Jags at Steelers: What I Saw

This is a segment I usually pull out on another blog but since that team isn't playing, I figured why not.

I will go ahead and say this.  This team is not as bad as that 1-5 record it has.  I will give my thoughts after the jump.

Star-divide

  • Offensive Play Calling- In the first half it was sickening.  Three passes in a row is nuts.  In the second half it improved.  This offense is like an old car.  Sometimes it works, other times it just wants to conk out.  Whosoever in charge of the play calling needs to get his head out of his a$$.
  • Blaine Gabbert- This was my first game seeing Sunshine play.  He has a lot more growing pains to go through BUT I like what I see so far.  Unlike Andy Dalton or Cam Newton, Gabbert hasn't had a ton of 1st team snaps in practice until now.  He is facing some good defenses now and so he should only get better.  He needed to wait 2 more seconds on that Hail Mary.
  • Inconsistency- This is the biggest issue on this team right now.  One second they are hot and then they are ice cold.  It showed today.  I do not know what is going on with Marcedes Lewis but I don't like it.  Blaine can get him the ball anywhere on the field so that isn't the issue.  The Offensive Line has to be the most inconsistent squad on this team.  One second the backs are getting 1 yard and the next they are getting 20.  Blaine should not be hit 20 times a game.
  • Defense- Compared to what I saw last year, this is a 180.  Not much to say except the turnovers need to go up.

Well that is what I saw.  Sorry it isn't much but I haven't seen enough to really give an in depth approach.

I did not see the game but based on the numbers

I saw a punter who can get off decent punts unlike that old fart who was released last week

I agree

But I don’t think its just Lewis who is having that issue. It seems like all of the receivers refuse to accept that he can throw it anywhere, they aren’t going to out run his arm they have to stick with their routes. The growing pains of a young team, I can deal with but things like not completing a route drive me crazy.

O-line has to play together, line play is more about playing as one than anything else, I think all the shuffling is hurting. Just leave the guys out until they are 100% and ready to go. When they go back in and re-aggravate an injury it doesn’t help anything.

They are

used to short arm Garrard not being able to throw it more than 15 yards without strain.

Yea I think they are

but they need to get with the program, the new guy can get it to them.. That one small adjustment and I think we see a very different offense. I know it costed them one first down with Thomas and it looked like Dillard stopped running on that long pass early in the game, that one would have been a TD.

Run defense was a disappointment

Where is Pot Roast? He is definitely not the player he was last year.

I'm watching the Ravens/texans game right now...

They are getting ray rice the ball like every other play.. He is killing the texans.

Runs, Swing passes, Passesin the flat..

Why the hell arn’t we using MoJo the same way?

JUST WIN BABY!!!!!!!!

well the Ravens have weapons other than Rice

So he usually has more room for those plays to be successful.

I did notice Blaine getting a little antsy too early after the ball was snapped and he really didn’t have anyone coming straight at him. I don’t know if he’s going to be a pocket passer or a mobile one. Gotta give it more time, eh?
