Bengals Carson Palmer wants out, threatens retirement.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer wants out of Cincinnati, according to Chris Mortensen on ESPN. Palmer wants out by either being released or via a trade and has threatened to retire if he doesn't get released or dealt. Palmer used to be considered one of the young emerging QB's and many felt he was a Top 5 quarterback in the league. Palmer however has been struck with injuries since tearing his ACL against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs a few seasons ago. I have no idea what it would take to get Palmer in a trade, but the Jaguars do have an extra fourth round pick obtained from the Saints during last year's draft.
Until a new CBA is in place however, players cannot be traded. Hypothetically speaking, if one is in place come draft time, would you favor the Jaguars giving up a 3rd or 4th round pick for Carson Palmer?
Here's what Palmer has done since his injury in 2008. Obviously, the stats have not translated to wins for Palmer and the Bengals.

I like palmer but
He is done, after that playoff game it all went down hill. I would not mind for a late round pick because what is wrong with a little competition for Garrard? So I dont know we will see.
I would not do a 3rd or 4th because that is too high imo, he would be a stop gap and how much is he better than Garrard? I have seen some games where Palmer just played so bad, then some good games where he is toe to toe with the other team, up and down just like Garrard, so I would only do a late round pick, 6th-7th for him. I doubt Gene Smith would do it anyway however.
Are you kidding me?
I’ve been reading your stuff for awhile, and for the most part agree, but you really dropped the ball here. Have you even watched the Bengals the past few years? Palmer is done and to think he offers more than Garrard is a joke (and no, I don’t think Dave is a top-10 QB)
I'll take a 22 year old and bright eyed rookie, thanks
Palmer has been holding that team back for years now. I’d rather see him retire than play as a jag. I’ll take Dalton.
I voted yes
But just on the merit that they ‘try’ to trade for him. It saddens me that the big playoff injury just killed his career. I truly believe that he wouldve been mentioned with manning and brady had that not happened.
So you trade away a 3rd round pick one you could use to maybe draft Dalton or any other YOUNG QB who may fall, or to trade up to get a YOUNG QB? That makes no sense, Palmer is old, not getting any better he is what he is and he would be a stop gap player.
Sorry I would rather get a rookie in here and let Garrard be QB. “Picks not players” as an old wise man once said.
right on!
I saw “the look” last year when they played the Jets. It was the same look that Trent Edwards had on his face against Houston.
He wanted no part of a pass rush as if he felt there were 11 Kimo Von Olhaffens lined up against him. If he couldn’t make soup with TO, Ocho Cinco, and Gresham among others how is he going to do it here?
As far as doing little, they did win the North in 2009 right?
Bottom line: 1 year younger than what we currently have and a catastrophic knee injury and arm/elbow troubles on his resume. So that’d be a major facet that we would lose if we had a classic drop back passer the likes of Palmer.
Hell, I’d rather get the same thing 8 years younger and see if Gabbert falls to us.
but...
CIncinnati has never been known to have a savvy front office. I think he can be had. Hell, maybe Durant or Harvey and a 6th or 7th for Palmer.
A bolw of Skyline Chili sounds damn good right now, speaking of Cincy.
Definitely not a 3rd or 4th
but if he is released I would most certailnly be interested in bringing him in
Ok maybe dropped the ball is harsh, but I don’t think there’s much need for a poll every time a washed up player like him gets cut this offseason…especially considering Gene Smith is running the team (as most people have pointed out in this thread)
Reems chill out bro
This is a good topic to discuss during the off-season. Everyone has an opinion about older players and whether or not they should be added. Smith is going to have to add a few veteran players this off-season if the Jags want to compete for the playoffs next year. I’m not necessarily saying Palmer, but the pieces are needed.

