last year, Alualu and Knighton are playing great, Mincey has broken out, and Lane and Hart are slowly coming along. Harveys is a bust |
| Secondary | Young, and playmakers are now playmakers for the other team, looking at you Mathis. | Champ Bailey? | 11? | ??????????????????????????????????????????? |
So as you can see the past 2 years, our biggest need got a aging free-agent signed to it, to not only play, but inspire and teach the younger players. Well this year our biggest weakness is the secondary, and we need a vet to come in, kick Mathis out, and inspire our young(that'll be drafted this year, and Derek Cox). Gene I know your reading this, please fly in and sign Champ. You almost signed Darren Sharper, now u got a vet with skill, and gas in the tank....SIGN HIM.

lmao that was hilarious, just laughed out loud..
but yea i can see wht ur saying, id rather just get set for the future, instead of doing this sort of stufffff ei) kampman another torn acl..i hope he doesnt get injured again next year
kampman tore his acl
the surgery makes ur knee stronger, he got the same surgery so his knees are both stronger then they were 2 years ago, so he wont ahve a problem with his knees again, and Champ has gotten hurt once badly 2 years ago(and it was a 7week injury), he’s not injury prone, he plays at a level just shy of nnamdi, and hes cheaper

"so he wont ahve a problem with his knees again"
Wow… There’s one hell of a positive thinking guarantee. Hope you’re right on that one. That’d be cool to have robo legs on a pro bowl caliber DE.
WTF IS THE INTERNET?!?
chuckle!
that just made me laugh! it is purported that with the new advances in repairing/rehabbing ACL injuries. That the knee ligament is stronger than before. i do believe though there is still issues within the repaired knee. It is suseptible to other injuries. im sure do to scar tissue build up, cartilage damage, and atrophy of other ligamants/tendons/muscles/bones/fluid. The repaired knee’s could still have injuries..i do like the though of ROBO-AK-74 NOW THOUGH! gonna have to come up with that Tshirt lol

I've heard this too
But different people react differently to the surgery in terms of recovery time. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kampmam came back ready to roll in training camp at 100% but he might not be ready. I’m not expecting perfection, but if he is then it’s an added bonus!

I'll take a XXL
I loved Kampman’s game this year before he got hurt. Can’t wait to see what he has next year with hopefully improved pieces around him.
As for the joke, I heard the reports and AK’s great explanation of the results of the last surgery of the new parts, I just see that as a tremendous assumption that he won’t have any problems going forward. Unless you make them robotic, they’re still human tissue and subject to injury. Impossible to bank on/know that. I hope he doesn’t, but can’t just throw that out there.
WTF IS THE INTERNET?!?
AND if you do make a robo AK T
Don’t forget that Iowa fashion mullet. On top of GAME, the man’s got style folks! : )
WTF IS THE INTERNET?!?
how would u make a robotic ak, the mechanics of a gun are simple, cock, hamemr goes back, pull trigger, hammer strikes bullet, bullets projectiles

I've always liked champ..
But I’d rather have a younger FA CB but we can’t seem to get one, sign him right away.
by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Jan 12, 2011 9:27 PM EST reply actions
i wouldnt mind a younger cb
but with champ, ye’s he old(for an NFL player), but he still plays great.
by rhettchrystal on Jan 12, 2011 9:41 PM EST up reply actions
you have no problem committing that much money to champ??!
I would be much happier taking a bit worse if the guy is younger and cheaper. Gene is not going out to spend that kind of money on a CB. I can tell you that. Also, there is some decent secondary players in the draft, to the point of me rather seeing a 3rd or 4th riund cb over spending that much on bailey.
don’t get me wrong, i would not mind bailey on a shorter term deal, or a cheaper deal, but i doubt that is happening.
very different situations.
WIth AK, it was a pass rusher that we needed, and premier pass rushers ain’t cheap. when it comes to defensive backs, esepcially if you have a solid pass rush up front, you do not need to go with super pricey guys. the jaguars are focusing on building up a defensive line, and spent big money in hopes of suring up their line. therefore, spending big $$ on bailey would not be worth it in my opinion. I would much rather see the money be applied to another position or on younger guys for that secondary.
i would probably only take him for like 2 years and 9-10 mill total AT THE MOST!!
by Jagsrok9008 on Jan 12, 2011 11:20 PM EST up reply actions
its kinda the exact same situatoin
we need a cover corner. and good cover corners arent cheap,
secondly usally it takes some time to develop as a corner in the NFL. Revis didnt come into the league and start as a shutdown corner.
Bailey and Kampman i feel are nearly identical situations
i disagree.
truth of the matter is going out ther and comitting decent amounts of money to aging players is not ideal. And I probably have better insight into that than most people on this site here. I am a NY Yankee fan and I have seen the horrors of throwing money at aging guys that are on the decline. Short term it is not an issue, but the truth is, when you are paying Champ Bailey 7 mill or more as he is 34 and starting to really show a decline in play, fans will be upset despite what he might have done in the earlier years of the deal.

