Rumor: Jaguars to work out punters Nick Harris & Matt Dodge
The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to work out punters today, as they told us they would during Jack Del Rio's Monday afternoon press conference. According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post via Twitter, we now know who the punters are they may be working out.
Among the top free agent punters rumored to be on Jaguars' radar: Nick Harris and Matt Dodge.
Nick Harris was cut in the Detroit Lions cut down to get to 53 players. He spent eight seasons punting for the Lions averaging 43.2 yards per punt. He also spent the first two years of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. Matt Dodge on the other hand, was drafted by the New York Giants in the 7th round out of East Carolina. Dodge punted for the Giants all last season, but lost his job to Steve Weatherford in the preseason. Last year Dodge averaged 44.8 yards per punt with a 34.3 net average.

Just throwing it out there: I hope it’s not Dodge. A 34 yd net would be the same as Turk… Fifth worst in the nfl in net punting…he also put 27% of his punts inside the 20. Turks at 25% now. I’m not so sure this is much of an improvement…..dodge was 4th worst punter in the league by net yd standards yet 9th best in avg punts…to me that says inconsistency, line drive punts, and outkicking your coverage. Are we really sure it’s not just change for appeasement sake? P.S.- I like weatherford. 50% of your punts inside the 20 with only FOUR touchbacks= consistency and direction control. Especially seeing as he did that while kicking the eighth most punts in the league #PunterMancrushLol

Dodge was a rookie
playing under Coughlin.
I'd rather be golfing.

after Dodge's blunder against the Eagles last year, I really hope it is not him
IDk much about Harris, but I figure he is the better punter
Sam Swank used to boom long punts consistenly at Wake
I think he might have an ACC record for longest punt.
Hard to imagine it being any worse
I think Turk is gone no matter what and we just take a chance at someone else. He’s gone it may not improve that part of the game but at least the fans will be happy.
Dodge
So i work for the Giants and did so last year. Matt Dodge would actually be a great signing… yes, he really struggled last season (we know what happened vs Philly) but he was really good in Training Camp and the pre-season. He’s got a hell of a leg.
All the Cons on Dodge were either mental things or consistancy issues, but you have to factor in that he was a rookie starting for the NY Giants. Frankly in the broadcast department we were all very surprised that the Giants decided to go with Weatherford, the word is they chose him because he was “safer”.
However I think the Jags are the perfect low profile spot for Dodge. He should kill it in his tryout cause he’s got an absurdly powerful leg and I really think the Jags will sign him.
I've been dropping Matt Dodge hints for a few weeks now.
That’s really good to hear.
I'd rather be golfing.
Then Turk will have to get the hell out of dodge....
Sorry, had to.

BAP
Of course, keep two punters if they’re among the top 53. BAP = Best available player. Or is it best available punter? not sure.
Dodge.
And not just becasue I’m an East Carolina fan.
Can’t think of a reason why they cut him other than that one derp he made by punting to Deseasn Jackson.
Oh look my tumblr, where you can find all my photoshops and other crap

Really? You can't think of one other reason?

And not to be vengeful.......
but I would love it if we all got to taunt Turk as he left the locker room with his things. I can live with the guy having lost his edge. He would still need to be replaced, but this man is obviously an ass! We do need to make sure we are getting an improvement, and not jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire!
highlight of the season so far. Who will be the next punter!!!
Only way it could get more exciting is if our holder botches some long snaps and we get a street free agent to come in and hold for PATs and FGs.
Forget a new punter!
Cut TURK and go trade for a WIDE RECEIVER! Then just go for it on every fourth down!
haha!

that would really rock the boat
but I remember seeing a high school coach who had the formula down to “prove” that this was the best strategy. Considering the net gain on field position from punting vs the percentage of successful fourth down conversions, as well as the benefit of being able to gameplan for four offensive plays per first down, he decided punting was never a good idea as a rule. (Granted in high school punt yardage is significantly lower…)
At the same time, opening up a roster spot could make it all worthwhile. And in a very very dire circumstance, I’m sure you could find someone else on the roster (scobee?) to make a halfway decent punt when necessary. We sure haven’t been able to count on that with Turk.
Sounds like...
our coaching staff puts a much bigger emphasis on directional punting than a strong leg. That’s been one of Turk’s complaints. Do either of these guys have a background in directional punting?
Jags ticket holder since 1995.
Anyone >>> Turk right now.
