New OT rule says, "We favor offense."

Why is there a new rule for overtime in the post-season?

I think it's because the NFL has tilted the field so much in recent years in favor of the offense, that they had to give some kind of hope to the team that doesn't get the kickoff... "If we can hold them to only a field goal, we might have a chance."

I found a neat site http://thelongestlistofthelongeststuffatthelongestdomainnameatlonglast.com/trivia197.html that provides the information below.

I looked only at games decided by a field goal on what appeared to be the first overtime possession. (I got tired and didn't research the '87 game between the Broncos and Browns.) Guess what. I think it's happened only once, when the greatest QB ever in the history of the the whole entire infinite universe didn't get a chance to throw another of his all-time record interceptions to lose yet another playoff game.

So, like the Shaq "foul away from the ball in the last two minutes of the game" rule, the NFL changed the game.

If you're a football fan it doesn't get much better than the playoffs, OK, maybe it does, overtime in the playoffs.

Since the playoff format was introduced into the National Football League in 1933 there have been many playoff games that have gone into overtime.

We also had to go into the overtime to try and find a list and had to go into double overtime to compose our own, so here is the official list of all the NFL playoff games that went into overtime.

Since the first Super Bowl in 1967 till now, not a single Super Bowl Game has gone into overtime.

And finally, the reason we have this new rule, Favre loses another playoff game.

NFC Championship: New Orleans Saints 31, Minnesota Vikings 28 (OT)

The Saints won the coin toss in overtime and never gave up the ball. Pierre Thomas returned Longwell's kickoff 40 yards to the New Orleans 39, and the team gained 39 additional yards on ten plays... umm, ten plays.39 yards on ten plays. Nice defense.

Then again, defenses don't really have much of chance nowadays.