How are Tre Thomas and Torry Holt doing now?
Oh yeah… Thomas is a backup and Holt is out of the league. Torry Holt was an acceptable signing because he was signed for one year in 09, when we needed a receiver like nobody’s business as a holdover. Champ Bailey is not willing to be a holdover guy, nor will he accept a 1 year deal when dumb/desperate teams are willing to pay out the wazoo for a name.
by Brian Levenson on Jan 13, 2011 12:30 AM EST reply actions
Sorry, Tra Thomas retired in August.
So they’re both out of the league.
by Brian Levenson on Jan 13, 2011 12:33 AM EST up reply actions
He's gonna be 33
If he’s not a holdover guy, we’ll have a big problem at the position in 2 years when he’s 35 and his play falls off a ton.
by Brian Levenson on Jan 13, 2011 2:43 PM EST up reply actions
no we wont
we give him a 2 or 3 year year deal, and draft some guys, and then when he’s ready to leave/retire, we have instant replacements…..like hart, if we put him behind a quality player, and let him learn the game, and practice practice and practice, he’ll end up being a great player in a few years, well we need that kind of player in the secondary to go behind Champ
by rhettchrystal on Jan 13, 2011 2:50 PM EST up reply actions
I think its a risk versus reward issue
Yes if we signed Bailey in 2 years his play will probably start to decline but if he can give us 2 quality years and he can act as veteran leader or teacher then it will be worth the money especially if its an incentive laced contract. Ive noticed that some of the veterans that Gene has been bringing in have had a great effect on the players around them. Kampman is an obvious example but look at Torry Holt. Mike Thomas said of playing with Holt his rookie season, “Torry is a great dude. Being able to watch him practice and see the way he goes about his job, it’s definitely a process we try and replicate.”. Now idk what Champ Baileys personality is like but if he can be a leader and help teach the younger guys then I think he worth every penny.

Pretty much I agree with rhettchrystal
If Bailey is going to come in and just do his own thing and just collect his paycheck its not worth it. It all comes down to the type of person he is and I honestly dont know anything about his personality

ya

I rather
see the Jaguars go after Brent Grimes, Johnathan Joseph, or Richard Marshall. Having a young stud corner who will be here for a while would help us out a lot more then a guy who will be retiring when Gene expects this team to be hitting it’s peak of the rebuilding process.
My thoughts exactly..
but if that cant happen, I want Bailey.. But whether or not they get anybody in FA, they are still gonna draft some young CBs, so even if he does retire at the peak we will have some talent to take over.
by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Jan 13, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions
No doubt
those would be good signings and I think a guy like Brent Grimes or john joseph would be a good sign too. But if those guys are resigned by their teams then it would be a good idea to get champ.
i would not be UNHAPPY if champ ended up here. IN fact i would be rather happy
I'd rather have a guy who can cover...
maybe make a tackle, take a good angle every once in awhile… you know… NOT suck most of the time. That’d be nice. I’d like a couple of those guys please.
WTF IS THE INTERNET?!?
Yeah I’d be happy too, but don’t you think if those guys resign with their teams, then there is more competition in the market for Champ? If it comes down to him being the only other good corner on the market besides Nnamdi then the losers of the Nnamdi race will turn towards Champ. And if Champ is given the same contract that the Jags offer by a contender, then I don’t see him coming here.
It's all what others are willing to spend
I don’t think we are going to break the bank for him, so if we do sign him then I’m confident that there were no better offers on the table.
I wouldn’t mind having him because I can’t see us offering him a crazy deal. If we do get him I think I will like the contract.

champ won’t be cheap + being 33 yrs.old (even though he’s better than a lot of cb’s, his stats ARE in decline)… so, i’m about 70-30 on this… 70 being a No
Sean
Pax Armis Acquiritur
his stats are on decline,
but hes still playing well, he was snubbed from getting on the afc all start team this year(pro bowl). Nnamdi Asumogh’s stats were in decline too he sucks