Is Alfie putting up a poll
really something to make a big deal out of. I mean it is the offseason for us atleast, frankly I’ll take any football news I can get.
For some reason I think
that players can still be traded before the end of the current league year. They just won’t be able to make those trades ON Draft Day since that’ll be part of the next league year.
DG is the best we have and help is not on the way. I realize he's not perfect, but I feel a lot better about him at QB than I do the O-Line, DB's, or LB's ability to cover a TE.
Peyton Manning is an FA right now, correct?
Hell, offer him 5 million more than Indy, ownership stake upon retirement and free shoes for life.
Some of us are obsessed with a young QB
And it seems like they want one no matter who it is.
If our FO determines that all of the QBs we have a chance to draft aren’t very good then yes I want Carson Palmer (probably for a 5th though, 4th seems a little high) he will be a better backup and a better stop gap then a rookie either way.
If Dalton is determined to be legit I don’t see any need to get Carson, but really if we don’t like any of the young guys then I don’t want them.

I see your logic, but it's about time we draft one for development
Honestly I don’t see that Palmer is an upgrade over Garrard, but some might. What we might get in the passing game, we’ll lose in the running game, especially on 3rd or 4th and 1.
I agree
I want a young QB who we can and will develop, not a QB we grab just because he’s young and hope he develops. If we dont see a potential starter with this group I don’t want any of them.

I'd rather
Get more Derek Cox, Terrance Knighton and Mike Thomas quality players than Carson Palmer.
NOOOOOOOO !!!!!
i had Cedric benson in fantasy so i watched a decent amount of bengals games this season, he was absolutely terrible..he threw the must unadvised passes, he looked clueless out on the field, and was completely out to lunch. He is getting older, worse, out of his prime, and i don’t see him as a better qb than garrard, especially cause it would take time to learn out offense. And We should be looking for a young FRANCHISE QB, not a washed up old qb ! COMMON THINK ABOUT IT GUYS LOL
Palmer or Garrard...
doesn’t matter as long as we have our defense.
on a side note, i live near cincy and well the reception to this news is kind of welcoming. Bengals fans are not fond of Palmer anymore, and want a go at a younger QB. I mean picking up Palmer for cheap would never hurt the Jags chances but i don’t see a 3rd or 4th round worth it.
Jennings at the 30, at the 20, at the 10. TOUCHDOWN RASHAD JENNINGS!!
I know some of you are in love with Garrard
but Palmer is a better QB than him even in a down year.. Now I don’t think the Jags should trade for him, Gene is still building this team and I think he can find a good QB with their draft picks. But if he is released then exploring his price would make sense, but if its to high then forget it.

I don't see it
I agree with kicking the tires, but Palmer and Garrard are effectively the same guy except one can run.
Trading a 3rd or even a 4th for Carson Palmer would be nothing short of idiotic
Trading a 5th would be pretty stupid, even. His arm strength is gone. He’s a glorified Chad Pennington at this point, but if Chad Pennington made a ton of money. No thank you.

too old,
too soft,
too expensive
too tainted by Bungalitis
His stats are inflated by having decent deep threat recievers too and his intereceptions/TD rating is too high.
but how his declaration affects the draft board above us is the big question. I can see Arizona biting or Tennessee meaning they can spend a 1st rounder on a different position
What could of happened; did.
No Palmer, start fresh

Start fresh...with the same coach, same starting QB, same OC, same DC....
Oh wait…I get it…start fresh with a new QB coach (in title at least)…carry on.

Fresh better, Palmer worth considering
First of all, to answer all of the speculative comments on Palmer. He only made 1 million more dollars than Garrard this season so he is not paid that much more. Palmer completed 126 more passes than Garrard. Palmer threw for 1236 more yards than Garrard. He actually had almost the same stats as his 07-08 year which most of the posts say was his best. That was the year he was injured in the playoffs I think. Nevertheless, he performed at the level he played at three years ago this year. So to say he’s washed up and had not arm is ridiculous. TO and OCHO are a cancer on that team. They are more concerned with their TV show. Palmer is not the reason that team underachieves.
With all that said younger is better for our situation if we can get the right guy. If we cannot get one of the top guys Palmer is a valid option because it would at least raise the competition level. Plus Cinci could easily replace him because they draft at number 4. There will be a line of teams interested in Palmer if he gets moved. The QB draft is not that good in 2012 unless you get Luck.
